Title: The 1992 XR2 (SOLD)
Post by: CapriXR92814 on September 17, 2018, 02:23:21 PM
Hello everyone; I picked up a XR2 and have been nose deep in the forum for a few weeks. I would like to introduce myself (Jeremiah) and get to know everyone. This little video I took explains the basics as I'm about to head to work.

Big plans are ahead possibly; dependent on how much this car grows on me. I recommend watching the video until I have time to add my flurry of pictures.

Welcome, looks like you scored big time.  Good luck with it, they are habit forming.

That's a pretty one for $600, especially with the turbo and hardtop! I love those wheels, and it looks like it's in about the same condition that I bought mine in. Capris are a spartan economy car with a luxury badge and they leak water like nobody's business, but they are endearing little cars

I'm constantly frustrated by the tiny engine bay and my slow N/A motor, but I don't think I'll give it up any time soon

Issues on the capri have risen. I started the day with a test ride and the turbo stayed at 6psi on a short drive. I park it and take the headlight out to put in new grease; try on a ride after and the turbo boosts to over 15psi and feels like it keeps going. I've only driven a few times after that to test for a possible leak or see if anything happened when I undid my previous work. My guess is the wastegate is stuck closed possibly? Car doesn't have a MBC that I see; but if I am not mistaken I have a 1G DSM BOV. I havent checked for Rocketchip assuming this car was all stock.

I figured it's been quite awhile since I updated you all on my Capri. Since it's cooling down for a coolant flush I figured I would have enough time to type out a few lines and pound some images into your retinas. Updates that I have not taken pictures of are a MBC, gauge, and un-pictured new tires. Thankfully cops aren't on my ass about inspection around here; staties would nail me though. That's getting done tomorrow! I did take apart the headlight motor and it worked for a few weeks until it stopped one night. My guess is I used industrial heavy equipment grease instead of a conductive kind? I am hoping, and what are my options for gauge mounting? I scored a sweet Auto meter off of eBay for $25 and got her hooked up yesterday.

Looking for that Rocketchip Rocketman  ;D
Feast your eyes upon this beaut.

She has that war-torn look to her in my opinion.

Good score for $600. You should plan on replacing those hard brake lines when you do the rubber ones, they'll never come off without twisting in two with that corrosion.

Just replaced the fuel filter, a thermostat, radiator cap, and a temperature switch in hopes of having heat. Haven't had time to test completely.

The levers that control the blender box and heat are plastic and tend to break.   You might want to check those out if you are not getting heat.

Your post reminds me of my car: a $600 '93 Capri XR2. Good luck with the build and welcome to the community :)

Been awhile since updates. I've gotten winter tires all around in time for the snow. Switched the inlet and outlet hoses of the heater core and it now has heat. Nothing is broken in the climate control either

Cool tip on the heater hoses.  May try that.  My heat is minimal.  Also my IAC doesn't work wonder if that would work on it?

Unsure what many abbreviations are for the Capri. IAC? I have heat above 15 degrees lol.

Unsure what many abbreviations are for the Capri. IAC? I have heat above 15 degrees lol.

IAC - Idle Air Control
TPS - Throttle Position Sensor
ECU - Engine Control Unit
N/A - Naturally Aspirated (non turbo)
XR2 - Turbocharged Capri
PCV - Positive Crankcase Ventilation

These are a few common ones.

Little update on life personally and for the Capri. We have moved to Columbia, South Carolina as of May 1st. I’ve been bouncing between ideas and upgrades and I think I’ve finally decided what I would like the end goal to be. I would like to get a stand-alone ecu in and lots of custom work. The little green machine is growing on me.

I'm only seeing this post now but I noticed you've got no engine splash shields under your engine. Also- what grease did you end up using on your headlight linkages?

Met a guy outside of Columbia some years ago, was 1/2 way through converting his xr2 to electric... his phone went out of service and I lost him... Columbia is HOT in the summer, with lots of pesky gnats!  Have fun!
