Title: Turbo swap from 91 to 93
Post by: 1991 to 93na turbo swap on September 10, 2016, 05:10:57 PM
Hi guys,
I'm new here but I have had a 1993 Capri n/a for a few years. Great little car and I love it, however it blew an oil ring earlier this year and I rebuilt he engine (all stock parts) and it's wonderfully happy now. Then after I finish the reinstalling of the engine I found a 1991 turbo Capri in my local junk yard (no title. Only parts car). I want to keep the engine I just rebuilt in my 93 but I would like to swap the turbo over to my 93. Any advice and help would be wonderful. Mostly wondering about the compression if there is any difference between the 93 na and the 91 turbo and if the ecu is just plug and play or if there might be any other unforeseen problems. Thanks

The N/A engine has a different computer, smaller fuel injectors, different pistons (which is what give it the 9.4:1 compression ratio, as opposed to the XR2's 7.9:1 ratio) and different camshafts. The transmission that came in your N/A is also not nearly as tough as the one that came in the XR2, so you'll probably want to swap transmissions as well.

so id be better off swapping the motor got it. Do you know if I would have to re do the whole wiring harness for the rx2 ecu to fit? Thanks for the help!

What You Need:
Engine Harness
XR-2 Sensors
XR-2 intake with fuel injectors
Pedal box, and cables
turbo lines
XR-2 Transmission with the half-shafts
Intercooler, and all piping included
XR-2 computer

Things to note:
You're base Capri engine has a higher compression ratio I believe its 9:1 over the XR-2s 8:1, but im not exactly sure on the ratios its been too long. Just be careful with how much boost you throw at it, because higher compression ratios cause detonation. Also the reason you need the sensors and the XR-2s engine harness is without it the engine will not run, or will have the check engine light on.
In the long run it might be cheaper to just buy a XR-2 unless you want to be a bit unique.

I have a 91 xr2, sadly it's a parts car (no title for it). so I think I have decided that I want to keep the motor I have in my 93 na for a while and take some time to build/fix my xr2 engine/trans/turbo set up then just swap it in to my 93 later. Now I am just wondering what it would require to get the xr2 engine/trans/turbo set up to do like mid to low 200bhp on a daily? Thank you for your help!

For 200hp I think you could get away with better injectors, and a Rocketchip. The turbo in these cars are only about 6-8psi factory, and you can go up to 16psi on them.

I was thinking I would get a tunable after market ecu (I wanted to do ls1 coil packs for better ignition timing) and better boost control. Will the stock engine/internals really hold 16psi reliably?

Also if you were going to put more boost to a stock xr2 engine what/where would you get stronger internals and or a hard mounted inter cooler?

The stock XR-2 engine is built pretty well. The only real problem is the conrods, and lack of ARP bolts in the head, crank, and con-rods. Noone has done LS1 coils on here due to the lack of Coil On Plug. That would need a megasquirt ECU and a good amount of rewiring to work. As for intercooler im unsure of the size needed.

There's a thread in the Engine Swaps section covering turbo conversion:
