Title: How do u test the icm on a 92 mercury capri
Post by: Teamreedracing on November 25, 2017, 06:45:09 PM

The spark signal is generated in the distributor. Most often this is a failure of the ignitor in the distributor.

Have you tested for tach signal? (crank the engine, does the tach needle bounce?)

..Had same problem just last week..(Code 01 when you pull your trouble codes)..mine turned out to be the ignition module in the Distributor...very costly at Auto Parts store..around $220 for the module or $250 for a rebuilt Distributor...get on EBay there's a guy selling Cardone Rebuilt Distributors(dual vacuum) still in the box for $25...

..passenger side in Engine bay on firewall you will find 3 connecters..1 Large green..1 Large yellow and "1 Small Green"...take a wire and place it into the SMALL Green Connector and ground it...turn key ON but DO NOT start the car..watch the check engine light it will go off than start blinking in dashes the stored codes to you..copy the codes down then go to the "search" on this page and write in "ECM CODES"..there you will find the meaning of the codes..

...ENSURE that you do not have the Turbo...the distributors are different from non-turbo and turbo engines...

Having been through this situation myself, I went to autozone for the igniter, got a warranty with it..don't remember if 1 year or lifetime .
That said , I should have done that from the beginning, had 4 or 5 Cardone dist thru (?, I'll think of it ) and all did the same thing, puked out in no time, made almost 9 months on 1 of them . Last time they just refunded my $ and called it a day. Cardone had some Really cheap igniters, 2 had a made in Hong Kong sticker on them . My experience anyhow . Good luck with it .

...Well that's certainly interesting Pappy..my 91 didn't have a distributor when I got it 11 years ago..got a Cardone Rebuilt at Advance and 27,000+ miles later it's still going strong...knock on wood...LoL..LoL..

Yeah, 11 years ago ! I'd like to know when they went with cheapened parts . Shoot, 11 years ago I was in better shape, haven't found a rebuild kit for me tho and would be leery if I did...foreign parts ya know  :P  Now to track down my 3500 rpm stutter, haven't gotten close to that yet...
Keep your eyes on the road folks , be safe

..well I got my two Cardone Rebuilt Distributors that a paid $25 a piece for..matched them up to the Cardone Rebuilt Distributor that I bought 11 years ago for my 91 and everything matches up including the numbers on the Ignition Module...nothing says Made in Hong Kong...put a New Rebuilt in the 94 and she fired right up...YES..!!!!...

Checked output of coil ? The infamous blue wire behind coolant tank ? Mine was pretty well corroded and the others weren't in that good of shape either..can't think of module it comes from but with coolant tank out you can see all the wires back there .

Rocketman is correct, the ignition system is operated independently from the ecu.

When you turn the ignition switch to the run position, do any dummy lights turn on (check engine, airbag, or battery indicator)?

Have you checked the 15A "Engine" fuse located in the fusebox under the dash? This fuse directly provides switched +12V power to the distributor's IGN module, the ATX module(if it's an automatic),and turns on the main fuel injection relay.  The wire is black/white stripe.

If you have +12v at the distributor's black/white wire when the switch is in the run position, you should see the tach bounce when cranking the engine.

Chrispoe asked about some basic troubleshooting. Have you done any of it? Help us help you - we're not magic wizards here

Poke'n'hope parts replacement is unlikely to fix your problem. Proper troubleshooting will narrow down the list of causes and will reduce wasting parts, money, and your time

I tried to splice the wiring that the rabbits chewed up but still dont do nothing and I've tested the wires so the only other option is to replace the wiring harness

...Thanks Pappy..!!!...my friend just had a stall/no start on his 93(must be that time of year)..it turned out to be the 8 wire green connect located below the radiator reservoir(you need to remove the bottle to get to the connect).. the blue wire had broken off going into the connect plus the connect was nasty with crud..after I repaired the broken blue wire and cleaned up the 8 wire connect she fired right up....
