Title: What did you do to your Capri today?
Post by: Grimsleeper on October 05, 2014, 10:48:06 PM
I thought I'd start a thread to show what we are all doing to our Capri's on a daily basis.  I participate in a thread like this on the HD Road Glide forum and it's pretty interesting to see what gets posted.

So, I'll get it started!

I replaced a bent rear bumper bracket this weekend.  Well it actually turned into replacing a complete bumper assembly.  I bought a complete unit from a black 93 XR2 that is in a local salvage yard.  It turned out it was in much better shape that my original.  So with a little soap and water, 2 cans of white primer surfacer and a couple of red spray bombs, I had a new bumper that lined up well and fit very nicely.

Next project will be to install the 5th gear upgrade I got from Russ at Roo-Sport and install the new canvas convertible top.

So who's next?

I'm right in the middle of taking my head off. I've been losing coolant and found that small L shaped hose under the distributor had a pin hole in it. I replaced it only to notice I was still losing a small amount of coolant.

I didn't find the culprit for a few days then I noticed moisture and a few water droplets coming out the exhaust when the car was warm. After closer inspection I found a small leak oozing out one corner of the head gasket near #4. So I ordered a Felpro head gasket set and here I am. I have both the manifolds off and I'm starting on the front side.

I have one dilemma today as I pulled one head bolt out only to discover my new head bolts are an inch short. I had a hard time finding these. Does anyone know a source for head bolts? If I had to could I reuse the old bolts? I read in techcapri's manual refers to them as stretch bolts which kind of scares me to reuse the old ones.

After this project everything under the hood ought to be fairly new except the distributor and oil pump. Those I'll tackle in the next year.

I've also bought new struts, mounts and boots I'll put on next weekend. Then comes a new set of Cooper Cobra GT tires. ;)

Correct, the head bolts are torque to yield bolts. Some will reuse them...I won't. Just get a set of ARP head studs for a Miata and call it done.

I like this thread, I follow one like it on the Festiva Forum.  I ordered a convertible top.  Hopefully get it weather proofed next week.  I gave $500 for it and got it running with new gas, a fuel filter and repaired terminal to the fuel rail.  I followed that with new wheels and tires, oil pump, water pump, alternator and belts  I have a replacement clock and am going to dive into the now heat problem when the top is fixed.

All of the 'real' TTY bolts I have used have a much different torquing procedure, such as a progression from 35>55>70ftb-lbs in a pattern, then add 45°, and add another 90° in the same pattern. The turning via degrees of rotation while ignoring the applied torque level is the final bit that stretches the bolt to it's maximum "Yield"

The Mazda engines don't have such a procedure. I am positive that the bolts stretch, but nothing like a true TTY. FWIW I have re-used them without issue before. I believe twice in one instance. No issues to report on my end

What did I do to my Capri today? I've been driving my red XR2 daily and ignoring maintenance that needs to be done. Snow's coming, though :/

Picked up a new(to me) rear bumper and a right quarter panel.  Well, I asked for a quarter panel, what they gave me was a quarter of the car.  They cut it in front of the front seat to the console and out the back.  What can you expect for $100?  Barely got it in my short bed pickup.  Also, a top latch, a console and the all the trim pieces off the top cover for $50.  $85 for the bumper.  How'd I do?

Thanks for the suggestion. After checking I'm having the same problem with the Miata. It seems like old 1.6L head bolts are hard to find. Advance lists the same wrong bolt for the Miata as the Capri. Where did you get the Miata bolts at? I saved the bolt position and will go to max torque. I think final torque is 54-60 ft lbs. I'll just go to 60 if I have to use the old bolts. I've done that once before on a 350 with success.

Today I dropped my head off at the machine shop. Right now it's sitting in the hot tank. Tomorrow he will pressure test it and resurface it. If all goes well then and if it needs it he will do a valve job. At a minimum he'll put the new seals in.

Tomorrow I'll start on the struts, tie rods and ball joints while I'm waiting.

Oh yeah, I dropped the valve cover off too. He is going to clean that up so I can paint it. Any tips there? I figured heat paint, but do I need primer? The factory paint didn't have any and I'm not experienced painting aluminum.

Hey this is looking pretty promising.  It's cool to see what we've all been doing.

So today my new canvas top arrived.  However the DVD installation guide was left out.  It's on the way though.  Should be here before the weekend.  Instead I started making templates to complete the boot floor.  I'm going to finish the floor out to the rear bulkhead and up the back behind the tail light housings.

Not totally necessary, but starting with an etching primer should help the adhesion.

Had the front end aligned, seems to be in great shape and put bead sealer on three wheels in an attempt to keep air in the tires.

Tried out the trailer hitch today.  Got it off a junk yard capri, I think U-haul or somebody makes these, it bolts to the tie-down points.  Purchased a used Harbor Freight 4x8 trailer, plan to make a mini camper and haul it with my 93 xr2. Unloaded, I could barely tell I was pulling anything, these trailers are about 250 pounds.  I think I'll wind up at about 600 pounds when done, the towing height will be about 36", the height of the capri trunk, expanded will be 6 to 7 feet, I haven't finished the design...

Today I finished installing my new struts, mounts and boots. It was a fun project. I also changed the lower ball joints and tie rod ends.

I got my head back from the shop. He did a great job with it. I finished cleaning it up and power brushed it. I then painted it and the valve cover a gun metal grey. I saw that color and liked it. It will contrast well with the red letters. I left the little rectangle around the letters brushed aluminum.

I'll post a picture after I get 'er back together. :)

Tomorrow will be head setting day along with the other stuff.

Hey Mitch,

Which struts did you go with?  I'm ready to change mine too but I haven't really settled on which ones I want to use.

I went with the Monroe Sensa-tracs. One reason was price and availability at Advance Auto Parts. Order them online and either pick up in the store or ship home for free.

Go to procouponcode.com/advance and use their codes which are good up to 40% off. Break up the orders into multiple orders to maximize your discount. I believe I ended up saving 35%. I bought a bunch of other stuff recently and saved over $320 using them codes. Every code on his page is good.

For example, if one code says save $50 on purchases over $125 only put items as close to $125 on that order, then check out and start your next order. It's a strategy that works well. It's fun saving money.

What I did was picked it up at the store after ordering online. Then I borrowed their strut coil spring compressor while I was there. There tools are marked by kit #. You want kit# 1.

When ordering online the item must be in stock to complete an in store pick up. Check the store availability online. If the store doesn't have the item then call them and give them the part #. They will order it for you and have it there the next day. Then when they do get it you call them again and tell them to return the item to stock so you can complete your transaction online with your discount code. Then you complete your order online. Writing this out it sounds like a hassle but it's a fairly easy process.

If I remember correctly with struts, mounts and boots I paid like $300 for a $420 order. You can't beat that price anywhere.

Installation was easy. Just make sure you maintain your spring orientation with their rubber seats. Putting back together it's easiest to stand the strut on end and hold one compressor with your legs while you loosen the other side. Spin it around and keep repeating. Otherwise your spring jumps around and makes you cuss, lol.

Another trick is the top nut is hard to break loose once you have the assembly out. The shaft wants to spin. Vise grips or a pipe wrench won't hold that slick shaft. An easy remedy is lay the strut on it's side. Stick a big screwdriver in between two studs on the strut mount. That will hold it so you can get the big end nut off.

You'll need a 13, 14, 17 and 19 mm sockets and wrenches. A breaker bar helps. I torque everything so if you go that route the top nut is 30 ft lbs, the mount nuts 20 and the bottom bolts 80.

Which Capri? I have 7 in the driveway, and 6 at  the barn....All of them need something....new tops being the most common need....

Changing a timing belt tomorrow, but today? Ahhhhh.....today is a holiday. Time to relax!

Today was torquing day. I got the head on, manifolds... everything but the timing belt.

Tomorrow is the fun day, hearing it run.

In all those Capris, do you have a set of 94 tail lights and some OEM front marker light lenses?

The lower pivot bolt on my XR2 was jerry-rigged since I got it. The nut on the bolt popped off while I was driving the other day (I heard it but didnt know where it came from lol) so I got to replace that today. Was rattling around and making not so friendly noises. Also dragged the GTXR2 out of it's parking spot, I really need to work on that thing.

I was putting the top timing belt back on when I had a Doh moment. Nothing to bolt it to! #&$@*
I forgot to put the backing plate on behind the cam gears. I found it hiding in the corner, lol.

So I tore her back down and done it right. I swear I can change the timing belt blindfolded. I should have her running in a couple hours.

I do not at the moment....all the 94 tails I have are melted pretty badly. I have scheduled a repair session in the next couple of weeks,  and hope to fully restore at least one pair. Did you also need the center license plate section?

You don't HAVE to, but it looks incomplete if you don't. There will be a large gap between the bottom of the lights and the bumper, that looks terrible, IMO....

Well, I'm amassing parts to do a suspension upgrade.  I ordered some KYB parts from Amazon Friday night.  Doorbell just rang and it's USPS with a delivery from Amazon.  Talk about rapid response, WOW!  Now, I need to get down to O'Rielly's for some upper strut mounts.

Hey Russ, I need a strut tower brace.  You're next on my list.  I'll give you a call tomorrow.

I saw on the yahoo group someone who had built a rear tie bar that tied the rear suspension together.  I think I'm going to give it shot and try to build one of those as well.  It didn't look that difficult.

My auto doesn't have the rear sway bar but it's easily added if you find one off a XR2. The bolt holes are there.

Today I'll take the car for a spin and enjoy the fruits of my labor.

Installed a new top.  Wish I could have afforded the good one.  The cheap one is just that.  But it'll keep the rain off and the wind out for a while.  The top fit was okay and it went on easily.  Got a few loose ends to tie up but I'll be ready for winter.  Any one need a quart of glue?  Next fix the heater, gonna be down to freezing this weekend.

I have to have to work on my right one also.  You really have to lift hard to open it.  The left one I believe is broken.  The front seems to be disconnected and sometimes when you lift it, it will get wedged and won't function.  I think I've read on here that same era 323 door handles are the same.  Would someone confirm that for me?

Check the old motor. I decided to dissect mine and the brushes were still about 90%. Then I took the side gear housing cover off and the old grease was rock hard. I cleaned it out good and lubricated with lithium grease. They work like brand new.

I bought new brake pads. I'm going to install them today.

BF 323 correct 86-89. Your problem is likely the large rod coming off of tyhe handle. With time they a can slip out or down and cause your issue.

Sounds good. Did you notice a difference in spring height? I debated whether to buy some or not. It didn't take much with the strut spring compressor to relieve pressure for disassembly. I was questioning whether the springs were wore or not. Mine too I noticed a huge difference. I wish I took the time to buy spring insulators but I can live with what I got.

Replaced a very noisy leaking head pipe gasket Friday.  Sounds much better for now but the muffler has several pinholes in it so will be doing that later.  Maybe a 2 1/4" system with a high flow cat and turbo muffler it there is enough room.  When I went to pick it up, the mechanic explained that the nuts came off easily, but he couldn't get then to thread back on so he re-threaded then 7/16-14.  Okay, I can't believe that a Mazda has SAE threads on the exhaust manifold.   I figure I'll have to install new studs in the near future.  Anyone know the correct thread or if I can go to Mazda dealer and get the correct ones?

