Title: Getting to know the members
Post by: Seth on April 24, 2003, 12:58:00 PM
It’s been a while since I’ve seen this question so here it is.
1.Name
2.Location
3.Why did you buy your Capri/323 and what do you like best about it?
4.If money were no object, what would your dream car be?
5.What would you want a Capri to be if they start making it again? (i.e. soft top, retractable hard top, engine, etc.)

I'm boB, and I am a Capriaholic.  I'm from Illinois, Freeport to be exact.  I bought my Capri  for the same reason I like it.  THE TOP GOES DOWN !!!!  If I had an unlimited budget for a new car, I would design my own.  I have a few ideas, and certain aspects of the Capri would be integrated.  As for new Capri's, I am sorry, but the Capri is such a sissy name, I dont think they will come out with another one.

Name's MacK (short for McKinze) live in Phoenix, AZ but I am from a small Oregon Coast town called Toledo. I bought my Capri cause I thought it was an ugly ass car but had some down right potential! heheheheh

Dream car? I don't have one... I fucking hate cars!

Dream Capri? 3.8L V6 Twin Turbo mated to a Six-speed. Short wheel base with two piece top (think removable t-top)

I figure I might as well answer my own question, so:
1.Seth
2.Evergreen Montana
3.I bought the Capri cause a wanted a dependable car that was good on gas as a backup while I fixed up the Monte. The fact that it’s a convertible was just a great bonus.
4.My dream car is a Ferrari 550 Maranello (not the 575 cause I don’t like the paddle shift)
5.I think the Capri name is a little sissy too. But a Capri with different name but the same idea would be sweet (sorta like the change from the Lumina to the Impala, basically the same car, but new body and name). I would want a retractable hardtop like the  Lexus SC430 (http://www.lexus.com/images/showroom/model/gallery/extphotos/sc/ext_C43-060.jpg), and definitely a DOHC twin turbo V6 like the Mitsubishi GT3000. Maybe even a 4WD option.

Anthony

Baltimore, Maryland (Give it up MD  (http://graemlins/alien.gif) )

I bought my capri to compete with. I wanted a car not seen often and not even tried for show use. I wanted to create a car of my own have it convertiable and that was special. The name capri doesnt bother me as it has a history of more then 40 years and most car models cant say that.

My dream car was always a firebird. If I had to choose a year for a stock model it would be a 1969 Dual RamAir with the 350ci block. MMMM 325+ horses  (http://graemlins/big-biggrin.gif) .

Thank god, someone else who likes GM’s too. You just can’t beat those small blocks for weight and power output.

My dad bought me my first new car when I was a senior in HS-
a 1969 350 firebird, orange with a black vinyl top.
I remember it was the first orange car I ever saw anywhere.

In 1971 daddy bought me a brand new muscle car, a dodge challenger, blue with a white inside, white vinyl top and a sunroof.
That was my personal favorite.

In 1977 daddy bought me a new chrysler cordoba, with the exact same color scheme as the challenger. It too had the sun roof.
My second favorite car.

In 92 I bought my first capri, in 94 I bought black beauty, and in 2002 I bought the other 2 capris. So I've owned 4 of em. What a wacko.

I'm from Bklyn, NY live in south florida, married to a beauty from texas and I'm startin to be livin large.

Life is good.

Im Artur and i live in Macau, a place near Hong Kong. I buy my Capri because its a cheap car and its a convertible, but now i really love it and want to keep it for a long time. I spent a lot of money on it already but its really cool now with the Clubsprint Kit and in Yellow  (http://smile.gif)
My dream car would be a new Benz SLK hehehe
I think for a new Capri, it should have some more futuristic design, keep the retractable lighs, have a powerfull engine and rear wheel drive  (http://smile.gif)

Dave

From Burlington Washington

I bought my Capri because I was looking at convertibles, after looking at several Mustangs I thought geesh mustang convertibles are a dime a dozen then I saw the Capri and after looking them up on the net I desided on a 94 Reef Green Xr2 and after a bit of a search I found just what I was lookng for

As for a dream car I would like something like a 442 convertible or a challenger convertible.

what I would like to see in a capri..make it a rear wheel drive with a v-6 I like the front end but maybe restyle the rear and add a slightly bolder bumper on the rear

My name is Danny. Im in the Bay area, CA. Ive got two 323s. My first is an 86' dx pullin mad 85hp to the front wheels. Only perfomance mod is k&n cone intake. my sleeper is my 88' gt. It has 260hp to the wheels. Mods are everything. If I want more power, Ill need bigger injectors, different distributor, and a 323 gtr ecu, hopefully then ill be pulling over 320 hp to the wheels.

I think the capri is a cool little car, only noticable by people after they get dusted by the xr-2. Stupid ricers...

Damn that GT has gotta be a kick to drive. Have you ever taken it to a strip?
Title: Getting to know the members
Post by: jd323 on June 18, 2003, 08:33:00 AM
I have not. The previous owner, had taken it to the strips and his best 1/4 mile time was a mid 12 seconds with a correct launch. It is very hard to get a good launch, you must feather the throttle in first through second to avoid whelspin. I can smoke the tires going 50 mph in second gear by just pressing down the throttle. Extremely fun car though. Looks like a normal 323 except for the j-spec bumper and huge m2 intercooler in the front.

Wow, 12’s are definitely hard to get into with a FWD. With all the money I sunk into Monte number one I was hardly any faster than that. And as for the Capri, I simply wouldn't think of taking to the strip since I don't want to completly embarass myself. Just goes to show what power to weight ratio’s can do though. Now if you ever decide to get rid of that GT definitely let me know  ;)

3.We are currently on our fourth Capri.  The first one we bought 4-5 years ago, a black '93 w/ a hardtop, for everyday transportation.  Ended up trading that for a '97 Dodge Ram.  The 2 current Capri's both came of off EBAY.  The first of these, is a '91 Modified, 108,000 mile rice eater!  This is my daily driver, and I plan to get 250+ horses out of the bad boy(Check out pictures at Yahoo Groups Capri site, under "Russ & Di's Modified" file)The second, we just bought last weekend- a '91 XR2 w/32,500 miles! Perfect condition, and includes a hard top!  This one is getting stored for future collectability!  The fourth Capri we owned, was a beat 91 XR2, we bought for parts.  Capri's are easily one of the better handling, better looking        cars around-even if they are up to 13 model years old! And the fact that they can get 35+ MPG, and have a rag top, is just a real big bonus!!
4.Anything Ferrari!!
5. Turbo 6 cyl., 6-speed trans, 2+2 seating (for cheaper insurance), retractable hard top, unique design, and FOR SURE, named Capri!!

1.) Elisa and Matt, from Atlantic City, NJ

2.) We own a 91 Capri XR2 that we bought a little less than a month ago, but are selling already...not willing to get involved with a car with such expensive parts and limited supply, and main suppliers trying to charge $189 for a USED carpet.     So now we are stuck trying to sell a 77K mile XR2 with hardtop...the car is wonderful and so fun to drive, but with 2 cars that we already enjoy buying parts for (and are spoiled by a large, inexpensive aftermarket), there just isn't room for the Capri in our lives right now.

3.) Dream Car? Hard question...I'm one of those pack rat types that likes so many different cars that I have to be patient enough so I can buy them all   :D   We already have 2...my 94 GT and Matt's 88 5.0 coupe, so I guess we're well on our way    (http://graemlins/devil.gif)

4.) Turbo, more curves, and retractable hardtop.

I'm Josh from Dallas, Texas

I bought my '92 Capri about a month ago, because I was looking for a drivable car with good gas mileage so I could fix up my '97 Ford Thunderbird.  Also, was looking for a car under $1000.  After looking at a rusted out '86 Escort, and a wrecked '94 Corsica, I saw Misti (the car) sitting in the back of a high end used car alot, so I said to my girlfriend "I know I can't afford it, but I always wanted one since I first one".  I offered the guy $900, he took $1000, then I spent 2 hours making it driveable enough to get across town (Yeah, I bought it without even test driving it.)  Had to replaced the alternator belt/water pump belt to get it to start (yeah, it disintegrated as the last person drove it in, strips of belt were still hanging from underneath)  Got halfway home and noticed there was no water, and a 6 inch crack in the top of the radiator - stopped and filled it with tap water to get it home.  Fixed the radiator, rebuilt the headlamp motor, fixed the windshield wipers, replaced the valve-cover gasket, changed the oil, buffed the heck out of it, and it's a great car, I'm having a blast with it.  You know how you buy a car, any car, and you noticed that everyone else has one?  Since I've bought my Capri, I've only seen two, and being Dallas with a high population density, that's remarkable.

It's hard to narrow down to one dream car.  If I absolutely HAD too, I'd go with the new model Thunderbird, in that Graphite metallic color, but I'd ditch the regular v8 and put in the DOHC 4.6 from the Cobra Mustang, and a supercharger.  Yeah, I could probably live with that and be happy.

Or a Capri with a 4G20T Turbo Eclipse engine.

4. BMW, Porche or Mercedes ragtop.

My name is Reid, I live in Maryland, south of D.C.
I bought a '91 for my wife to use as a commuter about a year and a half ago.  She is not fond of little cars, but we saw this for sale on the side of the road and she had to have it. We have been very happy with it.  When we pull up next to a Z-3 or something, we just think ; that's a nice car but, dollar for dollar we've got you beat bad.  We both would love to have the new Capri Cabrio.

1.  Rodney
2.  Houston/San Antonio/Austin/College Station Texas
3.  My second car and my first stick was a '93 Capri that I got in '96 while I was still in college.  It was a blast to drive when the weather was well, but I hated it in the rain and for long distance trips (road noise).  I always wanted a hard top for it but just couldn't afford it.  While I had it I let one of my frat brothers borrow it and he ran it into a low water crossing during a horrible storm.  It got flooded out and I had to put into the shop for an engine rebuild.  It was out of commission for a long time.  I rear ended somebody once and somebody backed into me once. All in all during the 9 months that I owned it it seemed like the bringer of bad luck so I let it go.

Fast forward to 3 months ago.  I ran upon a 94 XR2 and upon realizing what a hard car it was to find I had to buy it.  My wife let me do it and now I can relive the good times of having a Capri.  I already have a primary car so I can just drive the capri when the weather is nice.  I also have a hard top on the way so I can really enjoy the car as I wanted to the first time!

4.If money were no object I would ask for several cars not just one.  I would want 2 honda civics for everyday driving (me and the wife).  An escalade XL to hall the kids around in (sit on 22's with TVs etc.).  An M5 that I would take Euro delivery on.  My capri for my project car.

5.  Exact same car as now with wood grain accents and better leather.  A 200+ hp engine and AWD.  I would like to keep it as an inexpensive car.  A toyota or honda engine for reliability would be nice too.

My name is Arseny, I live in Toledo, Ohio.
Love cars..

I like the capri because it was designed by very special Ghia and interior by Gugario ItalDesign who had designed many exotic cars such as Lotus Esprit Turbo..
I like Capri XR2 styling - bold, wedge shape of 80/90 exotic supercars..

I like that it has modern DOHC 16V 1.6L engine, can't stand push rods  (http://smile.gif)
I love that it has turbo so more HP out of it is not a problem..

Capri XR2 Turbo was build using 323 GTX as a base, as you know that car has won multiple WRC races and is a proven race technology in rally form little 1.6 DOHC Turbo was pushing 300+ HP  (http://smile.gif)
Try that corvette  (http://smile.gif)

I like that it is convertible - it's my first..

And ofcourse the deciding factor is that it is now forgotten by people so price is cheap.. but it worth alot more!

If money was no object I would buy one of my favorite cars - exotic sports cars - mid engined -probably Ferrari 348 or 355  (http://smile.gif)  Love Diablos too..

I would like to see next capri follow new technology and by DOHC and a turbo, better if it would be RWD or AWD but not required  (http://smile.gif)

Just don't make it to look like Focus/Courgar/new age styling really has no soul.. Make it look like old Jaguars/Ferraris/C5 Corvettes/ G3 RX7s/ 3000GT/Stealth or atleast like edgy Esprit..

My dream car would be: 3000 lbs - mid engined - V8 Turbo or V10 DOHC - carbon fiber body - F1 technology  (http://smile.gif)

1.rob green

2.murrieta, calif

3.i've always liked the capris, and one came up on ebay at a price i could not resist. one of my first new cars was a 1987 323 hatch, and that car was a great toy and had a lot of power given it's station in life. knowing the capri was built on the same platform made it an easy pick for me as a 'car i would like to own someday". it also would be a great r&d addition to my current full time business, zxtuner.com, a speed shop devoted to making/selling speed parts for small fords.

4. Dream car? Too many to choose from. Currently, I have a soft spot for a lancer evo or if i'm really dreaming, a ford RS200 or GT40.

5.First off, I think Mercury has no business selling small cars. They often leave them stillborn by dealers who only know how to sell town cars to the geriatric set and navigators to rappers. That being said, I'd like to see a Ford Capri (as in EU and AU) and I'd like to see it made as a lightweight roadster in the Lotus Elise / Opel Speedster vein. Mid engined, sub 2000 lbs, perhaps with a 2.3 PZEV motor riding a turbo. Now that would spank the socks off a S2000!

Howdy!
Sorry about the delay in answering your questions about my mods, but I was om vacation in Ocean City, MA, and just got back!

The vast majority of the mods were already done when I bought the car last year off Ebay.  The seller-Tim Cahill-is one of the origanal members of the Yahoo Mercury Capri XR2s and modified Capris group.

This is a list of the mods he had performed to the car:
"drilled out airbox w/ K&N airfilter, 2 1/4" manedral bent cat-back exhaust
(removed resinator & high flow cat) with a thrush glass-pack and a brospeed 4" outlet (sounds great), lightend flywheel, NGK plugs and wires, ZEX
nitrous oxide system, fuel management system, Intrax Racing Springs (2"  drop), Razzi Body Kit, Kammari Bubble Top (not installed yet), 15" Enkie
Rims on Low Profile tires, XR2 wing, Had the engine re-tuned by a performance shop, Short-Throw shifter. As far as the stereo, I have a JVC head unit & 12 disk changer."

