Which year GTX are you looking for?
Just looking for a BF, plan is to do a swap on the Capri that's why I'm looking for a thrashed one I don't wanna  ruin a good car. I just want to get the AWD Bits in tact/rust free. I could care less about the shell. I'm also not looking soon, I plan to do it sometime later this year moneys tight currently.

Check with Jim Chittenden in Saugerties NY. He has a GTX that he is parting..your side of the country. You can find him on the Yahoo GTX group  s1elise190 is his screen name.

Also..most guys that are parting GTX's are doing so because they are rusted out.

Ive seen that the shells rust out really bad, does the rust end up affecting the subframe/AWD components, or is that rare? Also thanks for all the support everyone, you guys are amazing! I'm currently having problems with Flickr.

Alright I just picked up my new clutch from the parts strore and called my mechanic for a qoute to replace it, ive been qouted 280, so I have to say thats a great deal. id replace the clutch myself but i currently dont have the tools(missing breaker bar, full socket set, and a good set of jack stands)  :-\

in other news my pc just shit out, so no pictures untill my car is fixed, maybe next week Waiting for Russ to get back to me.

Just got my computer back, sadly I wasnt able to recover my files. I now will have to dig through my phones to get any pictures of the work I did. In other news in 2 weeks ill have my car back, and I will take pictures then.
Quick question how do you clean a engine bay? My engine bay looks terrible atm.

Removed Convertible Top and the rear seat today. Took me 3 hours, it was a real doozy. The hardest part was getting my hardtop off, I had to fight with my rear middle top bolt.

Also im sick of waiting on my mechanic, can one of you give me a walkthrough on how to replace the clutch on my n/a. Give me a full idea of all the tools, and the steps needed. I have an idea on how to do it, but I want to make sure im right.

Update: I was able to complete the clutch change using my Workshop Manual!

Firstly... wow, thanks for the complimentary remark.

And if you want my 2 cents... Just go with whatever you feel is appropriate as  your build develops. It would be interesting as a reader to map your progress as you are experiencing it, including your thoughts on the build, aspirations aswell as Journaling the actual work done and pics of progress... in other words, keep up the good work  :)

Your planned build is awesome  8),  you've put a lot of really cool and stylish ideas into your plans and I'm looking forward to monitoring your progress.

Regards,

Thanks that really helped my spirits! I do have to say you're build thread is so inspiring to me. It also sets a really high mark that I hope to follow!

This build is gonna take quite awhile, if I complete it in the next two years ill be amazed. My main problem is finding the time, and lack of a second car currently. Once I get something that is suitable as a daily I plan on starting the AWD swap, but that doesnt mean I wont still be doing updates on here... I still have other things planned that should be coming soon!

I'm curious about the 16x8 rims, check out the tyre size for a link to an online wheel / tyre fitment calculator...

235 45 16 (http://www.willtheyfit.com/index.php?width=195&aspect=50&diameter=15&wheelwidth=6.5&offset=40&width2=235&aspect2=45&wheel_size=16&wheel_width=8&offset2=20#isPage=1) +20 offset, sticks out about 3.9 cm or 1.53 inches from outer rim for stock tyres, with inside rim fit.

You'd need flares for that... awesome !

Yup thats exactly why I chose the size of 16x8, I believe the Capri really could use fender flares plus it goes along with the Factory RS model i'm envisioning.
Also if helps with grip, so it lessens the amount of strain ill put the gearbox through.

Im pretty sure the sustained high rpm/ torque of drifting would explode the GTX transmission its that weak, but I do think it would be awesome till that happened   ;)

Those tires/offsets are going to leave you with a undesirable  positive scrub radius.

Uhuh... I figured some custom widening (cutting) of the wheel arch under the flares would probably be required.

That's one of those do or die mods... kudos to washiestsnake for going all in to get a custom look.

Edit: I'm thinking the front wheel arch is the problem when turning... maybe go for 16x7's for the front and 16x8's for the rear

Well it looks like I might not be getting the GTX afterall, I currently live with my parents and they're in a tight spot right now finacially. They've asked me to help out. My money for the GTX is now going to them unless the owner is understanding enough to wait a month so I can recoupe from this.  :'(

If I cant get this car Ill be forced to buy from other GTX owners meaning it will put the AWD swap out that much longer. I really hope it wouldnt come to this...