Thanks, Jack Byrd

There aren't any SAE threads. The exhaust should be M10 x1.5 if  I remember right. The exhaust studs/bolts are pretty notorious for getting corroded & not playing nice
Title: Re: What did you do to your Capri today?
Post by: greywolf27030 on November 11, 2014, 03:42:51 PM
Thanks for the info.  The M10 would be a little under .400" while the 7/16 is .437", so I guess I'll be working on that again in the future.  The originals came off easily, and I was surprised when I came back to find out that he wasn't able to get the original nuts back on?  Do you suppose that you can go to a dealer and get the studs?  The nearest one is 60 miles or I would go check it out.

Thank, Jack

PS  Removed the front seat again so I could replace the little rubber bumper on the clutch pedal to eliminate the irritating clicking when operating the clutch.

I also recently took out the little rubber bumper on the clutch pedal.  The clicking noise was driving me crazy.  I didn't replace it.  Instead, I taped a penny to it to close off the hole.  I think I pulled a back muscle trying to contort my body into position to fix it.

I haven't tried the cruise control since I taped the penny over the hole but I think (hope) it will now work.

I didn't even try to get in there without removing the seat.  I also installed a wire to the heat flapper so I could have heat in the up coming cold snap.  Today I installed shifter bushings in the transmission end of the shift rod.  It was a PITA, but having seen it apart now, I think it would be a relatively quick and easy job should I ever need to do it again.  The next job may be an a quick shifter.  Has anyone ever extended the lower end of the shifter to decrease the throw?  Maybe 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch.

So it has finally turned cold here in the great state of Texas.  My 170 degree thermostat was too cool for the cold weather.  So this morning I changed the thermostat back to the the stock 190 degree unit.  Drove it 200 miles this afternoon and actually had heat and the engine warmed up enough to get off the high idle circuit.

Well it's not exclusive to Roo-sport, but that's by far the easiest way to get the gears.

It only works on the XR2 manual transmission. It's a slightly different gear ratio : .717 vs .795

This results in a roughly 500rpm drop at highway speeds.

Grim - I had those exact same experiences with a 180 degree thermostat. I highly recommend stock for everyone. It just works.
Did you get an instructions printout with your gearset? If not ask for them. I used gear-oil rated silicone RTV to seal the 5th gear cover back on. They make it for RWD diff covers, it works perfect

Thanks Matt.  I did get the installation printout.  I was just wondering if there was a factory gasket there.  I used the 170 degree thermostat here in the 100+ degree heat here in Texas.  The 190 therm was letting it get just a bit too warm for my taste.

Replaced leaking heater hose and the 90* elbow hose under the distributor.  There was also a small (1/4") 90* hose that was also listed for the cooling system, but can't for the life of me find a place to put it.  Any suggestions?  Got the heater flap wired down so I've got heat now, and ordered an aluminum arm from Russ to make the repair.  Also took advantage of his pre-Black Friday sale and ordered another $100 worth of stuff.  I'm gonna be styling in the red Capri tee.

Removed my IAC and blew out some crud in the water line.  Then I discovered the entire lower water hose coming from the bottom of the block is clogged with mud.  I guess that will have to wait for another day.  I'm wondering how much mud is in the bottom of the block and how to clean it out.

Worked on the IAC again today.  Replaced the lower hose and spent 45 minutes drilling (literally) the crud out of the lower (manifold) hose barb.  It was packed with black crud as the old hose had been.  I expect the problem was some kind of stop leak.  After letting the engine warm up, the hose was still cold, so I still may not have any circulation though the IAC.  If this doesn't cure the problem, any ideas on what should be done best?  Maybe drain the radiator again and blow air though both hose to insure that they are open?

I also was going to install the new sway bar bushings I got from Russ, but they didn't fit.  I'm going to measure them and give him a call and see what the problem is.

Had an interesting chat with Russ yesterday.  I had ordered rear sway bar bushings and they didn't fit.  Apparently early cars (like mine) had a 14mm sway bar and later cars had a 17mm which is the size of available bushings.  I found a thread on sway bars that was started by a member whose car also had a 14mm bar.  Check your bar size prior to ordering.  I'm going to be looking for a larger bar or smaller bushings and will report on my findings.

Gasoline no ethanol

I have a 93 N/A Capri

Starting with 96,459mi. I have recorded MPG, using E10 87 octane gasoline

30.3 MPG for 2,416mi.

The last 2 tanks I have used non-ethanol (E0) 87 octane

Seat-of-pant, feels more "zippy"

30.7 MPG for 492mi.

In El Dorado, KS. it is .18 cents more

I will continue using E0 because of drivability

Anyone else have any comments or experience?

Thank You. david.sirota

Changed the trans-axle lubricant.  I used Pennzoil Syncromesh, it really does shift better.  I'm guessing it hadn't been changed in 145K, I'll bet that there was a gorilla installing the drain plug and speedo drive.  I also tore back into the coolant piping for the IAC.  The manifold nipple was stopped up again.  I went to the other end (at the heater hose and it was stopped up also.  Cleared both and found out the throttle body is also stopped up.  That'll come another day.

Started trying to figure out why it wouldn't start.  The battery was down to 40%, but charged it up and it still wouldn't do anything.  Not the weather for this.

Nope definitely not the weather for mechanics unless you have a heated garage. Load test the battery. If it has a bad cell it'll read lower than normal even without a load. Like 10.5v. Double check your connections and the head ground. Neutral or clutch safety switch?
Then procede on to checking the solenoid and ignition switch. The starter motor should have given earlier signs.

No previous signs? I'd guess a bad connection which the Capri is famous for. :)

Thanks Mitch, I worked on it a little yesterday and discovered some corroded terminals.  I can't load check the battery, but charged it to full charge, got one click out of it and the charge dropped to 65%.  May have found the problem..... ::)  Hope so anyway.  Will take the battery to the Zone tomorrow.

Thanks again, Jack

Seems the corroded terminals were the answer to my starting problems.  The weather was better today, so I fired it up and drove around awhile.  The terminals looked fine, but it's seems to be doing okay now.  Next, does anyone know if I can bypass the coolant flow through the throttle body if I can't get it cleared it out?

Thanks, Jack Byrd

Looks like we are all having issues with grounds and connections.  I had to replace the gasket on the water neck and clean the grounds that are located on the bracket that is bolted on to the top water neck bolt.  A bad ground can cause all kinds of problems.  She was bucking and running rough yesterday.  The boost was doing all kinds of crazy things.  Cleaned and tightened those connections and she seems to be back to normal now.  I guess I'll find out tomorrow with a drive over to Shreveport.

A few months ago, before it went into winter storage, I replaced the springs and struts.  I purchased the H&R springs from Amazon and KYB struts from Rock Auto (along with new strut boots and strut mounts from Amazon).   I took a picture before I replaced the struts and after.  I forgot to measure the distance between the tires and wheel well before I replaced the struts.  But I think you can see the difference.  Hopefully this helps someone decide if it's worth it.

I haven't really had a chance to try it out before I put it in storage for the winter.  I live north of Detroit and when I picked up the car from the place that did the installation, it was about 25 degrees and everything was tight.  I had never driven the car before at that temperature so of course everything felt weird.  A week later I stored it.  I'm looking forward to spring!

Not today, but last Sunday I got all three started (2 in garage and one outside)  All had dead batteries.  In the spring I plan on figuring out which one is in the best shape and getting it on the road again.  Barb's 93 had a transmission leak (automatic) White 91 runs real rough and needs brakes Red 91 (newest purchase) had fresh coat of paint and seems to run ok but it came with a hard top and we haven't had it off yet so don't know condition of soft top.  It  does have a winking (non-closing headlite)  So we'll see what happens when it finally gets warm here in NEPA.

I read somewhere, maybe when I got my new top or in the owners manual? it said not to let the top down below 60°.  The plastic window is not as flexible then. But if it's in a warm garage who cares? 😊

I got tickled last night. I pulled up to a red light and a car with two little boys in it pulled up beside me. I turned my headlights on and the one boy shook his brother and pointed. So I cycled the lights as they looked with their mouths dropped. I guess the younger generations never seen pop up lights. It was a cool moment and one reason to preserve this car. Come to think of it you don't see pop up lights anymore for the aerodynamics. The last one I had was a 91 Firebird.

Question:  What type of Vinyl Convertible Top Cleaner/Protectant do others use?

I have been using RaggTopp, but not happy with the cleaner

Well today I tried out my plasti-dipping skills.  My hood was look a bit worse for wear.  The paint was flaking and cracking so I gave it a quick sand to knock down the ridges and high spots, then covered it in matte black dip.  I think it looks much better with a black bonnet than all the faded, nasty red paint.

I have been working on my 92 fixing things that my father inlaw and I either couldn't afford to do or just didn't have time to do. I started off with a nice new set of door handles from Roo-sport. The handles broke off one winter storm about 5 years ago and impossible to find around here. Next is CV axles and lower ball joints. at 111000 miles and 23 years they are starting to ware out. I'm also doing a timing belt and a thermostat. After that I'm putting a new radio in it and cleaning it up real good so I can put the car into our local car show. I'm hoping to find a cheap used headlight control module as well. I'll also eventually get to fixing my cruise control, replace the windshield, and maybe get it repainted. My father inlaw was just going junk the car but after he died I decided to fix up my/ his old car.

Crankshaft23, the rotary switches in the headlight motors usually cause most of the problems with them, not the headlight control module. Try cleaning them first - there's some good info in some of the threads here.

Brand new set of 4 Yokohama S-drive tires. Also bought a new PCV valve and special ordered a valve cover gasket and grommet set. She's got an oil-spraying issue that gets things all dirty and smelly on hard drives, so that's next on the agenda. The weather forecast says it's going to be in the 60's next week, so I started up my Capri yesterday. It turned over really slow due to the battery only holding about 7 volts while cranking. Looks like I'll be buying and installing a new battery this weekend.

Charged the battery and put it back in and now I'm running again.  I didn't get the ignition turned off completely when I turned it off last.  I'm considering removing that locking mechanism.  This happened previously when I left it at the mechanics.  Yes, believe it or not the key will come out without the ignition being completely turned off.

I always disconnect the ground cable from the battery when I store the car for winter. Then I periodically use a small float charger to maintain it. The battery was a cheap $40 one and they seem to last 5-6 yrs. The only problem I've had with the battery being drained was from the trunk light not turning off.
I never had a problem with the ignition lock, then again I only have the Capri's keys, remote, and house key on this key ring to keep it light to help prevent wearing out the ignition switch.

recently i've been having a bit of an issue with my '94 Capri, here.

after a few days of sitting in the P-lot, my '94 Capri won't start. having a 'spare' battery in the back (took it out of my '86 Saab 9000), i can jump-start it. today, because of the nice weather, i wanted to make a short trip/do some shopping, but the Capri didn't want to  start. so i took my '98 Saab 9000. after returning i checked the battery of the Capri. the voltage was 11.98, and decreasing quite rapidly. in about 5 minutes it went down to 11.85 Volts.

here's the question: do i have a rotten battery, or do i have a 'current-leakage', somewhere? the battery came with the car and is a 360Amp Varta...seller told me he bought the battery new (2 years ago). (but i think he didn't do long distances, further more, the car had been sitting on his driveway for a year, when i bought it). some weeks ago i tried to use another battery, from a scrapped 9000, but the result was quite the same. when i exchanged batteries the Varta was (after about 6 mnths) still at 12.something Volts, so i thought that the Varta was still ok. but now the Varta is empty after 4 or 5 days. (after re-reading this text it looks like a 'current-leakage' to me. will have to charge the battery and see what happens, i think. input is still welcome!)

another issue:
my central locking system doesn't work anymore. fuse is ok...would that be wiring or other hardware?

still there: moisture in the storage area...

