Title: MY XR2 PROJECT/BUILD!!
Post by: coco-customs on June 11, 2009, 04:39:00 PM
Im finally Starting a build thred for my 91 XR2. I bought the car 2 years ago with just over 100,000 for a whopping $500. My girlfriend drove it for the first winter (yes capris love the snow) I then daily drove it for a summer. This is a pic the last summer it was drove.

For the last year now ive been picking at it for a project car.

Sadly the last summer it was drove a deer ran into me....yes it RAN into me not the other way around.

Ive allready got the paint and a few auto body buddys so im now in search of a door and panal to fix it. ANYWAYS my goal with the car is to make the most power (on a budget anyways) and lightest weight EVER!!!!!! I started by completly striping the interior including all unnecessary wiring. .acually about 6 or 7 pounds of it.

The next plans for the interior is a custom sheet metal dash, guages, custom roll cage (acuall one not the maita type) and seat install. I picked up a super clean set of 03 WRX seats for only $100!! There WAY comfy and have nice high bolsters.

As for the power I plan on using a EVO 8 twin scroll 16g turbo with a custom tubular manifold. As for right now I would like to get the body all figured out finish the interior and get a clutch so I can drive it if I want to. Untill then Im just stick piling all sorts of good stuff and my ECU is currently in Rockets hands   (http://graemlins/big-smile.gif)

MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

Few parts so far.....

let me know what you think and im up to all suggestions!!! O YA bone stock. . .  (http://graemlins/big-smile.gif)

And on a closed track of course   (http://graemlins/big-smile.gif)

You should have your ECU soon, I had it out the next day

is that a direct fit gaugepod?

Thats a huge turbo. What size injectors?

Those are nice seats. Excellent project, keep the pics coming!

Post by: rcicustoms on June 12, 2009, 11:17:00 AM
thats a really big turbo for theese little motors.....please get ya some bigger injectors, and please, please, get a wideband hooked up, and reading right before you go playin with boost on that one.....

remember, what rocket has done will make it so you can turn up the boost.... but you can still blow em up real easy..... especially with that evo monster you have there...

lookin good so far

when you hook up your resistor box for those blue top dsm injectors, let me know ill send a pic of the wires i tapped to run em.....
you will also need to carefully cut a tab off each injector before the harness connectors will slide on.....(just try to slide it on and you will see wich one needs to be shaved off)

this is the 14b im gonna run on mine this fall..
and even that is alot of cfm for theese little engines...
on a vj11/14 hybrid im pushing 18-20psi and making arround 190 but with the 14b, just the 14b.. im gonna push 14-16psi and will make 220 or so.....
so with that monster youll make im guessing 12psi 210-220 with the proper support mods...
downpipe is another key ingrediant. and holds back alot of power..your gonna need one n e ways to run that turbo.. 2.5 is plenty 3in is overkill... well thats my 2 cents ...any other questions just ask.... joe....

Got me ECU yesterday, thanks again Rocketman!! I'll first be playing with DSM 450's but I also have a set of stock evo injectors with are around 560cc. The guage pod is acually for a civic or something. Not sure if i'll acually use it yet. Yes its a HUGE turbo for my baby b6t, I have a 13b and 14b laying around but someone allready took that idea   (http://graemlins/big-smile.gif)  so I just had to go bigger. Besides I like puting big turbos on little cars. RCI I was gonna ask for some help with the resistor box when the time comes (really appreciate it) and yes a wideband is on the way (wouldent play without one) but how about the clutch   (http://graemlins/big-wink.gif)

Finally got around to some more work this week. I pulled the motor and trans so I can clean up the engine bay and hide some wiring, patch some holes in my firewall, clean the motor, paint some things and insall my new clutch.

As you can see she sits a little high in the front.

Pulled out. . really dirty, ready to be washed.

I also completly stripped the front bumper of all the support and worked on a newer/custom way to mount the bumper that turned out great. All that stuff weighed a TON.

I also got around to smoking out my tail lights and front corner lights. It used a dab of metalic so I really sparkles in the sunlight. You can kind of tell in the second pic.

I totally forgot about the third brake light so i'll have to get back to spraying that one latter. Other then that I cleaned my engine bay and motor today and started to paint my valve cover. Everything should look pretty good under the hood when im done. My clutch is supose to be here friday so hopefully i'll have everything under the hood all finished for now this weekend.