I have since removed the K&N filter, and replaced it with a Conical style filter.  The NO2, and fuel managment system were already off the car when I bought it, as was the Bubble top  :(

The mods I have planned for this winter, are:

Club sprint rear end
Bubble top
F50 rear wing
Custom front end
DAD racing seats/Sparco 3 point racing harnesses (already in the garage!)
Red interior
Millinium Yellow paint w/graphics
Carbon hood
Complete engine rebuild by local race shop-looking for 250 hp, BEFORE the 50 hp NO2 shot!!
16" wheels on low-profile tires.

That about covers everything!!
Hope this answered your questions!!

Hey Russ, you didn't get any ideas from my car did ya?  lol.  I look forward to seeing it.  keep me informed via pics, you have my address.  After the first of the year, we can start thinking about next years meet.  DId you still want the cover?   Which bubble top are you putting on, the Kamaniri or the clubsprint?  Let me know how hard the rear end is to put on.  And I have to see what a custom front end is going to look like.

Bob-
First and foremost, Diana & I are glad that your surgery came out OK. Hope everything is still going fine.
Second-Yes I still want the top.  We can get together via email, and work out a day and time.
Third- Hell, yes, I got ideas from your car!!  Actually, most of the mods I have planned, I thought about before I even knew about your car-great minds think alike, huh??  I plan on the Clubsprint rearend, and the front end will probably appeal to virtually no one on this forum! To "Ricey".  But I want a car that I never have to worry about seeing one just like it anywhere, and I think this fits the bill! pictures will come when it is getting close to being done-Probably around 2007!!

Hello!

My name is Rich. I live in the San Joaquin Valley and work in the San Francisco Bay area. Lots of great top down weather, even in the winter!

Presently driving a white 91 xr2, with 237,000 miles on the original engine. It's my primary commute car, and I add another 3000 miles or so every month. First capri was a non-turbo, traded it away for a minivan. Kids are a little older now, so during my 2nd mid life crisis I bought the xr2 4 years ago.

I love the handling, power and fuel economy (duh!), plus where else can you get stares driving a car that books out for $0, but can beat most everything else on the road off the line? Besides, having a car payment sucks! It's also quite cheap to insure.

Dream car? I'm already driving it. Well, it could use a paint job, but I've spent about $1000 restoring it over the last couple months so now I'll bet it books out a little higher than before.

If the Capri ever comes back, my only wish is that FORD has the courage/committment to stick with the model for a long production run so that future owners don't have to struggle for parts like we do.

Rich H.

Waaaaazaaaaap!!
My Name is ClinT. I Live In New York about 45 min above the city. I love my lil red rocket cause it handles, it accelerates and girls are unexplainably attracted to it.
Coincidentally, today i met a girl with a gray '92 xr2 we putzed around racing on a local main drag and  then pulled ovr to have a 20 min talk with a beauty i have nevr met before, not only that but she might have even gotten me a job.   (http://tongue.gif)
Yeah so my 91 non-turbo hasnt let me down yet, though i wish it was turbo i didnt have much trouble beating her, idk whether it was becuase she didnt know how to push her car or it was just old  (my car = 50,000 miles   (http://graemlins/alien.gif)  )
Granted the car hadles well i wish it handled better and had a different gear ratio for first and second. Great mileage is also a forte with colleges kids like me and it has alot of room and poential for upgrades , though there arent many places that i have found with extreme aftermarket parts (e.g.- air bag suspension)However i am extremely interested in that v6 engine conversion and would like to know the ins and outs cause im a do it yourslef type of person and would like to know if that project is do-able or if i have to get someone to do it because of the ecu and computer management/programming.
Dream Car(s): if i could only choose one it would be a 2k2 RT/10 Dodge Viper Black, chrome rims, BLue underglow, blue to chrome tinted windows, and an SVS TT RS Twin turbo upgrade giving the car wheelie capability at an estimated 1,700 h.p......and if the engine doesnt detonate, maybe a lil' waft of NOS to the intake manifold's.
My Second and most possible dream car is a 94 RX-7 R1. Engine stripped and a brand new 20B rotary engine installed , twin sequential turbo's and a  courtesy of avonaero.com  Finally a site like this that sells mini jet engine turbines, took me months and to actually build my possible rice rocket (literally) im guessing it will take an estimated 5 years considering i have to conceal the exhaust port for the jet engine by making the whole unit retractable but strong enough to handle the 400lbs. of thrust generated thereby making my soon to be RX-7 technically the fastest around, period.
As Far as changes for a better capri, I would lower it maybe and inch or two possibly, four wheel drive, V6 twin turbo (even if the turbo's have to be in the trunk) an intercooler for obvious reasons a sixspeed tranny and t-tops, with a more hatchbak style rear window, 16 inch borbet rims and an inch of rubber, preferably a more sticky rubber though, the car is so light it needs a higher coefficient of friction. However due to its weight .... or lack there of, im thinking it can get pretty close to a high end performance car.

I'm Andy and I live in Berwick, Pennsylvania.  I'm 16 and my red 91 capri is my first car.  A friend of ours was selling his old capri so at the time, I thought it would be the best deal on a car.  Now, I love to drive it with the top down on the warmer days.  My dream car would probably be a Lambourghini or some kind of awesome, fast car.  I also like Cadillac Escalades.  If a new capri came out I'd like to see it have a little more power, automatic retractable top, and maybe a little bit more room in the back seat.

Oh yeah almost forgot!

I got the Capri because I like the look's and it reminds me of my first Fiero(2.5 one) slow but still a blast to drive. The looks reminds me so much of the Lotus that I truely love, The motor feel somewhat like the Storm Gsi my sister had but with a little less power, and my Sunbird Convertible was ready to retire.

My dream car is sorta weird, I would so love to have another infiniti M30 90-92 the only years they was made of course) ONLY a hard top tho as the convertibles look too much like a Celica/Nissan 240 Conv. cross

I wish they would make the capri again with a mid motor design (but must keep the back seat shelf area for items to be placed)with at least a 1.8 and a turbo at the smallest motor and a v-6 as a add on if you wanted more power with the hard top as standard item! Dont use left over looking items like the sable looking steering wheel, something totaly fresh and new to the eye, well besides motor and basic stuff like that. AWD would be good if it was a fWD also.

Hi My name is Mark and I live in a rural area of south Australia. I own a genuine '92 clubsprint for a bit over 12 months and I love the looks and pleasure of driving this car. I'm a professional photographer and I travel into Adelaide city about 4 days a week and it's a one way trip of a bit over 70 miles and I was driving a nice comfortable cruise controlled practical GMH wagon and one day I just said to myself...'If you're doin all these miles why not enjoy it?' So I sold the comodore and bought the clubbie...and had change $$$. This car turns more heads than anything. People are always asking what it is and none believe it cost me only 10k...they all reckon it looks like a forty k car. It's metalic black(like all the 200 clubies built in '92) and has had the original alloys chromed and looks nice though have had some trouble with leaking tyres as chrome plating lifting on rim seal.
Dream car always gullwing merc.
New capri....def. retractable top...although I hardly ever put mine UP! Rear wheel drive for sure and 4 or five seats.
Anyway nice to say hi to you all and have a safe and prosperous new year. Cheers from OZ

hey my names robbie im from st. petersburg Florida. I bought my capri because my uncle was selling it real cheap and i needed a car. turns out i couldn't have made a better choice because i love that car. my favorite thing about it is it has so much potential, that and the hole convertible thing. if money wasn't a factor my dream car would be a 1998 dodge viper gts. finally if they started making the capri again i would like to see a 3.8L v6 with twin turbo, duel exaust, t-tops, and a tight suspension.

