I'm new to the forum. Sorry in advance if this has been covered before.
I saw Rocketman's post on front wheel bearing repair. Thanks for the instructions! Huge!
We took it apart to replace a wheel stud, but the wheel bearing seal was damaged.
Before I saw your post, I went to Pep Boys to press a new bearing and seal. They said the hub was too scored and needs to be replaced.
Two questions ...
Is there a way to determine if the hub is really bad enough to warrant replacement? There is a ridge scored into the shaft. (Please see photo.)

I saw a new hub online for over $200 new. Any other cheaper suggestions if replacement is needed?
TIA!

That one is indeed far too worn to use. The bearings will no longer seat tightly onto that shaft.
Russ has brand new OEM ones significantly cheaper than the what you found online. (I can take a guess where you found that price...)
Make sure you do not loose that pre-load spacer!

Ok, thanks, not surprised ...
Looking forward to hear from Russ!
Can I take this one step further?
It seems we'll have to remove the housing that contains the bearing race for replacement. If we go this far with removal, how close are we from replacing the half shaft for two novice mechanics? Is the trans/engine end fairly accessible, no special tools, etc? I think I saw the part assembly relatively cheap (~$50).

Or don't fix it if it ain't broken? :-)
Thanks again.

If the boots are good on the shaft and the rubber looks okay I wouldn't bother replacing it IMO. Its not that much more work, aside from draining & refilling the trans fluid
If you do replace axle (and are doing both) ONLY DO ONE AT A TIME! If both axles are removed at the same time, the spider gears inside the differential are no longer retained and can drop inside the transmission case. Fixing that requires removing & disassembling the transmission...not fun. Just a word of caution :)