I really wanted to and planed on geting my clutch today but it was on back order or something so I wont get it untill friday. If I get my clutch early I might toss a couple more things together and cruise down there. But then again I dont want to embarrass everyone with my  %80 dented pass. side  (http://graemlins/big-sad.gif)

There would be no embarrassment!! The MACG isn't really about the cars, so much as the people! Way back when, for the 3rd MACG (2004), we had probably the ugliest Capri in attendance, EVER! White car, black hardtop, missing one headlight, and a broken front Razzi bumper.  The car had a slipping clutch and was only running on 3 cylinders!!  Yet the owners still took it for a few hot laps around the track, and had a great time! No one gave them a hard time, or made fun of the car.  Hell, it was a Capri, and it was there. That's what counted.
Bring your car!  You will have a great time!!

That really encourages me to get it driveable in time!! I think If I dont have it ready by then i'll still be there to check out everyone elses. I know of a couple other capri owners in my area im trying to get to tag aloung also. Joshua, I live in Traverse City. I just added a little black paint to clear coat and sprayed a couple light coats.

coco, if you go to the MACG, ill bring your clutch disc with me....
hows that for a reason to attend.....

besides ill have my td05h-14b powered car there so you can feel and hear the power...

also remember my build is high compression too...

i have a feeling it wont sit arround much...

i know rocket will want to take it for a spin....amongst others.....

Well I got really anxious and just ordered a whole new clutch but I would love to have a spare disk for when I bolt on the 16g  (http://graemlins/big-wink.gif)    Trust me, I really really want to go for a ride in your car and get a up close/real life look at everything. I really dont think my capri will be drivin down there seeing as my clutch wont be here till friday mid day.

Post by: coco-customs on July 21, 2009, 04:08:00 PM
I also got the motor all put back in and have been driving it up and down the road a bit to test out the new clutch (no insurance yet)

I soon realized after installing the motor that everything so far is temperary. Im puting the batery in the trunk so thats why its just siting on the tranny for now. I'll soon have everything on the fire wall all lowered down so u cant see them, and i'll also tuck the remander wires so it will look alot cleaner.
The stock bypass valve is also temp. I was just really excited about testing out the cluch so I just threw it back on for now. It will also look alot cleaner once I get a slimmer fan and install the front mount with nice aluminum piping.

And I must say so far I'd give my new centerforce clutch a good review, along with my general exclaim uhp tires. Together (so far) there a great combo. The clutch grabs great and dosent miss a beat and the tires have amazing dry grip. Im still in the break in period on the clutch so i havent cranked up the boost yet but im working on an exhaust right now so its just an open exhaust right before the cat. so it does boost creep to about 10lbs. I must say with a TON of weight striped, no a/c-powerstearing, decently free flowing exhaust, cone filter, great clutch and tires, and boost at roughly 10lbs this car cooks!! Cant wate for the fuel system, 16g, stainless exhaust, and front mount!!! Will soon easily be a 12 sec. car!!

Well I had differant plans for the the weekend but endend up staying in town. . therefore I was able to make it to open drag day at a 1/8 mile track. I only ran 3 times but was pretty happy with the result. The track is HORIBLE and it honestly felt like I was driving on ice it was so slick.

My times are not the greatest because I was spinning the wheels in first and when I shifted to 2nd. But my trap speed's really wernt that bad. I think if I had a good start and good run I could have easily ran a 9.5 So all in all i guess im pretty happy with the base line numbers, my car is basically stock with only a rocketchip and MBC set at about 15psi, a cone filter, good clutch and decent tires.

The hatch was a friend of mine, he was acually #66 on my time slips (raced and beat him twice). Its just a tuned LS motor but it was dynoed at 189 horspower so that was a good judging factor for me. The other white car was acually a honda too but also slow. As you can see on my time slips I won every time. Gostlrs let me know what you run!!

Hey CoCo! I road in a newer civic a few months ago. The car had an after-market turbo system in place, edelbrock I believe. It was professionally installed and tuned. He claimed it dynoed at 280hp and was doing 13.4 quarters at 104mph with it. I've done 13.8 at 103 in my Capri but have not been on a dyno yet. My seat of pants dyno though tells me my car is quicker. I've not run into him at the track or on the road yet but am looking forward to it. My ride in Rocket's Rocketship gave me an impression, though he has neither dynoed it or supposedly not able to break 15sec quarters. His new reincarnation, the GTXR2, when finished should one hell of a monster. My question for him though is ability for the transmission to take such a beating.  Gus

Just cranked them down manualy. Well in the works right know Is the fabrication of my twin scroll manifold for my 16g. I've also colected a new front mount and radiator with a different mounting situation in mind. I've also got my stainless piping for my exhaust and intercooler piping, new B.O.V, FPR. Just need to finish the interior and im also O so close to picking up another non xr2 for body parts so i'll be able to even paint it this winter!! I'll keep everyone posted on updates.

