Title: Gotta Break the Ignition Lock
Post by: Surfnut on March 27, 2010, 03:46:00 PM
So,
I'm at the girlfriend's house.  She broke my ignition key in the door lock.
The car's unlocked but now I don't have a key to start the car.
She's got to get her car out of the garage (which the Capri is parked in front of) at 7 a.m. tomorrow - Sunday morning.

I've never broken an ignition lock before so can someone who knows please tell me how to do it ?

Do I cram a screwdriver in the lock and turn the whole works with vice grips / wrench ?

Any ideas for me ?  Please ?

Dave

hey man you can try that but if not..  you can remove the ignition thing pretty easy and see if you can get the key out

How do I get the ignition cylinder out ?
Normally this is something I would probably be able to just work at and eventually figure out but you have to remember that :
A) it's dark out,
B) I've only got a handful of tools in the trunk and
C) It's 10:15 Saturday night and I've got to have the car moved by 7 Sunday morning.

Assuming I can get the ignition lock out, can I unlock the steering lock and start the car ?

Thanks Bryan............

She got the door unlocked so I can get in the car.

Half the key is stuck deep inside the door lock and the other half is still on the key chain.

I've no doubt it will be a lot of work to get the key out the door lock so I figure that at this point it's better to concentrate on the ignition lock so I can get the thing started and moved.

once you get that pin out of the way you should be able to pull the tumbler out and get to the ignition mod and it look l (http://i984.photobucket.com/albums/ae324/basskickinwolf/photo-5-1.jpg)ike this

well yeah but your not going to like it lol.. and bro after to night get her some tools you know a drill and bits and box of some sort of cheep tools lol... if your dead serious just get a hammer and break the lower part of that tumber housing to get the tumbler out and you can start it that way   kind of same thing as a slide hammer

So I have to get the ignition cylinder out before I can start the car ?

How do the car thieves do it ?  I would've thought the big screwdriver idea might do it ?

thats the only other idea ihave for a fast fix you cant hot wire a car like they do on tv lol  but you need to get to this thing  (http://i984.photobucket.com/albums/ae324/basskickinwolf/photo-5-1.jpg)  which is here  (http://i984.photobucket.com/albums/ae324/basskickinwolf/photo-4.jpg) (http://i984.photobucket.com/albums/ae324/basskickinwolf/photo-7.jpg) but this is in the way

So I'm probably looking at pulling the black plastic off the bottom of the steering column.
Then smash the shit out of the bottom of the steering column to break the aluminum so I can get the ignition cylinder out

Then I'll be able to start the car with a screwdriver, right ?

Will the steering wheel still be locked or will the removal of the ignition cylinder unlock the steering wheel so I can turn it?

no it does not have to come out but something has to break before it will turn to start the car  i think thiefs break the igintion with a slide hammer which rips out the tumbler i would think then a screw driver will start it  if i set here long enought i might figure how to pick the lock lol

And yes, you're right again....I need to go to Harbor Freight and dump a hundred bucks to outfit her garage with emergency tools for me to use the next time she breaks my poor car !!!!!!

once you remove the tumbler thats what locks the steering wheel  i think i can go look again  but theres nothing else touchin the tumbler so it has to unlock the the wheel   you might just be able to a screwdrive flat head and  use it for a chizle and crack the ignition housing  instead of beating it up ?? and im just spit balling

now this is just my idea of how i would do it if i HAD TO MOVE IT LOL you could just push it out the way with her car and a blanket on the front just to get her car out and call a lock smith lol or a jack and roll it back ???

Well, my brother, everything you've explained sounds reasonable to me.

Thanks for trying your best to bail me out - again.  I sure appreciate your advice and help.

I'll start digging in early tomorrow morning and somehow get the car out of the way and go from there.

Poor Capri.  It takes so much abuse and it's been such a good car...

Thanks again Bryan!

just on last thing if you could get a drill man and drill that pin nothing borke and an easy fix to put it back after a new key   that pin is the only thing holding it in there!!

I never needed a drill to remove the cylinder, but I always had the key to remove it...

Never had to hotwire a capri but I don't think it would be too hard, but it might be hard to not clip wires in the steering column

how do you remove the steering wheel key mechanism ... i was throwing around the idea of making an in dash key with push button start for gigges also because my key thing broke the U shaped thing and it constantly falls out so it seemed like a cool fix. let me now if that's possible.

A lot of people that do the pushbutton mod still use the key - still need to insert it and turn to the start position but wire a momentary switch and relay to the starter solenoid. That way you dont need a complicated circuit to kill the engine

i was gona use an in dash key you turn to put car in acc. mode or run mode and next to it a push button to start the car

yeah u would not need a drill to remove the key clyinder if you have the key.. your right.. but he did not have the key to turn it around to push the pin in so only option was to remove that pin to pull out the tumbler or the other option the hammer lol  and hot wiring the car does not let the wheel turn you would have to cut the wires and find the right ones and then break the steering wheel lock  and trust me that takes to people pulling really hard to do that one

I totally forgot about the steering wheel lock yeah... crap.

Josh, unless you're up for totally re-engineering the steering column and start circuitry, keep the OEM ignition w/ the key & just add a pushbutton to start it

im deciding to tackle the ignition switch ... i found out that the tumble will come out and keep the car in ACC run mode so i decided since my external cut off switch can be my key and i always leave keys in my car anyways ... i will be splicing a toggle switch to the wires to take car in and out of ACC run and then install a push button start button. what do you guys think ? looking at it and doing simple research right now it look feasible

i took the ignition key slide off and im looking at the pins and correct me if im wrong

2x BATT = connect together for battery
2x A1 = connect together for ACC 1 posistion
2x A2 = connect for ACC 2 position
1x ST = Start wire
1x P1 = ?
1x 11 = ?
1x 12 = ?
1x P2 = ?

here is a diagram

A1......A1......12..11..ST
..................................P1
BATT..BATT..A2..A2..P2

for the toggle on off i should splice into the BATT wires
for the push button start  idk yet

How are you going to keep the wheel from locking?
Title: Gotta Break the Ignition Lock
Post by: Heavensheros on March 31, 2010, 05:33:00 AM
when you take the tumbler out of the key it comes out in run mode so steering is unlocked and key is in accessory mode ... if i take the 2 BATT wires and run them to a switch instead of the ignition plug its cutting power so switch off key ( which is out ) will be in run position but no power turn switch on kar is in run mode ... then add push button start... ill show a pictue after my class .... also is Russ still going to your place before the MACG ?
