Title: Turbo smoke?
Post by: greywolf27030 on October 20, 2017, 08:29:53 PM
First time today, after idling for a long time, when I accelerated it smoked in first and second.  Grey smoke.  Then it went away.  This only occurs after a long period at idle, not at startup or running. It also has an excessively high idle, 2000RPM.   My car has 65K and since I've had it has only showed 5PSI max on the factory gauge.  It sounds to me like leaking compressor seals.  What do ya'll think?

Thanks, Jack Byrd

Can you get the idle under control?

Check the turbo for shaft play.

I hope to get time to work on it next week.  The idle problem came up after I had the alternator rebuilt.  I found a loose vacuum line, but there may be more.

Thanks, Jack Byrd

Awww that's such a shame Jack hope everything turns out alright with it! My Capri currently is undergoing some stuff to and I was hoping to have a meet around November 4th or 5th.

No smoke today.   Also, no funny noises from the front end.  As far as idle goes, when you get it up to operating temperature, then turn it off and let it set a little, when you crank it back up it idles fine, 900RPM.  When you drive it a lttle at speed, the idle goes back to 2000RPM.

PS, let me know about getting together.

High idle problem was broken PCV valve.  When replacing the alternator, the mechanic broke the PCV and he just stuck it back together without the guts.  Now idle is back down where it should be, but after the car is warmed up, the hoses going to the IAC stay cool, ie. there's no flow thru the IAC.  Fast idle on cold start until you stop and it heat sinks.  Then when you crank it up, it idles at 900RPM, until you run down the road then it goes back up to 1750,  Haven't taken it apart to see why yet.  What is the easiest way to check the turbo end play?  I'm assuming there shouldn't be any appreciable play?