Got into tearing it apart for the manifold construction.

Verry happy to find that all four oil and coolant lines are so close together on the front of the motor, makes things alittle easier.

Took a couple comparison pics. As you can see the new turbo is about the same size as the stock turbo WITH the manifold attatched.

Comparison of the two cold sides. . .

And my favorite part is the differance in the wastgate flappers.

I got my turbo flange and at this point im just wating on my head flange to start on the manifold. I'll post more during construction.

Well its been a while. I decided to have a go at building my own manifold with the help of a friend. So far its looking good and we were able to make the runners egual length which will be verry helpfull in spooling time. Were now in the process of builing the jig so we can weld it together. Heres a little sneak peak. . .

That header is beautiful !

I know there is a science to primary tube / collector tube size and I know I'm not at all familiar with that stuff but those tubes look huge - are you sure they're not too big for 1.6litres?

Hmmmmmm.................And with a jig to help you weld it, you can then weld more.............Hmmmmm
Title: MY XR2 PROJECT/BUILD!!
Post by: coco-customs on February 18, 2010, 01:06:00 PM
The elbows we used are acually a little smaller then the ones used on your average Honda manfold. For some reason they do look huge in the pictures. The fact that it's a 1.6 is not really a problem but the low comp. ratio Is. I plan on running higher comp. in the neer future. As for the welding, in the pictures the elbows are simply tacked in place. You can't weld it together on the car or all at once. You first most make a jig to secure the two flanges so when it is welded the flanges don't warp and you also can't just weld it all together because there are areas where the runners overlap and it would be imposible to weld. Therefor each runner is welded individually. Building manfolds is an art!!Hope this helps!!

the "serious mod" list is a looong list  (http://smile.gif)  Im just gonna run a mishimoto radiator for a honda on the right side the engine bay in front of the tranny. There small yet efficent. And not as ugly as joes MEGA radiator  (http://smile.gif)

Looking good...300hp here you come! Props for going twin scroll.

Might want to really look into Megasquirt, especially the new MS3 coming out... Easy to setup Anti-Lag. I suspect you may need it with that turbo. Whats the CFM/Max HP rating of that turby?

Interested to see the finished product, I'll let you borrow my shoehorn when I'm done with it.

What kind of welder ya got? Still need to find a good one for myself.

Heres a couple more pics of the manifold bolted to the jig, still need to do a little triming to make it a little shorter.

Intercooler pipes setup

Most of the setup
 (http://i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt349/coco-customs/IMG_1053.jpg)

I ended up going with a Tial 50mm blow off valve as you can see in the last pic. The last piece of the puzzle really is fabing a lower radiator line, weling a couple bungs on the intercooler piping for vacuum lines and a intake.

Mine cost right around $400 to build. A stock replacement would probably be a little cheaper/easier.

or try and get liquid to air intercooler ? i was looking at those online and there not that exspencive.
Title: MY XR2 PROJECT/BUILD!!
Post by: coco-customs on July 01, 2010, 04:52:00 PM
My intercooler is plenty for the setup. It's a Precition 350HP core that's known to be one of the best not a e-bay special. Any bigger and it's just a waste of pressure. One of the main goals for me is to reduce pressure drop and to try to keep spool time as quick as possible that's why I went with 2" IC piping on the turbo side and only 2 1/4 on the throttle body side. Josh- by the time I was finishing up my IC setup I did acually wish I would have built a liquid to air setup, it just would have been more fabrication, time and money.

Post by: Heavensheros on July 01, 2010, 05:19:00 PM
i see i might look into getting a liquid/air intercooler later on down the road but as of right now after seeing your car im trying to find a place to make an exhaust manifold because yours is just sick ... i would wrap mine in exaust wrap along with the turbo exhaust side and downpipe to keep the heat where it should be.
Title: MY XR2 PROJECT/BUILD!!
Post by: Rocketman on July 02, 2010, 04:33:00 AM
I know the liquid/air IC's are great for compact space but they require their own coolant system pumps reservoir, radiator etc. to keep them cool enough. I'm not sure if a system like that is good for a street car? IDK enough about these systems.