The name's Mark from Cincinnati, Ohio. I was actually looking for a boat, but I couldn't justify it's use on only a few weekends per year. Couldn't get it past the wife either. I did convince her to let me buy a another car because I was putting alot of miles on my 03 Durango (12 mpg). I've always wanted a convertible since I used to "borrow" my sisters 69 Cutlass convertible when I was a teen, so begins my search.
I looked at a bunch of cars like late 80's BMW converts, Mustang GTs, and such but they were either too expensive or beat. It was then that I found a 93 white Capri in good shape that was owned by a responsible adult. When I compared it to the Mustang GT cv, it was cheaper to buy and got better gas mileage. It's also a kick to drive a manual again. Not a fast as the GT(not even close), the parts can be a little tricky to find, but I find myself wanting to drive it over my truck, even in the winter (I put my hardtop on).
There is still a few things that I want to do with it. Replacing the geometric wheels with something a little more masculine is currently tops. I will replace my softop this spring and reshoot my hardtop to match my car(red hardtop on a white car, the wife calls it my CANDYCANE). I'll post some pictures as soon as I can get my wheels and top replaced.

OK yea, I felt bad since I have been a member for a long time and (73rd I think) with over 100 posts or something and I never introduced myself.  I'm from Omaha, NE and bought my first 91 NA back when I was a senior in highschool (2000).  I just fell in love with that thing at first sight.  So began the saga.  I now also own a 93 XR2 with a hardtop which I love dearly although it's not as pretty as my NA as far as aethetics (did I spell that right?)  The 91 has about 80k and is near perfect.  The 93 XR2 has about 125k.  I also own an 86 Saab 900 Turbo, which is why I think I wanted an XR2 so bad, I love turbos.  For a daily driver and for long out of town trips I have a 2001 Galant.

Dennis here.  24 hours before I bought my 1991 Capri N/A I had no idea what they looked liked and didn't even know there was a 1991 Mercury Capri.  I was driving along and saw it on the side of the road with a for sale sign on it.  I took it for a test drive and bought it a few hours later.  Even though I knew nothing about Capris the price was right and it was a convertible.  I figured I could resell it after fixing it up if I didn't like it.  It didn't take long before I learned how much fun it was to drive and my wife loved it also.  Over the last ten years I have onwned or driven (as rentals) 10 to 15 cars including a 2002 Mercedes.      Only the Capri is fun to drive.  The other cars may be nice but the Capri is fun!  My next two projects are a new exhaust system and a paint job for the wheels.  The front rotors are warped and the windshield is craked so eventually I'll fix those also.

Hello all

Mark here from Clemmons, North Carolina USA with a 1991 indigo blue XR2 with 130k miles.  Totally stock, with a hard top, front mask, and tonneau cover.  Custom dent in front bumper  :(  Plan to fix some day.

Wife purchased new back in '92.  I adopted it after our marriage, but have grown to love it as my own  (http://graemlins/big-smile.gif)

I enjoy it because it's fun, it's a unique head-turner, and chicks dig it, er, my wife digs it.

Money-no-object car?  2005 Ford GT

If they made the Capri again?  I wouldn't change much - keep it light and affordable. Give it some Clubsprint-like styling. Update the interior styling.  A bit more power, nothing extreme.  An AWD option ala 323gtx would be slick too.

cheers,
Mark

Hi all. I'm Damien, and i'm proud to be representing the capri in San Antonio, Texas. I came about my 93 N/A totally by accident, literally. I was headed to the first day school for the spring semester in my much beloved 00' Nissan Sentra while it was raining & i had an accident (to make things worse it was my birthday). i needed a new car quick and cheap so i looked in a used car magazine and spotted the capri. Had no idea the car existed and the picture was terrible, but it was within price range ($1,600 total) so i went and bought it. It was in terrible shape, but with lots of love (and a little $$) it now looks awesome. Also drives great. I'll post pic's when i'm done fixing it up.

I needed a reliable car to get me to work and school, so I bought my grandpas old capri off of him.

If money were no object, I'd get a Lotus Elise in a second. Smaller than my little car but with a hell of a lot more balls.

I'm pretty happy with the capri the way it is. I'd want a better air intake system, headlights that don't quit on you, and either all or rear wheel drive. Maybe a less 80's sports car look. Even if they didn't change anything I'd buy one.

And in response to your email, a Capri meet would be cool.  In fact, if you check the car show section, you will see that the largest Capri meet in North America is happening on August 28th not more than a couple hours drive from you (Freeport, IL).  Also, in the gallery section, there are pictures of last years meet, with 3 of my capri's pictured!!

Thanks Russ,  and we'll see if my problem can be solved....  Here's my issue.   I have a 93 auto, Starts with starter fluid and runs, is seems to miss sometimes, and when it's at an idol, that miss kills it. Also, the "manual shift" light keeps flashing for awhile,  then it stops.

What I've done... Changed the rotor, cap, plugs, wires.... changed the TPS, changed this little canister that keeps making a clicking noise that's on the ps of the engine by the intake.

Last time I noticed the manual shift light flashing,  i was able to get it to stop by cleaning the battery cable (wierd thing is that the car was getting power before the cleaning but I guess it wasn't good power)

Please let me know what else I should try.  At this rate it'll be cold out before I get to drive it.

I'm Alejandra, from SoCal, I got mine as a gift on Sept 2002, my first car and since it was a gift better something than nothing at all.  I like he convertible part or it.  My dream car is a BMW series 3 (as to the engine and stuff, something fast, yet classy and cute) I want to restore my car (once I start earning good money) and make it pink.  The Capri is cute (I guess that makes it sissier) but i would change the pointy nose, and would put in a back seat that fits someone other than dogs, little children or midgets!

Hey Anthony, watch yo mouth, lol.
BTW, there was a special "pink panther" edition challenger, the color released in conjunction with the old pink panther movie series with Peter Sellers.
And there was the ole pink cadillac that appeared in several movies. Not to mention the pink cadillac made famous in the aretha franklin song, driving down the freeeeeeeeeway in a pink cadillac.

My name's Eric and I live in Eagleville TN, a small town south of Nashville. I was given my 1991 red XR-2 by my grandparents last summer. I love that it's a convertibal, quick, has excellent handling, and is not very common. My dream car would be a brand new BMW M3, manual trans, fully loaded, black. I'd like the new Capri to be 2 door, retractable hard top, rear wheel drive, V6 or V8, maybe simmilar in looks to the 91-94's.

That was my personal favorite."

Reason for buying: I guess it would be the low production numbers, I have a 93 NA,  I have owned a 69 MGC also, six cylinder MGB.

