Title: My Plasti-Dipping adventures!
Post by: tonlaw71 on September 24, 2013, 01:32:42 PM

So, I figured I would post up some pics of my adventures with Plasti-Dip. For those of you unfamiliar with the product, here's brief rundown:

Plasti-Dip is a rubberized coating originally formulated to provide a non-slip grip on tool handles and other surfaces. Over the last few years, people have been using it to "dip" parts of cars like wheels, trim, emblems or even whole cars because of the ability to peel the Plasti-Dip off without damaging the underlying surface (I have a video posted on here of peeling the dip). There are now many different colors available as well as the ability to tint the base colors into limitless possibilities. The product is available in spray cans in limited colors at most home improvement stores or in gallons that can be sprayed with most electric home spray guns. Pep Boys carries a lot of diffferent colors as well. It is also available from the manufacturer in un-thinned gallons that you can thin and tint yourself. Or there is a company called dipyourcar.com that has many exclusive colors pre-thinned. Just search on youtube for "Plasti-Dip" and you will learn anything you want to know!

Now, on to the fun part... The pictures!!

I started small since I had no idea what I was getting myself into. This is after one coat using spray cans on the spoiler:

Here it is after 4 coats and installed on the car. Not too bad for the first attempt!

Now, since that went so well...I tried to create a Plasti-Dip "bra"...

Everything was fine until I tried to peel the tape...I didn't realize at the time that you have to peel the tape while the dip is still wet!! :-( So, I had to improvise a little and came up with this...

So, after much deliberation...I decided to get a little more adventurous:

Tada!! Not too shabby!!

And since that went so well...

And, of course the hard top needed some attention as well!!

After all of that hassle with the spray cans, I decided it was time to invest in a sprayer and do this the right way!! I ordered a "Pro car kit" from www.dipyourcar.com (http://www.dipyourcar.com) and got busy!!

Awesome!! Well, I think so, anyway...

Then, I decided since my wheels were done very poorly (by me) I would tackle them next. I used a new Plasti-Dip from Dipyourcar.com called Metallic Anthracite. Loved it!!

Bonus was it only took about a can and a half to do all 4 wheels, so I had enough to do the spoiler and the trim around the car!

Then, of course, I couldn't stop there! This is using a color called "Blaze Blue". Dr. Bob really liked this!! :-)

I have now become completely obsessed with this stuff and have peeled everything off except the dip on the wheels and have gone in a COMPLETELY different direction! I will be revealing that new direction at the 5th Annual North East Capri Gathering!!

Here's a quick vid of peeling the dip off the trunk...

This is so freakin cool. I am going to have to do this now. My GTXR2 is begging for dipping

I agree......Because I can't decide on a color for the new 'Roo, I think I will be picking up the ProCar kit, as well. Make it any color I want, and no worries - peel it off when I tire of it!

That's a great idea, Russ! You might want to think about adding in some of the pearlizer or glossifier stuff. I haven't been able to afford to try it yet, but it sure looks awesome!

How does it hold up to stone chips?

I haven't gotten any yet and I drive the car every day. Nothing to or from the MACG either. Not very scientific, but I would say it holds up pretty well.

SO, I was finally able to reveal the new color at the 5th NECG!! Now I can update this thread with all the new pics! WOOT!!

This time around, I removed the tail lights and the center panel, the rear marker lights, antenna, fog light inserts and mirrors. Made prep much faster and easier and I was able to leave the mirrors, antenna and fog light inserts black. Oh, and I removed the outer window trim from the top of both doors. When I did the black, I sprayed right over those and the dip began to separate because of the movement while opening and closing the doors.

And without further ado....

Here she is all peeled and ready for her new color...

I am curious as to how the finish feels...is it smooth or is it rough at all?

It's smooth, but has a rubbery texture? Kind of hard to describe

Thanks for the great write up and pictures.  My spoiler is not looking too good.  I've got to think of a good color to go with my Reef Green.