I was troubleshooting a Capri with a dead battery, put my good battery in and it started and ran, checked the voltage after test driving and such, and it was putting out over 20 volts, bad alternator.  Put my good battery back in my daily driver and it was dead the next day.  Over-volts killed my good battery, wound up buying 2 batteries and replacing the alternator.

You should of exchanged the new battery for free then bought the alternator. What's your new alternator putting out? I read a lot of posters saying these alternators put out 15.0v which mine does too. That's kind of strange when almost all cars will put out 14-14.5v.

Sunday was a beautiful 70 degrees here in Wisconsin!
I installed the new battery, then I removed the ugly fuel filter off the firewall and ran fuel line directly from the firewall to the quick disconnect on the fuel rail to kick-off my engine bay clean-up goal.
Had fun taking it out initially, but about 15 miles later the car started pulling to the left when I hit the brakes. By the time I got home, the brake fluid was smoking off the front passenger side pads/rotor. I'm guessing the caliper must have seized up and dragged until it got so hot it caused the piston seal to fail.

problem solved: i needed a new battery! the old one had only 11,7Volts and starting the engine didn't sound very convincing. the new battery is a bit stronger with 54Ah, thus being a bit bigger it was a bit of a hassle to fit it.

still remains to be checked: central locking...

Agreed...no advantage at all and more trouble likely causing bump steer with the different geometry.. The calipers will bolt to the Capri knuckles and then the Galant upgrade which is still better than the Escort stuff you are talking about.

IIRC spline count won't match the Capri axles. That'd take some pretty serious modifications to overcome. The balljoint locations also offer some interesting camber hurdles. Im not sure how much if affects caster
The escort gt's hubs have 26 splines unlike the capri's 24, but that doesn't matter, I'm not using capri axles anymore.

Agreed...no advantage at all and more trouble likely causing bump steer with the different geometry.. The calipers will bolt to the Capri knuckles and then the Galant upgrade which is still better than the Escort stuff you are talking about.
I agree too if I was just trying to swap to escort knuckles without modifying them, but I'm not going to do that....LOL. I'm fully aware of the calipers bolting to the capri knuckles and the 89 galant rotors. Infact I'll be using 90's galant or turbo eclipse rotors in my build (galant=4x114 and eclipse=5x114)which are even beefier yet.

The escort does have a superior bearing system, so there's that.
That's debatable, the capri has tapered bearing vs the escort which has roller bearing. Tapered bearings are stronger, but more expensive.
Hopefully I'll have some time tomorrow to post some pics with details between bf and bg knuckles.

Well then let'er rip. I think Matt and I are both curious as to where this is going. We are both keen on the guys doing the 5 lug swaps on the 4wd Proteges( Bolt on affair) and the BF GTX's which is quite a bit more involved.

Yep, I'd like to see what you're up to with that. Maybe start a new thread for it?

The Escort bearing system is at least a lot more simple than the Capri system, and easier to work on

lets see; this week i replaced a fuel filter, changed my wheels and tires, fixed fuel injector wiring and connector corrosion, fixed a corroded ground on a turn signal bulb housing, and fixed corrosion on the 12v auxiliary power outlet. Tomorrow i'm doing platinum spark plugs, coolant flush(might save for a later day), ignition timing, oil and filter change, and painting my brake calipers red because race car.

coolant flush, oil change, thermostat change to a 180 degree and now i have no worries of overheating and it runs pretty nicely at 200 degree while pushing it, tried to clear the codes by disconecting the negative lead on the battery and holding and contiuosly pressing down the brake pedal then reconnecting and turning the car on. CEL is still on and i still cant firgure out why, jumped the terminal to check for codes and just kept getting threes in sets of threes but i cant find out what a 333 code is or if is even exists so i am lost on that aspect but it runs better now anyways
Title: Re: What did you do to your Capri today?

You're best off going back to the 195* thermostat. The 160 and 180 tend to cause a lot of issues, and you'll get zero heat in the winter.

I wonder if your code is just a Code 3 that repeats, which would be CID sensor or ignitor module in distributor.
If the code re-appears after removing the neg batt lead, then it is a persistent error, the ECU would not remember it
Title: Re: What did you do to your Capri today?
Post by: chrispoe on May 07, 2015, 10:25:20 AM
Rocketman is right, change back to the regular 195 thermostat, installing a lower temp thermostat won't improve cooling. The problems with installing a lower temp thermostat is that the engine was designed to operate at 195 and running it at a lower temp will increase engine wear, lower fuel economy, and degrade performance. Another issue is that the radiator fan still won't turn on until it reaches about 198 and the cooling fan will short cycle due to the fact the lower thermostat will just stay open anyway.

Well, I only drive my capri in the summer anyways and it's around 190 degrees while driving so I'd say it's fine lol. Also something is wrong with the ignition in my car as it cuts out at around 5200 rpm and randomly when it feels like it during regular driving. The engine stumbles and loses power when it does this so I'm gunna start a thread on that and see what kind of help I can get.
Title: Re: What did you do to your Capri today?
Post by: Rocketman on May 07, 2015, 06:57:09 PM
It's still an issue. Running at 190 on the gauge doesn't mean it's okay. The gauges are not accurate enough to tell you an exact number (later year capri gauges switched to Cold/Hot, not a numerical readout for this exact reason)

These engines are designed to work at a certain temp.
If the ECU doesn't see that's it's at normal temp, it causes problems.
-You burn more fuel. When the ECU sees the engine is cold(er) it throws in more fuel to richen the mixture, trying to warm the engine up.
-Thermal cycling like Chris said. The fan kicks on at 210 degrees. That means instead of cycling between 195 and 210 degrees (15 degree difference) the engine will now cycle between 180 and 210 degrees (30 degree difference) That might not seem like much, but the head & block expand/contract at different rates (aluminum head, iron block, aluminum expands more) so it causes wear on the headgasket. Not a whole lot. Usually it only sees this from a cold start to warm up, then shut down. But with a colder thermostat you have much wider, more rapid temperature swings, that accelerate wear on the headgasket and other components.

You can get away with it if:
-You tune an aftermarket ECU for a different target temperature
-You change the fan sensor to a corresponding lower temperature

Again, because the engine is made of different metals that expand/contract at different rates - the engineers designed the parts to fit together and work best at one specific temperature and the thermostat's job is to keep it there. Parts will fit different, and wear differently when they are run at a different temperature. (thats why head gaskets blow when these engines overheat, the aluminum expands too much, and the head warps out of shape)

You could run a colder t-stat on an old V8 and get away with it because the fan ran constantly right off the engine, and the tolerances within the engine were drastically different than today's stuff. They were also generally ALL iron (head + block). And stuff got rebuilt a lot more often back then.

Title: Re: What did you do to your Capri today?
Post by: mitch1204 on May 08, 2015, 04:50:28 AM
Yep, she likes it hot and so do I. Different thermostats were applicable only in some pre 1995 vehicles. More like before 70''s vehicles and spotty between the 70's and 1995. It's unheard of today. Don't mix old thoughts with new technology.Listen to your electric fan turn on and off. It just doesn't happen. It's closely monitored and controlled. The engineers are doing what's best for the engine not to mention controlling emissions. If they wanted to run the engine cooler they would have the fan come on earlier and run it longer.

The ECU has set parameters and everything from the electric fan to fuel to spark advance rely on how the engine was designed. When one goes to making changes then the ECU needs reprogrammed

A good explanation as said is the car has a cast iron block and an aluminum head. I can't think of any vehicle with that combo where you can play with the temperature parameters.

The only reason they sell different thermostats is one part number might fit 30 vehicles. Who sells them? Part stores that want to sell you more parts.

Unless you have a 20+ year old vehicle with cast iron heads stick with OE thermostats. You'll thank us later or ask how to change a head gasket. :)

I would be more concerned with the cast iron block and the aluminum pistons running at the lower temp.

I like the 18 inch, if you go with one of the others, I'll take them... ;D

My clutch pedal went to the floor the other day, I replaced the slave cylinder.  It pumped right up, the next morning, no clutch pedal again.  Guess I'll get a master next.

The 16s and 18s are both 5x114 lug pattern and won’t bolt to the stock Capri 4x114 hubs. The 18s are also wider rims with 245/r45/18 tires and would require spacers, I even had to use spacers to fit them on the probe so they wouldn’t rub on the struts.  I was originally planning to use the 16s but after mocking them up, I don’t think they look as good on my Capri as the 17s.

Replaced all the marker light bulbs as well as the driving light bulbs, since they're all the same bulb anyway. I originally started to diagnose a dim driver's front marker light but then found that every bulb except the passenger front side marker was bad. Replaced them all and now everything lights up as it should. Previous owner wasn't even aware those red side markers lit up, they've been dead for so long! Feels pretty good.

Also picked up a pair of headlights. The old ones are all originals and fogged like crazy, so since I have to pull a headlight motor tomorrow anyway I figured, may as well replace both headlights while I'm at it. If weather and everything holds up, I'll be trying to do both the headlight repairs and a valve cover gasket replacement. We'll see how it goes.

About fifty miles from home, going to a car show, my transmission decided to implode.  Started out slipping out of fifth and then started making metallic clinking noises.  Only had it on the road for a week after installing a new Excedy clutch.  Wonder if the mechanic failed to put fluid in it.  Didn't have a socket so I couldn't check it out.  And my pickup has a flat, it if weren't for back luck, I wouldn't have any luck at all.  Anyone know of a tranny in northwest NC.

I'm halfway home from my Florida trip. Stopped in GA for the night. Car is driving great on the interstate. Is it normal for the AC to bog the motor down? You notice it when you turn it on. Maybe the compressor is almost wore out?

Jack if a tranny jumps out of gear usually means the gears weren't fully meshing in the first place. Unless there is serious damage manuals are easily rebuildable if parts are available. Usually means new bearings and synchros. Gears and shafts are a different story. Maybe just your 5th gear synchronizer come apart. That would explain the rattling and then maybe wedged in some gears. They are brass and would take most of the damage over the steel parts.

I did see a 1991Capri for sale in the Asheville Craigslist. Guy just overheated it and decided to sell it. Good looking car. Asking $700 you might get it for $500. Look under cars for sale and do a search on Capri.

Thanks for the tip.  I'm going to the transmission shop tomorrow to talk to a guy about an upholstery job I'm doing for him and was going to check into rebuilding.  The tip on the XR2 is great also.  I may be more interested in doing the head than a transmission.

Hey Mitch all AC compressors are power hogs.  It takes a good bot of power to turnthe compressor, so you it is normal to feel a little "BOG" when you engage the AC.  Not much to worry about.  Even my HEMI RT Magnum fluctates as the compressor clutch turn on and off.

Okay thanks, I won't worry as much now. It kept me cool the whole way home. I did turn it off when I needed more hp to climb hills as a precaution because the temp gauge was running a hair higher than normal. I guess that's expected when it's hot out and you're running 70 mph.

I did have a weird occurrence. I stopped at a Wal-Mart and since I had my dogs with me I left the car on idling in the parking lot with the AC on. I come back out and left only to see a wall of smoke behind me. Oh crap, not a good time to break down being 180 miles from home. I immediately pulled into an Advance AP across the highway. All I could find is it appeared oil come out the oil cap and pooled on the exhaust manifold. Why it done that? I added a 1/3 qt of oil and no problem the rest of the way. The PCV is new. Oil had to back up under the valve cover. Maybe it's just a bad cap. I'll buy a new one. I wouldn't think the oil drain is clogged with recent head work. Oil pressure was a little higher than normal after that for 30 miles or so. 3000 miles into a synthetic oil change. Maybe a cheap filter. I think I put a Pure One filter on it. Oil change and new cap and I'll see if the problem returns. It sure was weird.