Good to see you laugh.

Money comes and goes, family is more important... there are plenty of rusty old GTX's out there. Perhaps you haven't found the right one yet...

Edit: I saw a FWD GTX turbo for sale over here... I thought they were all AWD

The GT are FWD turbo sedan... the GTX are AWD turbo hatch. If it's not one of the two, it's mislabeled, or a conversion. I don't think it's any different in AU

The guy who sold me the B6T donor car has been waiting since July, with just a $100 deposit... I did however sweeten the deal offerring him the install job as he is a turbo mechanic...

Btw: nice rims... I use a streamlined version of photoshop on my Samsung Galaxy tablet... what do you need to color match?

Alright small update im getting new headlights for the RS. Im getting projectors since this is a slight restomod. I dont plan on going overboard with the modern
 updates though.
The plan is to make everything look factory so im going back to the stock radio, and getting a Ford SVO steering wheel. The GTX is coming with its stock steering wheel so I might use that. Id like opinions on which steering wheel is better. Also while its still kinda warm I have to repaint the trim around the car. The plan is to eventualy take  off the body trim once i get the Clubsprint bumpers. I then plan on filling the space left from the sidetrim with fiberglass so I can have more room for my widebody kit.

Also huge props to Russ for keeping the GTX so long for me. I couldn't do any of this without him!

Update I bought the 1994 Premium Stereo System from Ron, Ill be installing that this weekend. Hopefully the previous owner used a stock radio to new headunit adapter I really dont want to cut and re-splice everything back to the factory connector.
Once I have time this weekend, ill take pictures inside and out of my car for you guys to see!

-Update On the GTX Russ is busy this weekend, and will be busy moving so I wont be able to get it till around March at the latest. I actually am happy about this as it keeps me out of the cold while I rip the parts out.

Update- Just got back from a junkyard it took me 3 hours but all I could find was Kia Sephias with the BP that had 250-300k miles. All the Escort GTs had there heads and intakes taken allready leaving a unusable motor.  :-\
I really hope I can find one around my location.
-Change of plans Im going to upgrade my b6 to Megasquirt 2 then use the wiring harness on the BP once I get it. This helps me skip having to get a XR-2 wire harness and having to deal with compatibility issues.

Just had some nasty thoughts of using a FE3 motor. Considering the BF chassis got the FE3 it should be a pretty straight forward swap, and considering its larger displacement then the BP it could potentially be a much better motor then the stroker. The best part is theres one in my junkyard I saw without knowing. What are you guys' opinion?

I had looked at that engine also, but wondered about how well it would fit because it was installed in the later model 323.

What i had seen in my quikj research was that the FE3 was installed in South African 1986-1989 model 323s. I wish I could find more on how they got it to fit.

In other news ive been working polishing and detailing my car and so far its turning out great.  I still need to repaint the trim and wetsand the front end but once thats done my car will look amazing.

Also im going on a 8hr car cruise so if i disappear permanently there was a car race and my driver lost control. I have no plans of getting into a car race just wanted to give everyone a heads up.

Pretty sure the FE3 uses a different bolt pattern, I think there is a gtype that came mated to the F2 engines in the 626/probe that will work with it, possibly need to do a differential swap to get the right axles to work.

Will not mate to the GTX awd transmission

Im guessing id have to get a bellhousing adapter right?

Pretty much.
You'd be better off with a different (stronger) transmission then

FE3 is taller/longer than BP AFAIK and may pose some fitment challenges

Currently buying some suspension bits to stiffen up the car, while i'm at it I have to get a new alternator. Once I have them installed and tested ill release a overview and installation guide!  8)
Does anyone know if we(US) got any AWD 626s, and if so what transmission is it?
Update: Only had enough money to buy a Front Strut Bar, and Front Lower Arm Bar. Once I get payed again ill be buying a 19mm Sway Bar, and Rear Lateral Bar. Im  also in need of a XR-2 front sway bar, being as my car is only a N/A.

The AWD 626 was never sold in North America, only in Europe, While Japan and I think New Zealand got it under the Capella name.

The tranny is a G-series and is very similar to the BG GTX. The 626 tranny basically differs by having a bolt pattern for the F-series engines and a shorter 1st, 5th, and final drive ratio.