But yeah, looking good, twin scroll manifold? Nice. Whatcha doing for engine management?
Title: MY XR2 PROJECT/BUILD!!
Post by: Heavensheros on July 02, 2010, 04:45:00 AM
what is twin scroll ?
Title: MY XR2 PROJECT/BUILD!!
Post by: Rocketman on July 02, 2010, 04:53:00 AM
-__-

Google it...

twin scroll = divided turbine inlets

uses two inlets into the turbine housing. this way you can build a manifold to divert the exhaust pulses more evenly supposed to be good for faster spool and more overall power. usually expensive turbos and custom manifolds though, and makes running external wastegates really tricky

Yep twin scroll!! Im interested to see how good she spools. Well for this summer im just gonna keep boost as low as I have to to run good AFR's with your chip but im woking on finding a cheap miata so I can run the harness out of it and run a AEM standalone EMS. My next investment aside form the body work will be the Mfactory LSD.

Post by: Rocketman on July 02, 2010, 06:22:00 PM
Still bent on that Miata thing eh? You could buy just a Miata harness and sensors if you wanted, but as much wiring as you'd save on the ECU install, you will need to do just as much to mesh the Miata harness with the Capri cabin harness. If you need a hand with standalones we can help!

Well after about 10 months is siting in a garage I finally was able to hit the key.…… and it fired right up!!!! I only drove it a few miles but everything seems to be just right. I dident install the wideband yet and I dident have a MBC on the turbo so I only hit 5 psi just to be safe. I'll have a better update and plenty o pics in the next few days. So excited!!!

I wouldent mind one bit!! I would love the check out your car as well. You should try to make it up here some time this weekend, I'll have the wideband all installed by then and mabie a few minor bugs worked out also but after the weekend the motor/trans will be coming back out for some wire tucking action. Matt, pics videos and more info are all on the way!! I haven't had a single day off work since memorial day!! I'm just waiting for my sesional part time job to rap up in the next month or so and I'll be hard at work to really rap this car up. But for now the open 3 inch stainless downpipe sure does sound mean  (http://smile.gif)

Weeell im back. Picked up another red xr2 for $300 with a blown motor. The paint was really faded but the body is definitely nicer then my other one. Wheeled it out and now its nice and red :)I swapped my complete drivetrain into it and i've got abot 800 miles on it so far and everything seems good.

Wow, nice work! What kind of bypass valve is that?

What are you doing for fuel system & management? Any sort of numbers for what you are running at the moment?

Joe, it looks like you've got some catching up to do, lol!

The BOV is a Tial alpha Q. Its the worlds fastest recirc bov and its amazing! As of right now the fuel system and motor itself is completely stock and Im just running your chipped ECU. With everything the way it is im only running 10psi of boost on the evo8 turbo and the wideband shows good AFR's. No idea on numbers but I am getting it on the local dyno very shortly to get a baseline number.

This may sound like a stupid question but by having the air filter where it is, wouldn't do more harm than good ? Jw

Why would u think that?
Title: MY XR2 PROJECT/BUILD!!
Post by: capriguyJohn on August 03, 2011, 08:02:00 PM
Because thought the air filter had to be where at least some cold air was being sucked in, I had my air filter almost in the same spot on my 91 escort and had lots of people telling me that I was getting more hott air than cold air, maybe I'm wrong
Title: MY XR2 PROJECT/BUILD!!
Post by: Rocketman on August 03, 2011, 08:56:00 PM
With a turbo car, it is intercooled anyway, so it isn't as critical.

It's considered "Mass Air Intake" which is still a huge improvement over the stock airbox & fender snorkel.

Pulling in warm air can actually help increase gas mileage, as the air is less dense. This can cost a small amount of power though.

As long as you're moving though, the engine bay air temp isn't extreme
Title: MY XR2 PROJECT/BUILD!!
Post by: coco-customs on August 04, 2011, 05:40:00 AM
Yep! I acually wont be running a mass airflow for much longer and that spot was just the quickest and easiest spot to mount it.

I lost my password for my login name coco-customs so I started a new account. The car has had a few more things done to it and I've also had a chance to get it on a dyno. I've been driving it on and off for the past years in the summer time. As soon as the snow melts up here in Michigan I will be putting it up for sale as a whole or I may part it out. I have a baby on the way and haven't had enough spare time to continue what I would like to do to the car. I'll be making a post in the classified section soon, but it anyone looks back and sees anything they are interested in send me a message.