He doesn't want to admit it because it costs him $$. You pull the axles fluid comes out. If for some unknown mystery it was dry before its still his job to top the tranny fluid off. If there was a leak afterwards it was from a damaged axle seal. There's no way around it he screwed up. He needs to suck in his pride and man up.

Good luck with that. I had a mechanic replace the rack only to have the power steering pump fail 10 miles later (which we both know was because they didn't fill the system properly). They put in another pump and that one failed two weeks later along with the 'new' rack. That was back in the first week of April. It's about to be July and I'm still trying to get them to pay up. They both refuse to admit it was their fault and refuse to reimburse me.

As for the two quarts, according to the service manual for the G-series transmission the capacity is 3.4 quarts.

One weird thing, though. I took the car to Mazda to have them do the manual transmission flush. I gave them 4 quarts of Pennzoil Synchromesh. They gave me back 2.5 quarts. The transaxle capacity is listed at 3.4 quarts in the service manual. Uh...what? ???

RTV is necessary when doing the valvecover. The gaskets do not seal properly in the corners near the cam & distributor caps. Just a small dab is all that is needed

Look ma, no more oil around the valve cover! Got to drive the car around pretty hard and not come home to the smell of burning oil, which was great. Ended up skipping the distributor cap, rotor and fuel filter for now just to get the car back on the road. The battery needs to be replaced soonish so as soon as I do that, so goes those parts (the distributor cap screws are pretty much impossible to get to with the battery in place).

Of course, once I was deep into the work I found out a good reason why the valve cover was leaking. The bolts were all loose! I could actually loosen almost all the bolts save for the three in the spark plug well by hand. I wanted to just hit myself, but it was a good time to wash the valve cover and put a new gasket on anyway. You can be sure those bolts are on properly now!

Went to a junkyard in Jacksonville today, 1/2 price sale at Ace Junkyard.  They had a red 93 xr2 that had not been severely picked over.  Rusting apart, looked like was driven until it got to be unsafe.  When they picked it up to put on the wheel stands, the front struts just fell out of the mounts.  Scored a like new soft top, tri-spoke wheel covers, driver window regulator.  I tested the turbo, there was NO play in the shaft, I ran out of steam (100 degrees in the shade), so it is still there if someone is near.

My name is Nick and I am new to the forum.  I have been reading it for a little while, but just became a member.  I am working on replacing the water pump, timing belt, pulleys, hoses, radiator and thermostat on my 91 N/A capri.  I figured while I am in there i might as well clean as much as I can also.  I have changed timing belts on a lot of cars, but never a front wheel drive.  Wow, big difference.  No place for hands or tools.  While putting everything back together, one of my water pump bolts broke in the block.  I used the quart of blood technique to get it out.  That is I tore up my knuckles and pinched my fingers with pliers for 2 1/2 hours until I finally got it out.  Dodged a bullet there, as this is my every day driver.

The next thing I will be working on is the brakes, and the control arm bushings.

Over the last 6 months or so I have done a lot to my capri, here is a list.
Fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, fuel filter, front and rear struts, front hubs and bearings, front and rear rotors (I have a question about the front rotors but I'll post it on the technical page), rear calipers, rear bearings, throttle position sensor, front trans mount, new convertible top, CV axles both sides, ignition coil, spark plug wires, ball joints and outer tie rods.

I have to get it running safely before I can start doing any mods, she sat for a long time before she got forced back into action not to long ago.  She has been through 2 long hibernations and has fired back up when needed both times.  Gotta lover her.

After buying this jewel for $500 two months ago and many obstacles in between I finally made the trip to NC and picked up my 94 Capri NA automatic. Between that and the Magenta color makes this a one of kind.

yesterday evening i replaced my MY94 back light units by pre-94 units. the Capri failed the annual test on those, because there was a difference in brightness. both units were somewhat melted (do i mention something new? ;-) ). i now only need the black plate between the units, but that will be no reason to fail the test again. other things on the Capri that need(ed) replacing: washer pump had broken down (and has been replaced). now i only have to replace the LH lower ball joint. hopefully that's not a major job to do.

no pics yet, will do asap.

After buying this jewel for $500 two months ago and many obstacles in between I finally made the trip to NC and picked up my 94 Capri NA automatic. Between that and the Magenta color makes this a one of kind.

Fantastic deal, if it was a manual, you'd had a fight over it and I'm closer.

Working the bugs out of the 94. Replaced the brake master cylinder and bled the system out with new fluid. I also replaced the trunk strong arms that were wore out. I'm currently replacing the leaking flange gasket on the back of the catalytic converter. The nuts are rusted away. I got one off and the second one is so distorted I'll have to resort to their means today. Put new wiper blades on and stole the antenna trim piece off my 91. :)

That'll about wrap it up for this car. The only other things it needs is new tires and I see the strut bumpers are disintegrating. It's ashame it has new tires on it but they are dry rotting.

This car is 10x better performing and more fun than my 91. It makes me want to find a 94 turbo.

The trunk has never been touched on this car. I'll take a picture of the jack area today and post it. It looks spotless down there.

Driving around in my 91 I noticed my volt meter dropping and an occasional belt squeal. I pulled over to inspect and found the bottom alternator bolt backed out and the head was rubbing against the belt, lol. I guess I didn't tighten that bolt a year and a half ago. The belt was down to a string. I saw online Advance had one in stock so I made the 9 mile dash for it hoping the battery would hold up. The car quit pulling into the parking lot. I coasted into the first spot. I bought a brand new Dayco and 30 minutes later plus a jump I was back in business. :)

I made sure this time both bolts were tight. I left it idling the two hours while I was in Wal-Mart buying a whole bunch of nothing and drueling over the few hot women. Now I'll carry a spare V-belt with me.

The 94 the headliner is dropping so I bought some spray headliner glue. The 91 I noticed the right drive axle clicking in turns so I bought that part as well. I used my Advance discount and Speed Perks and got them parts at half price. I think the new axle was $35. Not bad. I'm debating whether to buy bearings and seals or just go for the quick fix. Anyways I have a couple projects in the near future. Oh yeah, the 94 is getting new rubber very soon because the old new tires on it are dry rotted. I'm pleased with the Douglas Performance GTs I bought at Wally World last time so that's what'll she get. I'm amazed how much better the 94 runs compared to the 91 so I'll break down and buy the injectors I've been needing. That's another story.

Took my spare valve cover and wetsanded and buffed the ribs and flats. I worked them from 120 grit to 3000 dual action, then finished off with metal polish. Next I taped off the polished top surfaces and hit it with high temp ceramic engine paint, and a little red caliper paint for the lettering. Then into a 200 degree oven to flash.

Throw on a $5 Rock Auto Fel-Pro gasket and bargain priced NGK Iridium IX plugs, Napa Premium 7mm wires  and a new cap and rotor and no more embarrassment when we open the hood.

I think they should have been made this way originally, since this is how the valve cover on my 1986 Escort GT looked, not to mention all those Cobra valve covers for Mustangs, etc...

That does look really good !   Had mine sandblasted, 2 coats of hi temp clear Imron, red caliper paint in 1 upper and 1 lower rib as well as lettering. Looks like it was powdercoated !
Since I couldn't get my exhaust shield off, bolts rounded, I sanded it down and brushed  it with hi temp bbq grill paint , 3 coats. Not flat and not quite satin-e finish, doesn't stand out like a sore thumb in there and detract from the better looking stuff in there !  Does take a couple days to totally burn off the paint smell, but well worth it !
I don't have turbo but if I did I would paint ( or polish) the tube too. Saw a couple pics out there and it really is good looking.
Again, good job !

I replaced my tires and wheels.  I went with P205/45 R16 BFGoodrich G-Force Sport Comp-2 tires and American Racing AR95 Estrella wheels, both from Tirerack.  I had them mounted and balanced before they were shipped.  They came with new lug nuts and centering rings.  Easy to install.  I have the 1994 NA wheels and tires up for sale if anyone is close to The Palace of Auburn Hills and wants some winter wheels.  I also have the KYB struts and lowering springs on the car.  I think the profile finally looks good!

Here are before and after pictures.

Ooh, that looks really good! I really like the way lowering looks as well, but I personally don't want to lower mine since I drive mine year round, in some pretty good lake effect snow.

However, I bet the handling is way better with the stiffer springs, which I wouldn't mind improving as well.

Chrome wheels look so good on a red car! I hope you don't get them near salt though,  chrome just pits so bad. I hung on to the 94 N/A alloys I pulled from the car I scrapped just for snow tires.

Anyway, thanks for posting, it's nice to see all the other Capris, and yours is beautiful.

Thank you.  Yes, the handling feels great.  The tire/wheel upgrade really improved the feel.  When I lowered it last summer, I felt as if the front would bounce a lot over certain bumps, almost like it was a phase/resonance thing.  Since I put on the new tires and wheels, it has gone away.  The car feels very solid.  I don't drive it in the winter so I don't have to worry about salt on the wheels.

Kudos to you for driving your car year round and keeping it looking so good!

Hey Pappy, As far as posting pix goes, it isn't as easy as one would like, but not to hard if you have another image hosting account like photobucket. I used my snapfish account (where I usually store pix for sending to the local drugstore for printing) all you have to do is highlight a picture there, and right click on it and get the URL into your clipboard (copy) then switch to TeamCapri and pick the left button, 2nd row and paste where the cursor is (between the brackets). That's how you can post a pic.

Anyway, hope you feel better soon.

Disassembled the cooling system a piece at a time and flushed or drilled out everything that had been stopped up by the PO using who knows how much radiator sealant.  This is the first time it's idled properly since I bought it.  Well, at least the IAC is working, idle still got to be worked on.

If you had the door apart before, it's not much harder. Take the interior panels off, and use a 10mm socket ( 1/4"drive is best) on the front and back of the handle. Then there are two plastic clips, if my memory is correct. After all is detached, it is a little tricky to twist the assembly the rest of the way out. Getting the actuator rod clip back on is the hardest job. I have no further tips on it just persevere.

The past 2 weekends I have replaced the cooling system and the front suspension. The cooling system I replaced the radiator with an all aluminum, replaced all the hoses, and the thermostat.  I replaced the water pump and front freeze plugs a few months back.  The front suspension I replaced the front rotors and bearings, front struts, cv axles, ball joints, and control arm bushings.  Drives much better now. Would like to install front and rear sway bars and a strut tower brace.

Over Labor Day weekend I towed my disassembled Capri 400 miles down to where I used to live, held a build party with a bunch of friends to get the new turbo on and the car back together, got everything retuned and then drove it back 400 miles. So it went from missing a goodly part of the engine (including several studs on the exhaust manifold and turbo downpipe) as well as the front bumper and some other assorted nasty to being a functioning car again in no time!

From this: http://imgur.com/a/dCD30
To this: http://i.imgur.com/vhAYZ4w.jpg
Oh, and my Nissan buddies let me hang out with them too: http://i.imgur.com/8xVOFom.jpg

What was great to me was that the car's actually been sitting in disrepair in my driveway since May... yet the only lasting damage is failing clearcoat on the plastic rear bumper. The moment we had the engine together and hooked the battery back up it fired up without a single problem and purred. Mazda sure does make a great motor!