Just got my strutbar installed!  Handling in the Capri is now a dream torque steer is gone, along with the nasty body roll I was having.  Rocketmans construction is great and the hardware included was high quality!  I can allready tell the RS is going to be a great track car once I get the rest of the bracing!

Updated with before and after transformation. These pictures are from when I first got the car, and were taken on a really old phone so forgive the quality. Its easy to say my Capri was in awful shape before I got ahold of it.

Like I said, nice work.  Love the wheels.  Got a suggestion for you.  Paint the red strip in the side trim yellow, yellow calipers and kangaroo shields on the front fenders.  And I don't like yellow.  Came up with that for my red car, but now I've got a white car so the red works.

Nice work. Dig the wheels.

Went thru the same thing with the header panel several times. Sucks it doesn't unbolt.

Thanks Jack and Matt for the compliments.
The wheels are Konig Incidents in 15x6 not sure on offset. Ill be selling them for cheap whenever I get my new wheels.

Yea the header is a huge pain. The worst part is that on the coldest day of last year a small amount of bondo cracked so I may have to go back and do it again.  :'(

Update on the project: My lower arm bar came today. I tried to put it on but It turns our im missing the socket that is used to get the lower splash guard off. The worst part about it was that I allready had jacked the car up when I figured it out. Also can one of you guys give me tips on how to get the alternator out. I cant seem to beable to reach the socket in the back

Update: Lower Arm Bar Installed + New Alternator
I was looking at the alternator all wrong when I started it the first time. It ended up only taking me a hour to install the new one. The arm bar took a few hours but that was only because it was just me doing it. It stiffened up steering, also it stopped the car from wandering on the road..

When you get ready to fix your header, if you want to come up here, I can pull it out for you so the filler won't be so thick.  Also, If I can afford them, I'll take your wheels.

When I did mine I tack welded some roofing nails to the panel and pulled it out as best I could. There's still a lot of filler there though. Haven't yet had an issue with it.

I probably wont be redoing the header panel. I plan on getting it professionally painted.

While I was under my car I realized my front sway bar needs new bushings, and sway bar links. I also need to replace the upper strut tower rubber. Once it gets warmer I plan on getting that done. Does anyone have any recommended brands for these items?

Just bought everything to convert my Capri to the 94 tails. I also bought the 94 sun-visors.  I'm getting pretty close to how I want the interior to look like. Hopefully next month Ill have the new front seats put in.

Once I get payed again ill be converting to projector headlights with HIDs. If I can find a Halo projector that will fit, I plan on doing demon eyes.

Yes, if you have the "small" brake rotors, the knuckle casting is different (we've just confirmed this in the last year) and will not place the caliper at the proper distance from the hub. If I remember right, there is no pattern as to which n/a's got the "large" brakes and which ones did not. Measure before diving in

Will you be grinding your hubs or machining them? New bearings & seals while you're in there?
Title: Re: Capri RS Build(WashiestSnakes Build)
Post by: WashiestSnake on February 04, 2017, 04:36:28 PM
I figured something like that.
How do I tell the smaller brakes from the bigger is it simply a larger rotor?

I'll be grinding the hub down I don't have the money to go get them machined. As I recall it's just grinding abit of the ears around the lug stud goes right?

Yup I'll be changing all the seals and putting a new set of bearings in, I'd rather do it now then later.

Measure your rotors? Its either 9 3/8" or 10 1/4"

I've machined several sets of hubs for the Galant upgrade. Don't think I'd trust grinding.
Should be easy to find someone with a lathe - ask around? A six pack or a pizza will get a surprising amount of work done

Thanks Matt that's all I needed.
Ill measure my rotors after  Superbowl. If I have the small brakes I can go down to the junkyard and pick up the knuckles from a XR-2. While I'm there I'll pick up a extra set of hubs.

Ones a 93 Green XR-2, the others a 91 base model.

Jack is there anything you're looking for that I could pick up while I'm there?

I'd love the company if you'd like to come, I honestly could use your help with pulling the knuckles.

Matt would you be willing to machine my hubs?

The good news is this should be a one time event but I will be taking precautions for the future.