Dream car: I would love something with umph...Say a Twin turbo 300zx

Return of the Capri: Well if we can get support for it, lets rock. I hate going to the Merc dealer and having people roll their eyes. Mazda people try to help at least.

My name is Kayla, and I have a 1991 Capri, with the turbo.
I'm located in Northern NJ. (Sussux/Morris/Passaic county, Oakridge) And yes I am cinsidered to be in all 3 counties. (lol)

I decided to get my capri because my thunnderbird had a cracked head, and boom went the motor  (http://graemlins/big-down.gif)   But, I'm happy with this car, and I am a t-bird lover, as well as a Capri lover now!  ;)

What I love most about my capri is the fact that it is a maual trnasmission, and I have control over my RPMs and when I want to shift. I love my turbo alot tho, I must confess. The lag kills me, but that added power can be such a rush! (especially when you're racen a hot guy)   (http://graemlins/blush.gif)

If money were no object, the first car I would want... a McLearn F1!!!!!!!! DuH!!!!!!! After that tho, I would want an Aston Martin Vanquish.... I've never seen anything so sexy before. Who knows, maybe a Bughatti!

I'm Harry
from a suburb of kansas city
am starting my quest for the capri i have wanted since 93.
am stuck with an suv that i hate right now.
if money was no object i would have a collection of all the quirky and under apriciated cars that i tend to fall in love with. and a very large garage for them all.
i think the new capri should stay true to form-
base it on the focus and give it 165 hp standard and 210 in xr2 form. it would be a bargin basement audi TT. and tuners would love the focus base--so many parts available.

In answer to the original question:-
1) Cliff
2) London, England
3) Wanted a Mercury Capri since early nineties and could not believe that one was in this country, albeit from Australia not USA, and up for grabs on on UK Ebay. Bought it instantly and having more fun driving than ever before.
4) Lexus Soarer Supercharged (see www.toyotaimportsforum.com (http://www.toyotaimportsforum.com) ) and look for Smiffie's Loaded Soarer
5) New Capri - make the parts more available in the UK and a electric soft top would be great for the children  ;)

Hey,

This is James Blakeney II from Concord, NC.

The reason I bought my NA '94 Capri was because I was looking for a second car back in Feb '96.  I was driving a '90 Mustang GT at the time and my dad encourage me to look around.  I will to Charlotte on one of my days off and ended up stopping at the CHRYSLER dealership.  This particular Capri was parked in the used car lot beside a '94 PLY. LASER.  Test drove the car with the top down and was sold.  Dealer let me drive the car for the next days as the financing was being prepared.

My dream car or cars are the new Ford GT, 911 Turbo, and a 69 or 70 Boss Mustang 429(collector car).

This is my 2 cents.

If you think $250 is a good deal.  I  received my first capri in exchange for a broken laptop that I got for free from work (needed new top and windshield). I then drove the capri around for awhile at $.40 per mile for work. After about 2 months it wouldn't start.  So I kicked it a few times and bought my red one for $500 on ebay. Did some part swaping and now I have a great runner that looks pretty good too.  I've sold some of the other parts off of my first one so the total invested in the 2 cars....-$20.

A capris worth...  ...? Damn... ...the radio in my mustang is worth more than that!

Still, I say we got jipped. Ours needed a new top and the windsheild was cracked. Infact, when we bought the car, we coldnt even start it! The dealership was closing, so they pushed it out onto the sidewalk, so that when we came back from autozone, we could do some maintence just to get it home. That was fun too... ...had to pull over several times because it had a cracked radiator too... ...and we thought $1000 was a good deal. That car was totaled before we even got it. ...but its a show winner?

I'm Dusty AKA Oldiron

I just bought a 91 Capri. Prety vanilla, no tubro, automatic. Car has a new top and tires, a few parking lot dings, & oxidized white paint.
Car belonged to a motorcycle buddy of my wife and she wanted it out of the garage where it had been spending most of it's time for the last few years. My old Cadilac Eldo has bit the dust and I wanted something that wouldn't eat me alive in gas.

I own two Harleys, a Chevy K20 PU,with a third Harley and another Eldo for the Ol-Ball-N-Chain.

I was trained as an auto mechanic 1000 years back, got out of that bussness and into electronics when they started putting wires into carbs and exaust manifolds. Still fiddle with Hot Rods & Bikes.

I am an administrator on another board that uses this same software so I might be asking a few questions of the bosses on this site about the computer end of things.

I'm still looking for a Triumph Spitfire 73-76. Chrome bumper 1500 if there are any Spitfire fanatics in the bunch.

Smurfette's Story:

My name is TJ, and I never thought I would be on a Capri Board...  well that's not entirely true.  I never thought I would be on a 91-94 Capri Board.  I always LOVED the ASC/McLaren Capris, always wanted a white one.  Never could afford it though.  Whenever I saw 91-94 Capris, I thought 'that's not a real Capri'.  Boy has my mind been changed.

About a month ago I had a friend who got stuck in a rainstorm on his motorcycle.  I went to get get him.  When we went back to get the bike after the storm, we took a different route home.  On the way home I saw a blue Capri sitting on someone's lawn with a $200.00 price tag on it.  I thought, well I could probably part it out for that price.  I called, and went to look at it.  It actually ran, quite good in fact.  It was Stratosphere Blue with a Hardtop, White Tonneau Cover that looked BRAND NEW, and the Hardtop Cart.  I test drove it and fell in love with it.  The guy said it had an engine knock and a cracked exhaust manifold.  I said SOLD for $200.00.

I got it home, and the 'cracked manifold' turned out to be a gasket which I bought from Mid-County Mustang (they are less than an hour from me).  The 'engine knock' turned out to be a LOOSE WHEEL (all 4 lugs were loose).  I got it PA State and Emission Inspected, all it needed was a Headlight, and a License Plate Bulb.

I sold the Tonneau Cover and got enough to pay for the car.  Then today I just sold the HardTop for another $400.00 and some parts.  So basically I've MADE at least $400.00 off this car, and I have am HOOKED ON IT!!!

Now my friend loved it so much, he had to have one.  He bought one on eBay and I drove him to NJ to pick it up on Monday.  On the way down, I saw a Black 93 sitting on the side of the road with a rear spoiler (aftermarket) and a hardtop.  There were no plates on the car.  I stopped and asked about it, and the guy sold it to me for $300.00.  I got it home, and sold THAT HardTop for $400.00, so that car has paid for itself.  I really dont know what is wrong with that one yet, other than the guy said it overheated (and it has an automatic...lol).

So in conclusion (lol) we have gone from not liking them to owning 3 within like 3 weeks!!  These little cars ROCK!!

Oh, btw in case you are wondering my friend spent $2,000.00 for his red 93, but it is in  GREAT SHAPE!!

And one more thing, the reason I titled this Smurfette's Story, my brother-in-law nicknamed the car!!  I think it was the pink Capri Script on the seats...lol!!

Smurfette, thats cute and appropriate. My husband likes to name his cars with girl names. Sorta a gone in 60 thing. He named ours Misty. Hopefully he wont read this, but I think its short for "mistake."   :D   Or maybe it was because of all that white smoke.

Man, $200? Ours was $1000, and it wouldnt even start! I told my husband that we should test drive it, but nooo!