Next up is replacing wheel bearings, fixing the headlight motors (or rather, just the passenger side motor), and repairing the bulb sockets for the front 'driving lights' that finally failed. I think that'll do it until I can get my hands on a strut bar brace and new intake and exhaust!

New here and not my Capri but my aunt's 91 XR2 in of course red. I've been knocking out a bunch of little stuff on it in my garage over the past few weeks....

wash/clay/buff/wax to get the oxidation off the red paint (again!)
put some stuff to help rejuvinate the soft top, looks better but should be replaced
blacked out the gray trim that runs around the belt line of the car so it pops against the red body
re-wired the headlights with a built by me relay harness with 4 relays and it's own fuse block
replaced the headlights with Hella H4 conversion housings
repaired the headlight switch so it actually works every time
reconditioned the D/S headlight motor so it works correctly (thanks to info here!)
repaired the pass side power lock pivot and stuck lock cylinder
replacing the water damaged OEM front speakers with something less water damage prone (cheap kenwoods)
painted the headlight bezels satin black (plastic was oxidized)
painted the side mirrors satin black (grabbed the wrong rag and wiped one with acetone!)
replaced the front marker bulbs with some small warm white LED's that I had to glue in because the sockets have gone rotten
added a trunk light that actually lights the trunk (8W COB LED strip)
replaced the trunk lifts
replaced the burnt out headlight switch illumination bulb with a 5mm green LED (had to sharpie the nose to dim it down some)

I'm probably forgetting something, kinda cheating as this has been over the past few weeks not a day but still...post worthy.

Picked up a new one in Long Island, NY.  Two owners from new, certified 60K, loaded, includes window sheet, maintenance records, white ZR2.  The jack is still shiny.  Has some of the normal old Capri problems, but most things still work  Got home at 1:00AM, pics to follow.

Well not today but yesterday I bought a 1994 with 88,000 miles on it! Oh did I mention it's a XR2😮. It's in good shape with a matching hard top. The real question is what is worth?

I spent all of Saturday installing the o-ring in the water bypass pipe which connects into the side of the water pump - it is a major leak when the o-ring fails (it was hard and crispy with bits crumbling) - I did manage to do this without removing the exhaust manifold - I could just reach in to get a new O-ring (which are hard to find by the way) on the end of the pipe - that did mean removal of various things at the distributor end of the engine....the fun was putting it all back together without any bits leftover...haha

So far successful - no leaks from a couple of test runs -weather was not good enough for a road test yet so we will see how we go......

Oh - I also removed the A/C compressor as the system is not working and don't need it on this one - I do want to swap it on a 93 model (from the 91 model) - does anyone know off hand if the compressors are the same (i.e plug n play)? - haven't had a chance to look at the 93 one yet (it has a compressor leak).

Friday night I stopped by the fabric store and picked up $20 worth of headliner material for the hard top. Saturday I removed the headliner, tore the fabric off of the fiberboard, scrubbed what was left of the foam off and patched it a few places with fiberglass. Then I went out in the garage and took the sawsall to the car...

Not to worry - I just cut the 4x6 speakers out and put in some 3way 40 OZ magnet 6x9's. Now I can probably hear the tunes with the top down. Only problem is that I won't have the top down for a while.

Today I washed the chrome wheels and put the summer tires, wheels on the rack - slapped the snows with stock 94 5 spokers on since it snowed 3 inched today. Finished gluing and reinstalling the new headliner and put the hardtop on for the long winter slop.

Thinking about taking the car to the mechanic. My two attempts (in the last 3 weeks) at replacing the oil pan gasket and front crank seal have not succeeded. Either I need a repair sleeve, or it's the oil pump gasket. Boy it leaks about a quart in 1000 mi!

Replaced the stock 14" wheels and 185/65 tires with a set of 15" Kia wheels I found off Craig's List.  Tires are 195/60s, new black acorn lug nuts, left the black Kia center caps on (didn't look right without them).  Very little clearance on the back under the spring perches, but hey, if it clears by a mm, it clears by a mile!

This was the first time I went to use my small jack on the car since the H&R springs were installed, and low and behold, it wouldn't fit under the car from the side, lol!  So I turned the front wheels all the way to one side, and that gave me enough room to slide the jack underneath to reach the frame.  The rear wheels went up just fine.  Results look pretty decent, took away some of the fenderwell gap, and filled out the space more.  Has a good stance now!

Went for a 5 hour test drive from the ACT to NSW after getting the turbo version of the B6 installed in my 94 SE Capri.

5 hours just flew by, ony stopped once for 98 octane petrol. Driving the country roads with stock turbo is a nice upgrade from non turbo... no one overtook me the whole trip... one guy tried to match pace on windy mountain roads except I blew him off every set of bends with smooth gear changes and nice boost :)

I'm loving the new turbo motor, can't wait to tweak it a bit more

Just installed a boost gauge in my clubsprint replica turbo - now I know the dashboard gauge is probably not quite accurate and understating the amount of boost - 9psi on SAAS gauge to 6psi on dashboard - that is great news though as I have some spare adjustment on the boost controller.

Not many places to install the gauge without major work - so for now I have hung it off the bottom screw which holds the radio/storage box fascia - just enough tube to reach from the connection on the manifold (thanks Ford/Mazda for providing a spare connection - as well as a spare hole in the firewall - no drilling - yay...!!

I just purchased a tk105B GPS GPRS tracker alarm today for $55 USD...

Can do the following
  • Wire in a remote door immobiliser and use a remote to open / lock doors
  • Wire into aux battery
  • Set up a GPS / GPRS antenna to track car and send sms tracking to my tablet to open in google maps / earth.
  • Download Android software to get my tablet and Tracker to talk to each other... can send sms commands to do car stuff like, turn on / off alarm, GPS tracking, lock doors, microwave sensor.
  • Add microwave sensor to have audible alarm / alert to tablet for when car is parked topless
  • Add a switchable key operated, independent power supply siren for audible / silent alarm
  • Add a permanent GPS / GPRS antenna on the boot... small slim round black disc.... kinda like a small hockey puck
  • Add a RFID immobiliser to require a RFID tag to start ignition with key

Not bad for $55 for base unit, $35 for Rfid, $35 for GPS GPRS antenna, $25 for microwave sensor, $35 for lockable switch siren with own power supply.

That sounds like quite the security system.

Got an alignment, fixed the rear sway bar bushing bracket, and installed a pair of shifter bushings.  Had the front adjusted to toe out with toe in at the rear.  Oddly it still pulls to the right.  Don't like that, other than that, it's like a different car.  Driving and shifting are great.  Sway bar bushings are next.

Time for a new battery today as the old one wont hold charge for very long - this time the correct one (someone had put one in with posts on wrong side so battery was wrong way around and also half-width posts for not enough contact).  also a new K&N filter to try out for a bit of track time.

Finally finished reassembling the car on Saturday, fired it up for the first time in months...only to find that the custom braided oil feed line I'd had made for the turbo was leaking through the swivel joint. Have to go get the line replaced next Saturday, which means another week with no Capri and having to reassmble the car yet again.

Sigh. So close yet so far.  :-\

I've now had my Capri for just over one month (June 2nd).  Started with oil/filter change, since it looked like old oil had 10K Miles or more, and was black.  Replaced trunk lift struts.  Next was examination of dropped shifter and linkage.  Linkage had been "fixed" with long sheet metal screw which had pulled out of the top plate.   Replace screw with nut/bolt/washer/Loktite combination.  Installed new bushings in shifter linkage.  Noticed grease leaking out of passenger side CV boot, which was torn.  Replaced axle, but found that tie rod ends and ball joints had torn boots, so I replaced those.  Set preliminary alignment using tape measure and saw guide on Sat July 1st, but was concerned over tie rod ends being different lengths.  Steering wheel was off by some 80 degrees counterclockwise.  Driver side tie rod end was almost all out, while passenger side was almost all in.  Had alignment done yesterday.  Car seems to want to wander a bit, so I'll road test some more.  Today was supposed to be a trip to a friend's lakeside house for 4th of July Party, provided the rain holds off.  My body is cut and bruised from fighting rusty nuts and bolts, so a day of rest is in order.  Was glad to have the Capri buttoned up, since the flex plate on my Focus broke on Friday night (June 30th), and it will be out of commission for a while.

Wow, that was quite a day.  On your wandering, my recently purchased XR2 pulled to the left cruising down a straight road.  Had it aligned and it didn't change.  They said it might be the tires and we could rotate them and see if there was a difference.  The tires were old and displayed some cracking, so I bought a new set.  Now it pulls to the right, oh well.

When I replaced my front end I done a string wheel alignment. I use to use a tape but found this method much easier and more accurate. There are several how to videos on YouTube. I was pleased enough I didn't take it to a shop. If yours is wandering it's either in the worn unevenly tires or the shop messed up.

A couple tricks... put cardboard under the tires to ease toe movement. Tie one end of the string to the front bumper and on the other end of the string tie it to a bungee cord and then hook it to the foglight area. If I remember correctly I left about a 3/32 gap on the backside of the front tires.

I know you had your shop alignment but you can check the mechanic's work. Even the best make mistakes. Bad tires will mess up an alignment too.

My brakes on my turbo capri are really bad - mushy pedal - no joy in taking it to the mechanic (I have a feeling I have been ripped off last year..!!!).  I have bled them a number of times but cant seem to get the air out fully on front left especially.  Anyway - I had a mobile brake specialist come today and have a look - absolutely brilliant to have an old school guy looking at the problems - nice to see what they are doing and ask questions (not like the shop who will just say it will be $500 thanks).  After testing and isolating each brake line (clamp on each line and release when pushing pedal to check pressure - hadn't seen this done before) to check what  is causing the mushy pedal it seems to be front left caliper in particular - He will be back with rebuilt front calipers...hopefully that will do the trick.....rears seem to be OK.

Nice to have a good pedal again isn't it? I had a rear do that and it also made quite a difference. I imagine a front lost makes for scary stops! Losing a rear only seemed to make the pedal wimpy and make the e-brake fail to hold on sloped driveways.

Had my alignment done last Monday (July 3rd).  I kick myself for not thinking more clearly.  I knew the tie rod ends were somewhat different, since one had zerk grease fitting and one didn't.   On one side, the tie rod end was screwed all the way in, and on the other it was almost all out.  I should have reversed them to see what would happen before taking Ozzy for alignment.

On the issue of tires as the cause of pulling left or right, a simple check is to switch left to right, and see what effect that has.  If it pulls in the other direction, you know the tires are mismatched.

Installed the K&N panel filter and built a cold air intake to help improve air flow. I cut a 3" round hole in the center of the bottom of the air box, pushed an ABS fitting through it and a 3" diameter 14" thin wall PVC pipe, put a 3" diameter street elbow on it and put some screws in to hold the elbow and pipe to the fitting. Lastly, I put two notches in the street elbow flange at two O'clock and 10 O'clock so that it snaps onto the plastic lower ferring by tipping the top of the pipe to vertical and into the ABS fitting. Some thinner to soften the PVC and flat black spray paint to finish it off..

The intake peeks out just inboard of the sway bar crook and passes straight up into the air box. I kept it no lower than the sway bar crook, you'll see it as the dark half circle protruding from the underside in the center of the picture... I kept the small fender snorkel in place so a deep puddle doesn't suck water from below.
(https://s2.postimg.org/z5t91ljyh/image.jpg) I just went straight down with the pipe because there is nothing below the air box. The only negative is that now you can hear the bypass valve fart just a bit.

Today I liberated the turbo from the engine bay with the help of a friend. What a pain. At least now I can get that sent out for a rebuild while we plan the full build that will happen sometime next year.