So how long does it last for? Is it susceptible to scratches or scrapes or rain?

I recently used the stuff to paint the front and rear bumpers black on my silver capri (two spray cans used).  it hides the scuffs and discolorations really nicely. the product was developed for use with hand tools in order to give them the "rubberized" grip that some tools come standard with.  therefore, i gotta think the stuff holds up well.  i have had no scratches or road chips yet.

Rain and snow do not affect it all. Road debris won't hurt it unless you get hit by a pretty big rock. It can be susceptible to scratching by sharp objects, but it is easily repaired. Cleaning/drying is a bit of a challenge if you prefer to hand wash. Most cloths will leave lint all over it. Your best bet is to get a "dip washer" from dipyourcar.com to prevent that. Or just taking it to a car wash! Pressure washing and automatic car washes with the brushes don't hurt it either. It's pretty hardy stuff! I sprayed mine in my garage, so weather wasn't an issue. If you do it outside, stay out of direct sunlight as it tends to try super fast as it is. Oh, and if you intend to do the whole car DO NOT use rattle cans. You can use any HVLP (high volume low pressure) sprayer to apply the dip.

Hi there!

Wow!! That Plasti-Dip really looks good! I have seen it advertised and watched videos of people doing their cars and wheels with it.
I have a 91 Capri. Its Cardinal Red and has never been in winter weather. The body is great for a car that is 23 years old and never been painted. For a car that doesn't have a clearcote finish, it has a deep shine to it after waxing.. The only problem are the wheels. I cleaned them up after getting the car but they are losing their finish. I have seen the Plasti-Dip videos and the finshed products look really really good! My wheels are the standard 91 geometric design 14" rims. So many small holes that I wonder if I will have a hard time doing them. vI guess only one way to find out is to do one and see how it looks when finished. I'll let you know what happens.

XR2Man.....Jim

the rims are easy to do no need to tape off tires, just peel off over spray.  don't even need to take wheels off car.  I just cleaned mine with brake cleaner  and then sprayed them with gunmetal grey and then the silver metallic and then clear  used 2 cans of grey 1/2 car of metallic and 1 can of clear for all four wheels.  grand total was around $30  and about 3hrs of work.

next spring going to put new rims and wheels on it

I gave it a try today.  It is very cool.  I mixed equal parts black and red.  It turn out pretty good.  I finished it the dark, so I expect to have to do some touch up.

This was a quick job,  I only did "major" dents.  I also had to touch up the trunk lid but not bad.  I may clear it for a little more sheen.

This is the first time I've read this thread. Pretty interesting stuff that I'll have to experiment with.

A view from the other side, I use to wire homes in my younger years. All electricians use Klein tools and mostly all remove the rubber coating and dip in Plasti-Dip. We usually dipped three times to get a good thick coat on. The stuff lasts a lifetime. It can scuff like when dropping a tool but it's rubber and resists much abuse.

From what I remember they only had one color but that might of been what all electricians used. It was a maroon/burgundy color and it was opaque. It seems like I bought it at Home Depot.

It's good the company come a long ways and probably raised sales ten fold.

On the bright side if you plow over a power pole you won't get electrocuted. :)

Interesting pics!  I'm wondering IF this plasti-coat is what's on my spoiler.  I noticed bumps in one area of the spoiler, then I could feel, "it's plastic coating".  Without tearing things apart, my guess is; damage/rust and it was"coated" over, without proper prep work.  This guess is based on a small area of rust, on trunk deck, where spoiler attaches.  ANY IDEAS, based on this description?

I may have missed the answer to this question, but how much prep work is required prior to Plasti-Dip application? Sanding and cleaning or just a good wash?
Title: Re: My Plasti-Dipping adventures!
Post by: tonlaw71 on June 04, 2015, 12:38:00 PM
You really just need a good cleaning. Make sure you get ALL of the dirt, oil, grime etc. If you have major scratches, you may want to sand those down, otherwise just clean real well and spray!