As for owning 3, a lot of people on this board own several too. And thats awesome being so close to midco!

I made a thread a while back about some dealer selling a capri for over 4 grand. I guess he sold it, because I dont see it anymore, even though I still see his other cars that have been on the lot for years.

4. Mustang Cobra Convertible
5. Price to be $2500 or less (lol)

Just got my Capri last week and paid 10 times more than Smurfette.  I wouldn't of considered this car until TJ bought his for $200.

Even though it is not a Turbo, it is a lot faster than the 4cyl, 5spd Mustang LX convertible I had a few years ago.

This is the best site I've seen so far related to Capri's.  Keep up the good work!

Car: 93 N/A Automatic with 72,000 miles.

Bought it because I have always been looking for a convertible.  When I first saw it with a sign on it, I though "too small, I need something like a Sebring Cruiser" but then I drove it.  What a cool little car!  My dad had a 1976 Fiat Spider and this car brought me back to those days of a 6-year-old going for an ice cream with dad on a cool summer evening with the top down.

Now I get to be the dad that is taking my kids for ice cream in the convertible.

I have a couple of questions on the automatic, though and will post in the correct forum.

I LOVE THIS LITTLE CAR!!!  What a blast to run her up to 6g's on the Tach...  COOL DADDY!!!!

I live in keller. It's red. Unfortunately I just fried my engine   (http://graemlins/oops.gif)   The bushing in the top half of the number 4 rod melted and made a mess. I have to figure out now if I can just fix that for now or not. If not I'm going to rebuild it with carrilo rods and wiseco pistons. 1/4lb lighter per cylinder   :D   Anyways yeah once I get mine up and running again we should go cruise somewhere flower mound isn't that far.

Me and Richter both were curious as to how a capri would do on an autocross course. Being a FWD small lightweight car, given the driver, we believe it would make my mustang look like $h!t. Maybe someday we could meet up at an SCCA event, as we dont street race because not only is it illegal and unsafe, but whats the fun in driving in a straight line? Their next event is Nov 20th in Bedford. But it may be too cold for me. They race there, as well as at Texas Motor Speedway, which would be a great location for you.

Why the Capri - My old Saab would've cost too much to fix, and the Capri was looking good at 2100
Dream car - pimped out xr2...lambo doors, neon interior panels, better looking rear end, Georgio's kit...the works
New capri - An actual 2-seater, rear wheel drive, soft top (retractable hardtop might make the car bigger   ;)  )

I just moved from princeton about a month ago... a little hick town east of mckinney. Thats interesting though do you have a link to any such events? I'm not sure I would want my capri in a race with lots of other drives around. Too much chance of it getting crunched.

3.  I bought it cause of the convertible top, front-wheel drive and gas mileage plus it reminded me of my 66 Triumph TR-4A IRS (nobody knows the troubles I've seen!).  It also has a lot of space for a car of its size and its fun to drive. Mine is Stratosphere Blue, although the previous owner referred to it as Columbia Blue.

4.  1963 Malibu Blue Vette roadster with full hybrid conversion.

5.  Yes I would want a Capri if they started over.  I'd want a soft top you could reach behind you and pull up - that's how it was with the Triumph.

I was driving for a freind that has a used car lot and he got 5 cars from a new car dealer to send to auction for a quick buck. The Capri was the last to go and I drove it about 2 miles and thought it ran fairly well. The r/f tire only had about 10lbs of air so the car pulled right bad. When we got back to the lot I asked if I could air up the tires and take the car out for a ride.
After I got on the road the car was running strong and I thought about how much I would offer my friend for it.$ 500.00 seemed to be a fair price so upon returning I offered him the 500. He pulled a paper out of his pocket and says I paid 400 so that's what you will pay... SOLD!!! and here I am on the Capri boards learning the ins and outs of this fun little car. I have ordered a top and window switches so far and I buffed the oxidized red paint. THE CAR PASSED INSPECTION WITH ONE REPLACEMENT PLATE LIGHT BULB. NOT BAD FOR 400 BUCKS.

Hello, I joined this site about a week ago and asked about my stick sinking.  Anyway, I ordered the parts as suggested and should receive them tomorrow.  Thank you.

I purchased my '91 Capri XR2 on February 1991 from a dealer in Redwood City, California because we had a new baby and there was really no place to strap his seat in the '65 Tiger I drove, the Capri has a back seat suitable for a baby seat. I moved to Lafayette, Indiana and had the car transported to me here in 2002.  Haven't done much to the car except for the HKS variable wastegate, HKS fuel management computer and the exhaust that goes with the set-up.  I tried to get all the parts that an article about Rod Millen's Capri discussed.  I think this is a great site, and plan to spend a lot of time here learning about the Capri.

My name is michael

i live in north carolina (in the mountains)

i bought my capri because my altima was about dead and i was sick to death of sedans! i wanted something 2 door, and turbo, i had tunnel vision on that. any way after i test drove the xr2 i fell in love, dont get me wrong there are some problems with the car (pasanger window motor burned, no fuel gage, hard top only, other gages inaccurate, etc.)but with a little cleaning and some regular mantinece she came to life! and i did not know it was convertible untill i bought it. i like that nobody but me & my wife can drive this car because of its small size.

money no object? mmmmmm, you might think im stupid but, a Delorian.

if the capri was to come back it would have to have a bigger back seat for one and definitely awd
turbo option still needs hard top option for all models

Carl here from Seattle Washington.  I have wanted one of these capris since 1990.  I had a cousin living in Australia who sent me pics of his.  I got side tracked into early 50's MGs for my convertible fix.  I have been burried in large, formal, leaky, British sedans for the past ten years and had completely forgotten about AU Capris.  This past July I started looking for another small convertible for errands and sunny days.  I came across my 91N/A at a local dealer.  They were dreaming at their original March asking price of $5995.  After 2 weeks of negotiating and nit picking I picked her up for $2000.  At only 72K miles I couldn't say no.  Especially since the old Motorola car phone still works! I have another six or seven hundred in toys and maintenance into her and am having a ball.  I also love that the softtop is stowed so you don't have to get caught in the rain without the hardtop.  At risk of making everyone here kringe and never speak to me, I rebadged the car as a Maserati.  Several folks said it reminded them of my old Spyder, just smaller. Hey, it's just a toy car and strictly for fun.  I already have my dream car.  She is a 1979 Silver Wraith II Aniversary addition.  SHe is one of only 25 made.  Neddless to say, the Capri is alot cheaper in the parts department!   As far as "new" Capris I actually like the concept pictures on the net for the 2007 Capri.  Now if they could keep the 70's styling and make it a retractible hardtop I'd be in line!

5. Honestly anything newer than 1990's sucks, all the cars have some weird rounded off generic look to them. If I could have improved the Capri XR2 I would have sprayed them with some type of rust preventer from the factory, and I would have gave them a regular roof or hard top convertable that was offered, no soft top. Engine wise I would have given it either a 1.8 or 2.0 liter inline 4 with a intercooled turbo option as we already had. I wouldn't do to much but basically make the engine .2-.4 liters more displacement and made it lighter.