Thanks everyone for the support, and help. I couldnt do any of this without all you guys on here.

News: I need a Escort GT transmission does anyone have it, I want to turbocharge my N/A and not explode the transmission. Also I should be picking up a BP next month, so my next couple updates are going to be engine build related.
Title: Re: Capri RS Build(WashiestSnakes Build)
Post by: Rocketman on March 02, 2017, 12:40:20 AM
Is this your daily driver? If the transmission is that hard to find, just run the F series til it explodes. Hah.

You're going to want to swap the BP and G series at the same time. No use in fabricobbling drivetrain mounts, only to have to re-do them when you stuff the BP in there.

May be worth picking up a whole EGT/protege as a donor.
Title: Re: Capri RS Build(WashiestSnakes Build)
Post by: WashiestSnake on March 02, 2017, 01:14:02 AM
Yep the cars my daily currently.

Its not the fact that finding a G series is hard more so, all the ones within 200miles have insane milage on them. The average milage is around 140k, and that just doesnt seem reliable to shove up against a BP with boost.
The worst part is that EGTs are practically non existant here, it seems as tho most have been scrapped. ive found a few Proteges with the BP but theyre all Autos. :-\

I actually consider having the seizure a good thinf, ive gotten the most work done on my car then I have in weeks combined. Its much easier to do radical stuff when I dont have to work about driving it. That being said I really am gonna hate having to wait 3 months to drive again.

Currently I have my XR2 spoiler, and 94 Mirrors in the paint shop to be painted gloss black. Alright here's a little update, and I'm sorry for my lack of pictures and stuff I've been incredibly busy these last couple weeks. Anyway onto the good/bad stuff my Capri sprung a huge leak in the heater hose and I've had trouble replacing it, I just finally got it replaced. As of next week I'm going to be on Vacation so I plan on banging some stuff out. I'm planning on getting my interior cleaned up then and shooting pictures, aswell as cleaning up the engine bay. Another cool thing I have to share is I'm getting extremely close to the amount needed to turbo the engine, and do it right so that should be coming soon. I've started looking onto running BG suspension in hopes of using the e153 awd trans. I'll post more layer hope everyone is doing well.

Here's a couple questions regarding the GTX for Clay. 1 does it share it's own unique K-Frame or is it different. If it does and I can acquire it will it bolt into the fwd chassis or is that different aswell.

Cool, all that custom stuff is going to be expensive.  Lots of work has to go into R&D and also the manufacturing.  There's no economy of scale because so few people are interested and the guy's gotta make a living.  I hope it all works for you.  You know he has to have something going when his Festiva does 150 in a quarter.

Go gentle on the dome light cover, I think it has tangs to hold it on, then it's all screws IIRC. I got my fabric at JoAnn Fabrics, they stock grey and black with the foam backing. YouTube "headliner replacement" and you will find some great walk-throughs. Once you remove the screws and pull the push pins (use an automotive interior pry tool) and free up the fiberboard, you will have to use a very stiff brush to scrub off the remnants of the foam. Once you have all the foam off and the surface cleaned and vacuumed, you can cut the new material to fit, but leave about 4" on all sides if possible for positioning. You will be trimming it after it is glued. Measure where the dome light goes and cut a small undersized X there so the wire can come through.

Before you glue, fill in all the gouges with something smooth that will not shrink, like spakling putty (I used fiberglass since my fiberboard was creased a few spots). You might prime the spots if you use something like that, I would think that Kilz would suffice if it absorbs in and gets some bite.

IIRC, glue is applied to the foam backing, half at a time. Maybe you put some on the fiberboard too, look it up, I forget. You fold the fabric in half and start at the dome light, putting it down and gently rubbing it, working toward getting adhesion all the way across from window to window and then lightly burnish it all the way across like a print head toward the windshield, careful not to have any wrinkles. You can't reposition if you have the right glue. Once you wrap the edges and make some cuts at the corners to properly edge wrap like a gift wrapped present, take the other half that is not glued yet and, with some plastic proteciting the finished half, lay the last half over the finished work so that with plastic protecting the edges, spray the glue on the last half and like a print head again, burnish the fabric to the fiberboard side to side, pass by pass until you reach the back window area, letting your excess wrap, cutting and folding the corners like the front.