Also went over the entire car for bits that need replacing, it's quite an extensive list. Turns out letting a car sit in a field for ten years really doesn't do it any favours :P

Tried to mount my new wheels, 15X6.5 38mm backspace Maxim Maze.  Had to get special lugs, no big deal.  Tried to mount 205/60-15 and they rub the struts.  Going to be using Uniroyal Tiger Paw 195/55-15 in a day or to when they come in.

Last Saturday I drove my Capri 50 miles to meet up with college friends and play golf.  The golf bag fit perfectly in the trunk.  I was doing 85-90 on the highway without a problem.  After golf and dinner I drove back in the dark with the top down and crossed over Woodward Ave. on the way home.  People are already out cruising on Woodward ahead of the Woodward Cruise on the 19th.  The car drove like a champ.

Oh I'm fine I still have the door opener itself. What I mean is when I took the door panel off the rod that connects the movement from the pull to the mechanism inside the door fell out of its spot. It's nearly impossible to see where the whole is to stick it back In.

New wheel bearing on front left side (passenger side in Oz) - had to source a new hub as the original was very worn and out of shape - these appear to be very hard to find - I luckily found a pair of front suspension towers with hubs/brakes, etc.  - plenty of spares for the future.  I had a mobile mechanic fit the parts (and press the bearing in place) which was great - good to watch what work is going on  - have been screwed at various mechanics around town so nice to find a good mechanic for a change.  He also fixed my brakes previously after a couple of go's at various mechanics.......

Replacing the fuel tank. The old one was rust free EXCEPT for the vent tube at the top. Totally rusted away. Ordered a new Dorman brand tank for the 323. Also replacing the fuel pump and strainer since I am in there.

The old tank was super clean inside, no signs of rust or debris.

I'm giving the underbody and inside the frame rails another coat of Fluidfilm, going to do the tank before I install it.

Today I repaired my shifter linkage using bronze bushings (see my post under Non Capri parts). What a great improvement!!!

Also my car has Hella H4 headlights and I have not been impressed with nighttime illumination. Today I installed a headlight relay harness to hopefully improve brightness of the headlights. Those relay kits take the load from the headlight switch and provide a better ground. I will see if the upgrade makes a noticable difference when driving home from the cruise night tomorrow.

Tomorrow it's supposed to be 79 degrees here. First cruise night of the season in Wauseon Ohio. It's a bit of a drive, but planning on going.

(Not actually today, Thursday)
Sold her to another Capri enthusiast who has 2 other ones. It's been a fun but exhausting experiment - to set up a Capri XR2 for show and use it for my daily driver all year 50 miles a day, despite rain, snow, sleet, ice, white-outs, fog, deer, and SUVs and semis.

We entered 9 shows together in the last 4 years and came away with 5 trophys (1 best of show) and made it to and from work 25 miles each way every work day except 1 (broken clutch cable 23 miles from home.)

The only problem became the unreliability of the 27 year old turbocharged car and the difficulty to get parts or find anyone who could work on it. But slowly another insidious problem began to arise. In the end it was always on my mind, always requiring my attention and I found myself becoming obsessed with it, sometimes finding my worth in it.

Just imagine wearing clothes, say a suit that is so outrageous that everyone stares at you or turns to look when you go by. Now imagine wearing that outfit everywhere you go, to the store, to church, to a wedding, to a funeral, to buy something on Craigslist, to deliver meals on wheels on the poor side of town, and so on... After a while it dawns on you, this suit has become a symbol of me and I don't like what it says anymore. It draws too much attention to me, and keeping it perfect is way too much of a chore, can't have a wrinkle, no spots.

Now I know that most, maybe all of you wont feel the same way about the analogy above and for good reasons. Most of you don't worry and labor weekend after weekend to keep your suit (or Capri if you haven't seen through the analogy yet) perfect, waxed, scuff free in summer heat and winter blizzards, all the time wondering if everyone around is noticing you, but that's where I found myself, so I came to the conclusion that the XR2 had to go - there was too much of me in it to separate us, so she had to go.

It's been wonderful attending Capri Gatherings with you all and meeting a bunch of you, and the help on this forum has been priceless. Thank you so much for all your help, kind words of encouragement and friendship. I sincerely hope someone steps up and rescues you all from the one part supplier left on the internet who seems to know that he or she has cornered the market. But for the moment, I'm enjoying the relief of finding Focus parts much more readily and not needing to look as often (I hope).

Now I drive an average 07 Focus ZX3 stick which has enough zip to be fun to drive, but isn't much to look at (kinda like comfortable jeans) and seems fairly reliable.

May you enjoy your Capris and keep it all in perspective.

Well, now that the snow will hopefully stay away, I've been driving the 92 XR2 daily. Over the winter I've wanted to do a few things to it like fit the VJ11/Tbird hybrid with the FMIC I have sitting around, but with this new house and it's lovely quirks, the propane fill bill has it's fangs firmly in my neck.

Anywho, I've replaced the distributor cap and rotor, thermostat, added grounds, replaced LF strut mount, flushed the cooling system, brake pads all around, rebuilt the rear left caliper.

The bearing for the parking brake mechanism had failed, and caused it to stick out of alignment upon cable engagement. That damn bearing came straight from Mazda for $40 with shipping. Whole lot of fun getting that rusty thing apart, and them needles were damn near paste.

Here's what's lame: The flush didn't do a damn thing for my overheating. I found that the thermostat I had ignored when I did the head gasket and all the seals on the head was backwards in the housing, according to the FSM. So I replaced it while doing the flush with a prestone flush additive, to no effect. Ran that with distilled water for a couple days for deep clean, to no avail. probably a clogged heater core or radiator, so a back flush is the next order of business before replacing those. Good times.

I replaced the dimmer switch with the one from my parts car due to a stupid mistake involving a boost controller tapped into a source voltage in the center console, which also did nothing. Still no dash illumination. learned of a resistor pack of sorts that sits behind the cluster that apparently is the culprit, unless I've missed a fusible link in my study of that circuit. Does anybody have a visual description of that module they could post below?

Still having alternator issues. When my OE 70 amp unit shit the bed, I swapped in the 85 amp unit, harness, and mounting bolt from my parts car. That lasted 6 months, and replaced it again with an Oreilly Remanufactured unit. Lasted another 6 months. Once more replaced, and it's failed once again. All of the fuses appear fine, and I've cleaned every ground on this car. Voltage regulator, every time. I even used proper belt deflection on the last two. What gives? Thinking of switching back to the 70 amp unit if I can't find the source of the repeat failures. Any insight on this would be welcomed.

Getting my list together for winter projects, one of which is a bit of bodywork, replacing the headliner, new soft top, bottom end gaskets, Clutch (maybe), fabricating an air dam/valence, venting my spare hood and re-gooping the framework for the hood to the skin, maybe fit better tires than the already-separating and vibrating General Altimax tires on there.

I discovered there's no current running to the lighting dimmer switch and tried to remove that control module it's connected to. Problem is that it's connected to something else somewhere... the fuse box maybe??

My clutch slave cylinder died on me in the middle of traffic the other day. After she was towed home, I decided to replace both the master and slave as long as I had to be working on the clutch hydraulics, and compared to my old Fiat X1/9, this repair was a walk in the park

I only had to remove the battery, wiper motor, and splash guards. The X1/9 needed the steering column, driver seat, pedal assembly, exterior vents, wiper motor, and center console to come out before you would even have enough room to get a flare wrench near the master cylinder

I still need to get around to replacing my valve cover gasket, but it's such a small leak that I keep putting it off

If you're using hella ECE H4 units and not impressed then there's something wrong with your bulbs or wiring. Did you swap the wires around to the standard h4 bulb requirements? I've been using Hella h4s since 1988 in my Escort, Accord, pathfinder, and Jeeps and I've never been dissatisfied.

Just bolted this up lower chin spolier up today, along with tinting the original Hella fog lamps with yellow film and a heat gun. I took some measurements of my Capri XR2 I bought a few weeks ago and the 90-99 SW20 Toyota MR2 and found that their (the two cars) front chin spoilers basically bolt up, with only needing to be trimmed about 2 inches on either side of the vehicle, where it meets the fender wheel well. For those wondering, it is what was known as "CX Style", if you were searching for it online. Not sure if this is “old hat” knowledge, but I thought I’d pass it on, since it provides more cooling and perhaps a bit more down force. Aesthetically, it looks MADE for the car. I plan on painting the top half of it to match the car and the weathered black bumper trim to make it more blended in the coming weeks. As you can see it "blends" nicely with the lines of the fog lights and almost could have been a factory option it fits with so little modification.

John

Guys,  it's on Ebay for 99.99 shipped to the lower 48 or I would not have bought it. I'd like to see the one that is 270, but it'd better be an original CX for that kinda money in my opinion. One of the most appealing parts of doing this mod is that it's a reasonable piece. Let me know if you want the Ebay link or the seller and I can message you with it, as I wasn't sure what the policy is on posting links to for sale items that weren't recognized vendors being new to the site. All that being said, I have more surprises up my sleeve that would involve using another famous japanese car's front bumper that will substantially update the front end of our cars this winter since I plan on either respraying my XR2 Cardinal OR Ferrari Rosso Red in the spring. Much more to come. Next on my list is grafting/welding in a Porsche Boxster 4pt roll bar like I did with the RX7 FC3S LS1 'vert I swapped a few years ago. I have already sourced and bought it, since I had my FC3S RX7 to measure and it's very close. I will also be modifying a Kamimari roadster top, I recently bought to work with it, although it'll render the rear seat pretty much useless.....but it pretty much is anyway. Anyway, thanks for the feedback. Time to help breathe some life back into this forum.

Well, I should say the Tokico HP "Blues" from the BF-323. I found them on Ebay as NOS with a seller named ShopEddies. I paid a premium for them and bought them as single Buy It Now auctions but it was worth it. They are the "fire orange" color I've seen on pics of 323's, instead of the regular Blue HP. I picked up new KYB strut mounts as well from Rock Auto. Right place at the right time I guess. I will post pics of them when I get ready to mount them. Need to pick up some camber bolts. Was trying to locate some Cusco pillow ball mounts for the BF, but they are in Japan if available at all. I have a set of front pillow ball mounts I am looking to adapt from my 2ZZ Celica....perhaps.

Hi Jack,

They are the screened decals and were EZ PZ to do. I would just stress to make sure they were put on straight. I used my heat gun a bit for even better fit and finish. Sounds good about a mini "mini" meet. We have a "Cars N' Coffee" meet as well in Asheville every 2nd Saturday. It would be cool to show up with a few XR2's. Any or all of that I would be up for....

Could also take a drive somewhere that the road gets twisty....Was going to go up to the Dragon's Tail this fall, but I've been doing so much maintenance along with a swap into another car, that Iv'e lost track of time it seems. I'd be up for any or all of that. Perhaps we can coax others.

There has been talk of an NC meet for a while now and was hoping others might take notice.  Asheville is a little west, but Festiva Madness has people coming from Arizona.  Anybody interested?

The Festiva guys are really active and there were over 50 cars there.  Florida, Missouri, and Maine were the long distance guys this time.  John Glenn was there, he's a combination guy.  That was the reason I was talking to them about a combination meet.

I like that idea.....I'd be open to meeting up with any and ALL that help keep this platform alive.