3.Bang for the buck - turbocharged B6T engine, the XR2 is relatively hoppable like many factory turbos, lighter and more plentiful than the 323 gtx + a drop top, vestigel back seat gets the wife's thumbs up since it means I can still haul the kids to school - and they don't even complain when the top's down!
4. The Porche 917K that Steve McQueen drove in the movie "Lemans" (you said money's no object...)
5. I would be afraid that it would be wrecked if they did make a new one.  I think it's damn near spot on for me.  The weight isn't bad considering the content and the fact that we now live in a world of 3000 pound Minis.  I would like a more efficient turbo with a ball bearing cartridge, a more efficient intercooler, the same engine displacement (cheap on gas), better spark control, a bit more tire, and a bit less cheap plastic in the interior.  Except for the interior bits, those are all things end users can modify on the existing XR2s.

3) My grandpa bought a '91 XR2 Turbo new as a retirement gift to himself. About 4 years ago it died on him and has sat dormant in his garage ever since. Now, I'm 16 and looking for a car to call my own, but my parents don't have much money. Therefore, fixing up the good ol' Capri has become my Spring Break project. I have a few things I like about the car. One is the headlights, another is the fact that it's a convertable, and the third would be that it's a stick.
4) At the moment there are a few cars that I like, but they aren't even expensive. the Ford Fusion has grown on me. I could always go for a Mustang too.
5) Make it reminicent of the Capri we all know and love. it would be cool to see something kind of "re-made" like the new Mustang.

4.1996 Nissan Skyline GT-R (thats right, an R32, not the R34)
5.What would I want a Capri to be if they start making it again? Hmm...well I think I would make it a sportier sports car lol.
Mechanical: Slightly more displacement, perhaps in the realms of 2.0L. 6 Speed transmission. run a compression of around 8:1 with a nice sleek Garrett ball-bearing turbo.   (http://graemlins/big-biggrin.gif)  also...because of my favorite style of driving...RWD!! yes...a ford 8.8 LSD sounds nice...and some nice big brakes  (http://smile.gif)  .
Appearance: I think the Clubsprint was just about perfect. Maybe a little more trim around the bottom. And an optional hard-top thats a bit more streamlined. I think the available model is a little too boxy for the shape of the car...reminds me too much of the early '90s cougar.

Figured its the clutch master cylinder, which im replacing in the morning. So you will likely be seeing it around soon.

1.  Isaac; '91 N/A
2.  Fort Wayne, IN
3.  I bought it because I wanted a car fast and it was a stick... the convertible part was only a bonus.
4.  I'd have to go with the Skyline GT-R R34 Vspec.  Yeah.
5.  I would like to see a Capri with a non-manual top, and maybe standard hardtop (retractable).  Definitely bigger engine, maybe a 3-3.5l v6?  Also would like to see it RWD with optional AWD (that would be cool).  Wow, that's a big dream.  Shorter headlights too (i.e. not so high from the driver's seat; more like the '90-93 Celica).

I would try to make the 2007 Capri Gathering but I need a new engine and have no money to fix it.  Makes me mad that it has caused me so much trouble ($600 just for brakes, and we did them ourselves!) in the four months I've had it.  But yeah, it's out for the count right now.

EDIT:  Also, either make the back seats bigger or forget them altogether...

4. O.S. Giken bored and stroked RB26 power S14 racecar.
5. It would have to be a 2-seater with some sort of stripped out base model with no power anything available.

3. My father has had a 91 Capri for about 9 years.  He was up from FL. visiting and we went to a junk yard to look for parts for his.  The guy sold me an automatic that he had in the back for 500 dollars.  A year later I had bought the 91 XR2 that I am now driving and sold my Dad the 92.  I have recently bought another 91 non-turbo that had an alternator problem.  I wanted the rims that it had on it.  I have since repaired it and I'm selling it to my neighbor.  I don't want to sell it but I need an automatic for 17 year old.  So if you have an automatic,  I might be interested.  My Dad has 7 of them now.  Two drivers and 5 parts cars.  So if you need something let me know and I will try and work something out for you.

4.Dream car,,,, It would have to be a Lamborghini

5.New Capri - Offer a retractable hard top with a bigger engine

I have a 93 Capri XR2 with about 80K on it. it was my car from high school but had been sitting in my garage for the last 4 years with the engine blown (thanks Dad)! I just finally replaced the engine in it just this last fall and I am trying to restore the car to better then before.

I race a 97 Mustang GT that if fairly heavily modded with over 140K (not acual miles which I will never know from the mods)

check both the cars out on cardomain!

thanks, Tim

Turbo or not turbo, that is the question.LOL-----. If you fill a need for a little spice in your Capri needs after a bit then start looking for a turbo car. Welcome aboard.  Gus.

New here.

Live on Long Island (E. Meadow) in NY.

Recently purchased a needy 1991 Capri. Looking forward to getting it on the road, soon as weather gets a little nicer here. Been an avid sports car nut for a loooong time. I have owned over 30 roadsters in my life... mostly British. Currently have three MGs: 1 Midget and 2 MGBs. Got the Capri for those days when I don't feel like shifting and/or when I think we may want some A/C.

Early Capri ownership observation is that parts are pricier than MG parts are and not as readily available BUT I'm still feeling my way around the Capri market place.

I joined this site a little while ago now but only made my first post a couple of days ago, so I better introduce myself:

Name:  Rick

Location:  Just outside Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

Why a Capri?  The missus previously owned one (first model turbo) but we were forced to sell her a few years ago. I recently talked her into getting another one for US to use  (http://smile.gif)   A red 1990 turbo. Love the zip and the fact that its a convertible - not many convertibles in Australia despite our perfect climate.

Dream Car: Holden HT 350 Monaro - Aussie '70's muscle car

If they were making Capris again - hardtop standard, airbags for Aussie market, cup holders on all models! rear wheel drive or 4 wheel drive for turbo models.

Got a link for this site from another Australian Capri site   (http://smile.gif)

best carbon fiber in the world.

I have a 92 n/a I bought it cause it was cheap and I love the
car and that it is a convertible is real great but when I was passed going
around a corner by a beat up Pinto I realized the need for speed. I am
going to try to integrate a 91 turbo into my 92...

My dream car is easy. My Capri with a High Output motor cleaned up
with a sweet paint job. Or a 94 Capri RX2. And I have my Dream Truck.

I've seen pictures of what the new Capri may look like and it should be
great as long as the car has at least 300 Hp and still a convertible....