Trim it up, use pins to poke through from the backside and mark the push pin holes and then poke them through and put it back together being very careful not to push ANYWHERE very hard, it is very easy to mash a handprint into the foam.

I used a spray adhesive, 3m 38808 or maybe it was 77?. Again, google it or YouTube it and you fill find interior experts who know what to do.

Good explanation.  Trim adhesive is a contact cement so you do have to spray both pieces and wait until it tacks, get dry to the touch.  I have to do mine soon because weather is coming.

Alright the cars getting serviced right now. I'm doing a service front to back, planning on replacing the radiator fluid, brake fluid, clutch fluid (has been acting up and currently for whatever reason the clutch pedal isn't responding), possibly change Clutch Slave cylinder. While I'm at it I'm going to change the rear brakes, and pads. The car has sat the last  9months while I wasn't allowed to drive. Is there anything else you could think of to replace or give a check. Tires are a must, as these are about a year out of date.

What's left on the car astetically:
Replace Headliner and Recolor Interior Hardtop plastic
Replace Carpet
New Seats
Get Right 94 Sun Visor
94 Dashboard
Fix 94 Rear speaker panel (I'll post pictures I need help with that)
Install XR-2 Gauge Cluster
Install 94  Center Console
Find/install New Front Bumper
Get Car Ready For Paint/Remove Vinyl
New Wheels/Tires
Measure Body For Fender Flares
Install Big Brakes, and Paint Calipers Front/Back Red

Once the car is operable and legal, should be sometime before mid next month, I'm gonna pick up a Escort transmission. Current plan is to get the BP engine rebuilt, then install it along with the EVO 8 ecu. I'm pretty sure I'm going to install the transmission to the B6 as my f-series is showing it's age, and it took alot of abuse when I first was learning stick.

Don't forget the oil and transmission fluid.  I've got front and rear bumpers that you can have for what I've got in them.

Car service has been complete. My suspicion of the slave being out was correct, I installed a new one and bled it, kinda a pain. Rear brakes are fine, fronts need to be done but I'm going to wait as I'll be assembling the big brake kit. Anyone know the correct Stainless Steel brake hose to order?

My center console arrived and I'll be installing it soon after I order my carpet kit. It's in great condition and it's going to really shine in the interior. Anybody know of a good photo sharing website neither Photobucket or Flikr seem to work for me on here anymore.

Jack I'm definetly intrested in the front bumper, my rear is fine though.

Way to go on the console, they help bring the interior into the modern era, at least the beginning of it.  :D
After Photobucket yanked the rug out from under us freeloaders and we lost all our hosted images, I found these guys who are free, don't even require a login and don't mind if you are posting to a forum...

Very happy with the free hosting.

Imgur.com has been pretty good, but with the Photobucket Debacle (ive hosted images there for over 10 years) who knows what will happen with other sites now

Just wanted to let you guys know what's the deal with the GTX. I bought it from Russ, with the intention of him coming, and bringing it down here. Basically we negotiated to have him ship the car here. His truck broke down, and he hasn't been able to get one to use to tow it. I'm currently working 2 jobs trying to get my car complete so it's impossible for me to do the 1200 mile trip to pick it up. So right now I'm at a standstill, when it comes to that. I don't fault Russ with this he's been incredibly helpful through the ordeal, and has offered to give me my money back sense he couldn't complete the his part. I'm honestly more intrested in the parts then the cash. I'm honestly thinking about going through the used 323 GTX parts market to get the car done.

That all being said I'm just going to keep the Capri fwd for the time being. The current plan is to rebuild my BP engine, and get it installed with a EGT transmission so I won't have to mess with pedals, and stuff. I want to overhaul the suspension as it feels really stiff, and not in the good way. Interior is coming together slowly and I'm really happy about it. Hopefully soon I'll have it repeated working with my friend to price that out for the car.

I could probably go get it for you for expenses if you want to do it that way.  See what you can work out with Russ, he should give you what his expected expenses back.

I'll let you know Jack I have a few expenses coming up with the build these next weeks. I wouldn't be able to do it till January at the earliest.