On another note, I am starting to put together my Ground Control Coilovers I sourced recently with the NOS Tokico HP's I was lucky enough to find on Ebay recently. I'm starting by grinding off the strut collar, so that I can use Heavy Duty shaft collars to anchor the adjustable collar. Pics to come, as this can be done with just about any application and provides an honest to God REAL coilover option for us. I also want to take my OEM struts and find Koni Yellow inserts to have valved for our cars as a solution in the coming months.

I wouldn't mind an occasional track day, at Road Atlanta, after I finish installing the Ground Controls and some new A-Arm bushings and overhaul/upgrade the brakes this winter. I know that I at least, want to take it to Road Atlanta, for the Walter Mitty Classic and do some touring laps. Overall, I just want to tastefully add to the safety and aesthetics of the car and the seats/Porsche 986 4pt roll bar should accomplish that. All, will of course, be reversible.  8)

Paintless dent repair is a skill and art.  It takes a lot of practice and some expensive tools.  I've tried it myself with minimal success.  You can get the tools off eBay, but they are expensive.  You also need some movable lighting.  I haven't checked, but I'll bet there are videos on YouTube.  For a couple of dents, you're gonna want to contact someone local that does it.  Google it or check around at used car lots.  They are the major customers for the service.  Good luck.

I forgot to post last week, while in for the meet last weekend, I managed to get a defroster switch from a FB member.  The face is separated, but I guess a little glue will fix that.  I was going to also get the relay which I thought was located near the fuel pump switch, but it wasn't there. Rockauto has one for $15.  Also got the lighted rear view mirror the guy had for sale the other day.  Now if it ever gets warm.....

Had a 2 1/4" cat back exhaust and a turbo muffler installed.  Sounds really good, deep throaty and really changed the personality of the car.  The boost seems to build quicker and seems to get a little more boost.  Hope to be able to try it out more in a couple of days.

Hey Jack....send me a messenger please with a video so I can hear how it sounds.  I had my 92 up on a rack at the shop last week to start figuring out the new exhaust.  Found someone had already put in a performance cat and 2 1/4" mid pipe back to the muffler.  Muffler is small with 2" input and 1 3/4" output.  The tailpipe is rusted off.  That accounts for the 92 being a lot spunkier than the 94 that has factory exhaust.  The shop I was at did not want to bend a new tailpipe, so I am still in search of a shop here that will.

MOCK UP (these are just cut outs at the moment, as I am waiting for the lights to get here) of new tail light idea 💡 for the Capri. Uses black out tail light covers and LED’s. I am creating molded housings for each with perforated mesh ~ ala Ferrari F355 tail lights as a template.  Rear spoiler will compliment them but is getting the "Millen" treatment at the moment. 8)

Reminds me a lot of the Clubsprint lights. Russ had done a molded prototype years ago that took Vette circular lights if I am remembering right.
Do you have any plans for reverse lights? Are they built into the LED panels?

Ok , so these are REALLY not even roughed in yet. Those are color print outs, to scale of the lights I bought. They get here from overseas this week and are brand new. This version utilizes the GTS smoked tail light covers and will be built as such that you could "reverse" it without harming the 91-93 tails. The lights will be in housings that resemble the Ferrari 458 tails (though not as deep as in the pic) since there is a slight angle on ours, that I would need to account for so that they face vertical instead of tilted. I will also either incorporate a reverse light between the circular lights that is rectangular like the R32 Skyline lights OR I have an LED that is dual function as a 3rd Brake light AND a reverse light that attaches to the top bolts of the license tag bracket. OR I will delete the stock 3rd brake light and glass an LED bar into the new rear spoiler that I am fabbing for it that is reminiscent of the Millen one from years ago. ALSO, I plan on painting/tinting the outside bezels of the first lights so that they will still look metal but will blend into the tinted GTS tail light covers better. I think this would also be the easiest one for someone to replicate that doesn't have a lot of skill working with cat hair/long strand fiberglass.

Ferrari 458 housings idea
(https://i.ibb.co/s1JWQqX/458.jpg)

I am also making a pair that requires some fiberglass work and uses the Depot 300ZX "Ferrari" Tail lights. with a donor set of 91 stock tails for the housings. They would have LED star bulbs in them as the MAIN reason I am doing this is function. Form matters but is secondary since our tails are woefully "underlit" even with adding the second brake light bulb to the inner housing.

I have done this mesh "3D" surround on my RX7 if I can find some pics

Last, I want to try a 3 light "sequential set utilizing Dakota Digital LED tail lights for a 62 Impala and not use the chrome bezels.

Decided to try a different mirror option I've been eyeballin' for a while, that I thought carries the lines of our car and are a lot more aero, so I "mocked up" these this past weekend. The match the 90's "angled" look of the rest of the bodywork much better than some of the "M3" type aftermarket mirrors I have seen. So, the donor car is the 84-89 Starion/Conquest ~ Starquest and is a factory remote and heated mirror. It's an easy modification to make it fit our cars and can be done with a Dremel, a new carriage bolt, a couple nuts and 3-4 fender washers per side and some good JB weld to position the bolts, washers and nuts for an oem fit that won't ever budge. Obviously, I will shoot the mirror red after I get everything smooth and snugged up.

The last pic is of my 2JZ swapped SHP "Starquest". I have a spare parts bin that it came from. Helps to see it in red I think. Now for the passenger side mirror and the pin out for the remote mirror switch. Haven't decided if I will mess with the heated mirror function yet.

Thanks Jack. I hesitate to stick them on FB pages until they are done for obvious reasons that everyone's a critic these days.  ::) The answer to your question is that the Starion/Conquest was made by Mitsubishi and sold here as the Starion AND Chrysler Conquest from 84-89. They were packed solid with tech and were RWD Turbo cars with a fully independent suspension and Anti-lock brakes in certain years. the 87-89 had an SHP (handling package) that had coilovers, a widebody treatment to the exterior and wider, staggered wheels and are very collectible. Starting to appreciate some and are a great swap car for the 4G63 (from the Talon, Eclipse, EVO) as well the LSx V8 series and the 2JZ from the Supra twin turbo. The stock motor was capable but had it's limits. The LS swap is cool but required more fabrication than I was willing to do. The 2JZ is good for 900hp on the stock bottom end so it's ALL the motor the car will ever need and can be tuned  for track days or a drag strip (the track days are more my speed these days) They are relatively cheap and can be turned into wickedly fast but predictable cars as they were decently engineered for even today's standards. PLUS, no driver aids.....just the way I like it.

First time poster. Today I finally got my Capri running! Started rough but settled in nicely. Went up and down the street to test out transmission a bit and brakes and all seemed okay. Had the car for about 3 weeks, New fuel pump and line filter went in yesterday.   Original oil looks good but it’s sat for a long time, that is being changed next.  Feeling relieved I didn’t buy a paperweight!

Congratulations, welcome and good luck with it.  I was amazed with my first one, an N/A, it would go 3,000 miles without discoloring the oil at all with 165K on the clock.  I'm very impressed with these cars.

So, a few months ago I said I was going to "take one for the team" and order a set of Stainless Steel Brake lines from OZ that were originally intended for the 323 GT, GTX. Pics I could find, verified it was worth a shot and I am happy to say they got here today from OZ. (I actually ordered them on Friday of last week) and they are spot on for fitment. Build quality is excellent as well. If you have yet to replace those tired, old rubber hoses. This is the ticket. Better pedal feel (as in stiffer and better modulation). More reliable and look damn sexy behind a good set of wheels. with some cleaned and painted calipers and a set of aluminum hub centric spacers to give it a little wider stance. I mainly bought them for the function since mine were original and had seen a better day after all those years. If you want to know where I bought em. PM me.

At 85,000 miles it has a ways to go before it is used up (I hope)

Finally got around to pulling the Capri in the shop yesterday and took a picture of it while I try to fix the doors and windows. When I bought the car last month the doors did not open from the inside or the outside and the only way to get inside it was to climb over the trunk. I managed to get the passenger door open first by using a large pry bar and pulling on the outside door handle and it was just enough to pop it open. in the process though I broke the outside door handle. Inside door handle was a simple fix once I got the door open. The latch rod to the handle had come off. It was the same way on the drivers door but it had been hit in that side and the door and quarter panel is damaged along with the inside door frame and other areas I could not see before because of the door not opening. A lot of bodywork to do!!  Anyways, Tuesday I plan to do more work on it. Uploaded pictures of my Capri and my Ranchero which is still in NJ at my other home. I hope to bring it down to GA this year so I can finish the restoration. (http://)https://s1152.photobucket.com/user/Kiatech4400/profile/  I enjoy this site very much its very helpful!! Terry

Today I installed new Gabriel Ultra rear struts. The passenger side had no damping and no gas charge. The driver side was still holding a gas charge.

I was expecting an ordeal with the bolts being rusted as these were the original factory struts. But luckily it all came apart pretty easily. The bolts were still shiny and rust free inside the lower arm bushing and the spindle.

As I always have done, I wipe down the new parts with acetone and then put a couple coats of clear paint on them to keep them looking fresh and shiny. It is a car I show regularly during the summer.

When it finally stops raining I will go for a test drive. I have had a bit of an oscillation jumpy feeling in the rear. I am sure the passenger wheel was doing a little bouncing on the road.

I just emailed Koni this week about finding an insert for us that will allow at least rebound control with a set of their Yellow's in our stock housings. We NEED more options. Gabriel, KYB, Sachs are fine for OEM ride height but that won't do for me. This is my current setup and I was lucky enough to find a full set of NOS Tokico HP's from the 323.

I am still battling electrical demons on my car. Headlight doors seems to have a mind of their own. I can attempt to turn them on and nothing happens then I can let the car sit a day or two and they work fine. I smelled burning wires from inside the center of the dash so on Monday ( May 6, 2019) I will be pulling the whole dash apart to look for the culprit but I have a suspect in mind and that is the radio harness since its been coming on and off a lot on its own. Seriously, I am thinking about building a rear deck to house the battery, custom made fuse box and radio amps all in a neat orderly fashion. I do not use my trunk for anything but keeping tools in since I seem to be fixing my car on a daily basis. lol  Hope everyone had a great weekend!! Terry

I met David Young and acquired my third Capri.  He was super nice and gave me a good deal. It ran like a champ on the way back to NC from PA and I got 29MPG on my first tank and 30MPG on my second.  I'm looking forward to enjoying my new acquisition and continuing my friendship with David. Look for donor car for sale in the near future.  He sold this one because he had no space, now I've got the same problem.

Today I installed the stainless braided brake hoses. I was worried about running into brake fittings at the lines that were rusted and seized.

Luckily I had no problems.

I only took 1 picture as the sky to the west was getting dark and I wanted to complete the job before any rain started. So sick of all the rain this season.

Some more new hoses that actually are from a silicon set of hoses I bought for the long heater hose in the back of the block. These were extra and just happen to be exactly what was needed to replace more old rubber hoses that are starting to go. Also in the pics is a new (discreet) BOV I have been itching to install. The diaphragm on my stock DV was gone long ago. I like it.

Met up with Jack (Greywolf) this past weekend at the Pick N' Pull and he shared his cache from the XR2 Capri with me which I thought was extremely cool. I scored a set of  slightly damaged tail lights (won't matter) so I don't have to sacrifice my OEM's. Also scored some various interior pieces and a MINT headlight motors that I will be refurbishing and selling with a year warranty if anyone is looking for one that we know. Got a greasy set of wires that I thought were big diameter "knock off's" till I got em home and cleaned them up. MSD Magnecor 8.5 mm wires and RED....Just like my car ;-) Going back this weekend. The second pic, is of a strut bar that I customized for our car this past weekend, that I am considering to reproduce for Capri owners, as an AFFORDABLE strut bar, since I think most have been sold of the stock that Roo-Sport had at one time from what I gather. It's pretty solid and I liked the feel (seat of pants) on the highway the most as I was able to get quite a bit more feedback from the suspension. Provides some much needed stability between the strut towers. THIS is what I did today......