Interior is now complete and just needs installation, all here minus seats. Current plan is to get a set of Mustang Cobra seats from a 03 Terminator, and get them redone a classic style. The plan is to get a interior shop to install the dashboard, seats, and carpet in the coming weeks. Once all that is done, I'll be moving onto paint work, and Engine building. Current estimate on the car being finished, to a point I enjoy will be around April at the latest. Good news is my second job is at a Mechanics Shop, so I've been learning alot, and hopefully I can start getting the suspension, and other things squared away finally. On a sad turn of events, it seems ad though I won't be able to use the GT transmission as I thought as from what I've discovered that Capri in itself is Cable operated, kinda confusing sense it uses a hydraulic slave cylinder. Anyone care to explain that? Does this mean I'll be forced to use the XR-2 transmission?

The XR2 uses a cable.

The EGT transmission is hydraulic actuated, just like the N/A capri. If you started with an N/A capri you should be good to use the EGT slave on the EGT trans.

Even still there are ways to convert from one to the other, it's a common thing.
My GTX transmission was hydraulic, I welded an extension to the fork and re-clocked it to use with a cable. (this was actually far simpler for me than swapping pedal assemblies, but I was prepared to do that)
The Festiva guys use a simple bracket with a linkage to actuate EGT hydro trans from their cable setups

As always thanks Matt you're a huge help. What threw me through a loop was that I was doing research and articles kept on saying the N/a trans was cable, and I knew that wasn't the case with my car, but I don't know enough about the differences between the two to know if it was simply a case where the clutch itself was hydraulic but there was a cable somewhere within. You guys really help out alot, and I really appreciate it.

Here's something interesting I found out. One of my co-workers has several RX-7s of the late 80s variety, and the wheel base and width of the car is nearly the same maybe it's a few milimeters larger. This made me thing of buying a rearsubframe from one of his parts cars for my Capri. This would give better braking options, aswell as better bearings. This however would require different trail links, I believe as I don't see the suspension working, but it's something I'm going to be looking into for the future. Another nice part of it would be it allows me to convert the rear to 5lug, the fronts would need the BG GTR knuckles to used 5lug for the front but the idea is exciting.

Anyone have any tips for installing carpet in the Car? I have a new set of molded carpet. What are you're guys opinions on flocking the door panels, aswell as the dash. Flocking is incredible cheap and from what I've gathered will stop reflecting sunlight off the dash something, I've noticed the Capri does alot in my case. Also I've been away I got the oil pressure sender fixed, aswell as repairing my passenger window regulator for the second time. I installed new plugs and wires and I noticed the car runs incredibly better but it seems as though the ignition module in my dizzy is going out so I'll most likely change that once I get the time. As for the brakes I have ceramic pads and a good set of discs, the only thing I'm waiting for to finish my brake upgrade will be Escort brake lines and the Mitsubishi rotors, the ones I ordered were incorrect. If anyone has the right part number for the rotors that would help immensely.

I did thanks SHOwn, working 13hours a day has taken a toll on me. Got them ordered. The only nice thing is I get to work on my car when it's slow at my shop.

I have unfortunate news. My car blew it's head gasket there were signs earlier that it was going south but I didn't pay attention to it. When I changed my spark plugs I saw that the threads were rusted due to condensation in the cylinder. I ended up changing the valve cover gasket as I saw it was leaking and might of been the culprit. I believe my thermostat must have broken or something as when the car overheated it was almost immediately. I ended up pulling off the highway the second I saw it, but it was too late the head gasket was toast. I'll end up redoing it, with a Comedic Gasket and ARP Studs. After that I'll probably get a aluminium radiator and new 180f thermostat to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Is it smoking? Is there oil/water mixing?

Don't do the 180 thermostat. It causes way more problems than it may solve. Stick with the OEM 195

Yup white smoke. The oil was in my radiator. The engine oil hasn't mixed it looks like it's a normal color, as it should be. From what it seems I've had a small leak sense January at the least And when I went out on the highway it finally got to the point it couldn't take it anymore. I'll be posting pictures as I get it torn apart. I'll also be replacing the timing belt while I'm in there. I drove it maybe for a total of 30 seconds with it overheated, but it was bad enough it ended up consuming all the coolant in the radiator. I ended up having to put water in the so it had enough time for the heat to stay there. What else would you guys change while I'm in there? What's intresting is when I did my oil change  last month I had no signs of coolant in the oil.