I installed a set of Sparco pedals today and an old Momo "Dead Pedal" that I had lying around....Should provide for some good "Heel-Toe" downshifting if you notice the spacing of the gas and brake pedal is now much closer and the tab on the left of the "go" pedal is even closer which helps facilitate the technique. Keeping steady pressure is the hardest part of heel-toe'ing for me but I am pumped to actually have some decently spaced pedals for a change.

I started cleaning the engine compartment and man is it hot out there.  I used Gunk foamy and liquid squirt bottle.  The liquid squirt bottle works much better than the foamy.  Not much experience doing it this way, normally pull the engine and steam clean it.  Can't bend over long so this will be a long process...lol

Washiestsnake, check the blower motor resistor. They are very prone to corrosion failure and is usually the cause of an inop blower motor.

Has anyone done the 5th gear conversion from Roo-Sport?  I have the kit and I'm thinking about making that the weekend project.  Any advice out there?  Is there a gasket on the tranny end cap?

I have. I suggest using a stout impact wrench as it will make it so much easier and I would presoak both nuts with either PB Blaster or a mix of acetone/antifreeze (actually works better than PB Blaster)

There was a great step by step on 626.net, but it's down it seems right now.

Here's a great YouTube video that basically shows you how to access and change the gears in a g-series. It's from the same family of tranny's. You will need a 27mm and a 32mm socket for the nuts. I suggest buying new pinch nuts if the kit didn't come with them.

Next up on the 92 is under the hood...get rid of the fan belt chirp, new valve cover gasket, new timing belt, shifter bushings, etc. After that a paint job.  It has horrible clear coat scale.  After that, it will be ready to join in all the reindeer games!

The clearcoat has started popping on my red car so I guess I'm gonna have to do something about that.

Got a 2 1/4" exhaust and Cherry Bomb turbo muffler installed on my red car. Has a nice deep sound at idle and low speed, no drone or intrusive volume at cruise and an interesting burble when you rev it at idle.  Pretty cool.

Sounds like the exhaust setup on my 92 xr2 Jack. I'm taking time during this stay at home order to teardown my 2 parts cars. Learning a lot while doing it. It gives me a good feel on how everything is put together. I did the same thing with a 57 chevy when I was 16. Here I am at 68 and still playing!

Scored huge off an 88K car at Winston-Salem Pull-A-Part.  Hubs, spindles, calipers, brake pads, like new from both ends. Axles and intermediate shaft, a Bosch alternator that looks like it just came out of the box. $400 I feel like it was a nice day.  The car still has almost all the turbo stuff still intact and the body is pristine. Other FB members got stuff from it also.

No, except that there didn't seem to be any fluid in the transmission.  It was a really nice car when dumped in there.  Removing stuff was almost like taking it off a new car.  No rusted bolts. A real shame.

Hi all,

Well gee...

...I wasn't nearly so productive as Jack, but yesterday I brought my red '91 out of winter hibernation, checking everything and put fourteen test miles on it. All went well...sorta. I found the clutch sticks in gear once in a while...sigh...

And, instead of checking here first (still new and learning), I ordered two closeout air filters from Rock Auto, then found the discount and closeout reference here.

Cheers all!

Not all today but over the last two;
I tried to replace the O2 sensor which appears to be the OEM one, and stripped the f**** out of it,
then to get more room to get tools on it tried to remove the heat shield on the manifold and broke 3 of its bolts and stripped the last 2.
(My vice grips decided to wind up missing too so that puts that on hold for now)

Then I started to replace my passenger door handles, got the outside one on, but the lock plate(?) is stuck in a weird position where it wont work, and tried to put the inside one on and it broke after 3 openings (I guess the mechanism was too stiff for the plastic?).

All in all a disappointing and frustrating weekend and my car runs even crappier but I guess it was a learning experience for sure  ;D :'(

Today I replaced my oil pressure sending unit. Starting this season the gauge has been jumping all over the place. Super high pressure then almost no pressure. Cleaning the connection did not fix the issue.

I found a suitable replacement for under $130.00: WVE brand 1S6654. WVE is NGK/NTK brand and is made in Japan.

Removing the old sending unit was a tedious job. The starter bracket was removed many years ago so I did not have to deal with it. In order to get room I had to remove the oil filter and cooler. I left the coolant lines attached to the cooler and moved it out of the way. I had to use a 5/8 open end wrench to remove the old sending unit. I removed both the sender and the extension fitting. The new sending unit required a 17mm open end wrench to tighten into the extension fitting. I had to use the old extension fitting with the new sensor otherwise it would hit the knock sensor.  I cleaned all mating surfaces and reinstalled the oil cooler.

The process took about an hour. I did all the work from below. Of course I disconnected the battery.  On cold start the oil pressure reads about 1 1/2 needle width above the max normal line. However after the engine warms up the needle stays a few needle widths below the max normal line and will go to the max normal line when above 1800 rpm. I did a 30 mile drive today and the gauge is working properly now. Checked for oil leaks and all is dry. Hopefully this sending unit will last 28 years like the old one did.

Hi all,

Well, since it is National Collector Car Appreciation Day, see semasan.com for more information, I drove my Capri down the mountain and back for an appointment and some errands. I returned back up the mountain before the temperature hit 100 "down there."

I saw only two other "collector cars" on the road, an Audi R8 and a Maserati GranTurismo, neither of which can go topless like I was.

How about you?

Cheers,

Steve

Well, because I wasn't thinking about it, I gently dusted my Capri with sanding dust from a cabinetmaking project. I should have backed it out of the shop before blocking it in with the project,eh?

It is some dye I got from a company in SC. They do standard colors for European cars and will do custom colors. You would probably need to dye the entire seat. Clean it and sand it with 400, then you can brush or spray for the same results.  Time will tell how long lasting it is. I used it on the SLK seats I put in my white car.

Well I am still going with a head gasket fix - my poor 91 turbo overheated while racing a couple of months ago when the fan belt broke and bent the head  - cylinder head has been repaired (including welding a crack in cylinder 1 exhaust valve part of head) and now the journey continues - water pump, timing belt, new gaskets all round - and cleaning of most things in between....I just have to make a crank bolt tool to remove it so I can get the new belt on....(thanks to this forum as fixing most things would be hard without everyone's knowledge available)......

Greetings friends,

I thought long and hard about taking it out for a spin today, the weather was sunny and mid-thirties...but I didn't....sigh.

I also thought about the stabilizer bar issues that need addressing, one broken bolt in one of the bushing mounts. And, whose has, good, reasonably priced stabilizer bar link kits? I did not see any on Rock Auto.

Maybe I will get it out tomorrow, it's supposed to be warmer...but I wanted to get one drive in during January. Ah, well.

Well, today, I took Jack's advice and went for a drive. It had to be top-up because my "Far Better Half By Far" wanted to go along for the ride. It would otherwise have been just, just warm enough to go topless with gloves, a scarf, and warm coat.

We had a nice drive, a 35 mile round trip to the post office to mail bills. These were the first miles of 2021.

And, Jack, shortly posting some follow-up about stabilizer bar links in the proper parts discussion area.

Howdy all!
My Capri has been "enjoying" itself on winter duty. Here in Ohio we've been getting some snow and ice as of recent, and the old girl has been taking real well to it. Never thought it was possible to drift a Capri until a couple days ago, lots of fun! Honestly a good car to drive in the snow, minus the lack of ABS... :D, but that just adds to the experience.
For anyone wondering, my Capri isn't the prettiest, and is prerusted, so the salt doesn't scare me a whole lot. I just wash it really good after winter is over to get rid of the road salt, and she looks as good as a rusted Capri can be!

A set of seat rails to replace mine which are looking the worse for wear.

Managed to get my fuel pump cleaned and looking like a real fuel pump. Also got most of the twenty year old gas out of the tank. It had a full tank by the way.

Resuscitated my second Capri. Sitting for 20 years and with a little support from Paul Short and $200 in parts, she lives.

Awesome!

I got a pile of parts delivered from Rockauto. Still awaiting on another box from RA and a package or two from Amazon. Rotors, pads, brake hoses, wheel bearings, seals.
Not sure if I'm going to pad-slap it yet and try to see if the old rotors clean up or if I will dig in and do the wheel bearings.

If I do end up doing the rotors/ bearings I'll film it and stick a proper video on the youtube on how it's done. What with the stupid captured rotor design, it messes with a lot of people

Excellent, I'm getting charged up to do the same. Hoping my rusty 13K rotors will clean up. I'm hoping  my bearings will also be okay. Gonna put on new calipers and trying to find some braided brake hoses.

What, pray tell, is the infamous shifter drop? I guess I'm still a rookie when it comes to the Capri. Whatever it is, it sure doesn't sound like a fun time....

Some brittle plastic clips break and the shifter falls thru the floor until it is riding on top of the exhaust. Happens to every manual Capri at some point or another

Got my '93 running the other day. Was going to start it today and work on the idle and it broke the timing belt. One step forward and two steps back.

Bummer! At least you have your work cut out for you. Timing belt is on the list for my 94.

Speaking of, I found time to put new brake pads & hardware on the fronts for my 94. The calipers were in poor shape, I've free'd up the slides and put some new rubbers on, at least on the passenger side. Time has been extremely short lately

Of course I was planning on replacing it anyway, but wanted to get the brakes done first. Stripped a spindle nut on the rear and can't get a new one on, gotta get a rethreading die. Having trouble bleeding that brakes. The only way I have it a vacuums bleeder, they do work on this system don't they.?

At work we gravity bleed brake systems and it's perfect on most cars. Only a few need manual bleeding

Congratulations, hope it works for you. I installed a used IAC on my 91. It's almost idling correctly. The PO adjusted the idle to nothing trying to reduce the idle caused by the stopped up IAC and I keep working on that.

I screwed up my shifter......well my 92 dropped it shifter out the other day and I jacked it up and put a screw in it. Someone had put a 1/8 pop rivet in it so I also put in a 3/16 pop rivet. Should be  awhile before it is a problem for a while.

replaced the clutch master cylinder and slave on my wife's 94 NA.  I really hate doing the slave.  What a tight space.  Still need to bleed it, but that's the easy part.

Gentlemen! And ladies!

Long time no see!
I’ve had my Capri out a lot this season. Passed the dreaded TÜV (biennial inspection) and is good to go until 2024, when I’ll get the historic plates.

Tracking a problem which illuminates the “Check Engine” light after reaching operating temperature. Stays on. Engine Starts, rund, and reacts normally to throttle. The O2 sensor was replaced before the inspection, so that’s my prime suspect.

Greetings again from Germany. Good to be back!

Finally got the Capri from Duluth!

Drove three hours with a sketchy, spare, and no charging system. Then, when I finally got it up in the air, I found out I had two broken coil springs on the front. So I ordered some H&R lowering springs, put those in the front along with new KYB struts and House brand strut mounts.

Now, I’ve got to do front rotors, calipers, pads, rear sway bar links, replace the coil springs in the rear maybe, put in the new three row racing radiator. Besides the Falken Azenis awaiting installation, that’s about it for now.

94xr2 is up on blocks.  redoing half axles, struts, new springs, ball joints, tie rod ends, new brake flex lines, etc.   When I get this one done, I move onto my wifes 94NA to do the same thing.