The Capri was actually mum's car which she bought new in 1990. She didn't drive it too often after I lowered it...
I don't have a favorite car, I think all cars have their pitfalls aswell as outstanding characteristics that's probably why I can't bare to see my car driven by anyone else.
Only wished the Capri was rear wheel drive.

whats up , my name is Joe Cote im 29 and i live in Lexington Kentucky.

back in 06, i was working as a mechanic at charlies foreign car service here in downtown lexington. a young woman had brought the 91 cardinal red capri xr2 in for service.
as i had it on the rack . i looked it all over and it was just a clean little car. not a spec of rust. as i lowered it down from changing the oil i hoped in it to fill out the oil change sticker 72,000 miles. i gasped.. this is mine i said to myself...later on she came to pick the car up. i gave her my # and told her id give her good money when she was ready to sell it ..she paid the bill and went allong without another thought.....fast forward 9 months....summer 07 i get a phone call. its her wanting to sell the capri...i ended up buying a 91 capri xr2 with 76,000 and a new soft top for 1800.00 cash....
true story, cool huh.
i actually bought the car to turbo the crap out of, and crush some junk in drop top style...
i wanted the sheer originality of it, and the b6t engine had history of good power and torque
as we put one in a festiva less than a year earlier.. so i went with it, and started to modify ..i now have 5,800.00 invested, am on 2nd engine, (blew the b6t with 20psi on the
vj-14/vj11 hybrid turbo, corksport ecu and downpipe, stock injectors, it took it for 3 months, and somewhere in the 3rd month a street race with a mustang killed it.. soooo

a guy on ebay has a pile of 91 n/a capri shortblocks from ford brand new covered in cosmaline...i bought one for 325.00 and 150.00 to freight it here. mated it to a b6t head and cams distributor the whole 9 to make a high compression b6t
yea im glad i did that.. the car screams.
gave it so much more low end and. you thought that tiny snail spooled quick before. can you say supercharger.
since i figure it was lean at 20 psi, that killed the first one.
i bought an AEM uego and a set of DSM 450 cc injectors on 18 psi the car makes way more power than the b6t did at 20 psi....and im running an extremely rich 11.4 AFR if i were to lean it out just a touch into the 12s AFR i have no doubt this car will put down 180 whp and snap off a 1/4 in the mid to low 13s...
not done yet.. i bought a mitsubishi tdo5h-14b from a friends talon, and had a b6t mani flanged to fit the mitsu snail... not on yet, but this summer it will be ...undecited to cut my corksport downpipe and re flange it to fit the mitsu or build another downpipe for it...

my dream car is a saleen s7 twin turbo, but if i had money like that id R&D a car of my own...

if ford were smart they would reach into the mazda parts bin once aggain, and make a new capri based on the new 3 chassis, and with that wonderful little turbo disi 2.3, makin 280 hp.
let Italdesign guigiaro do it aggain. with the top, interior, and ghia shape of the sheetmetal.then after completion send it to tickford for finishing touches. before you send it to dealers.
like they should have. we would all be driving clubsprints !! not just xr2s..

but yea, sorry, but i had to let that all out. any questions just ask.. thares way too much done to my car to list...but i will tell you anything you ask about...be good and have fun
.............Joe Cote

Actually traded my full size GMC truck for it. wanted something fun
rx7 twin turbo is dream car owned one once but had to sell for money issues
future Capri dont thing i could see a v6 i mean the whole reason for the little car is to show that it dont have to be big so i think maybe just like a 2 somethin liter would be good but yah twin turbo would be sweet and i think if they make another the back seat would prob come out and a fold down hard top would be nice.

Hello all,
I'm Gene McManus, from Central Ohio. NHL fan (Blue Jackets), and a Buckeye.

I'm on my third Capri. The first, a red NA 1994 was bought new. I kept it about 10 years, and when it was getting long in the tooth, some 150,000 miles, I decided I liked it so well I bought another '94, this one reef green, with only 50,000 or so miles. Both were NA, 5-speeds. Sold both to buy a new Mini-Cooper in 2003.

My current Capri is a 1994 red automatic. The car has low miles (70,000), and is pretty nice. I'm not thrilled with the automatic, though. It's very sluggish compared with the 5-speed. One day, maybe I'll find a nice 5-speed, too. For now, this one will have to do.

If you'd asked me 20 or so years ago what I'd buy with unlimited bucks, I'd have gone for some exotic. I'm now 70 years old & a little more laid back, so I'm not sure what I'd go after. Certainly tamer than when I was younger. Maybe a really nice Morgan +4, say '62-'65. Never owned a Mog, and always look hard when I see one. Or maybe a mildly customized '56 Chevy convert. Something like that.

A new Capri? How about a modernized, updated example of the 1994? The soft top, optional hard top, a little more power, 6-speed gearbox. I'd sure go for it.

Hi Rocky, nice to hear from you. I intend to get to the MACG next year. Just got my "new" '94 a couple of weeks ago. If I'd have waited an additional week or so before committing to this buy, I'd have landed the reef green '94 XR2 that just sold out on the west coast. It had a "Buy it now" price of $5,500, and for that car, it would have been a good buy.

3.Why did you buy your Capri/323 and what do you like best about it?

I bought a "Ford 94' xr2 turbo" Because it was cheap and looked super badass!

4.If money were no object, what would your dream car be?

If money were no object id probably drive a different car every second week.

5.What would you want a Capri to be if they start making it again? (i.e. soft top, retractable hard top, engine, etc.)

A push button retractable roof would be great.

3.Why did you buy your Capri/323 and what do you like best about it?

I purchased my 91 Mercury Capri($900!) because I needed a new car. Sold my Datsun 280ZX in favor of an American car. Wanted a 2+2 5-speed with a hardtop(the 280ZX had leaky T-tops). Found a convertible with no leaks instead. My sister had a Capri, and I loved the look. Took it for a test drive and was hooked. I like the sporty, unique look, switches that are right where they should be, and fairly quality manufacture.

4.If money were no object, what would your dream car be?

I've test driven my dream car and had it yanked away from me. I want a 1977-79 Ford Thunderbird. V8 400 with an automatic(I'd prefer standard, but that wasn't an option). Power everything. Drove like a cloud, but lots of power. I want a huge American car, big as a boat that drinks gas like a frat boy drinks beer.

5.What would you want a Capri to be if they start making it again? (i.e. soft top, retractable hard top, engine, etc.)

I'd want a more powerful 4 cylinder under the hood for the cheaper model, and a turbo V6 under the hood for the Turbo model. 5-speed in both, automatic an option for both. For the turbo, a turbo transmission. Power convertible roof with an optional hard-top.

3. My dad and I bought a white 91 (auto) because it was cheap and looked cool. Since then, we have bought 3 more, swapped a manual tranny into mine and bought a hardtop for his red 92 (auto). Currently letting the silver 91 (N/A manual, engine and tranny gutted out) and the white 92 (auto, interior and windshield out) sit outside. I love the capris  ;) .

4. If they brought back the Capri, it should be a retractable hard top with the Ecoboost twin turbo (365 hp from the 2010 Ford Taurus SHO) and AWD. Coupe obviously.

Hello my name is Butch King. I live in Swannanoa NC just outside of Asheville. I was looking to find a replacement for my Acura that got totaled when a bozo ran a stop sign and t-boned me. My wife and I saw a Capri that was ragged out on a car lot but she fell in love with the cute little car. After a lot of searching I found a 92XR2 in Florida with 31000 miles. Flew down and bought it aand drove it back. The Acura was a daily driver for my wife and I to cut back on mileage on our other cars, but with this low a mileage we can't bring ourselves to drive the Capri more that once or twice a week. If I could have any car I would find another 70 GTO Judge like I had in high school. Never should have sold that car.

yes, please post a picture of the setup in this 164 db capri..

i would love to see it.

especially since i compete in dbdrag, have for over 8 years. i'm the team captain for maxxsonics. and i personally know every person in the country that does over a 160. and none of them own a capri.

where are you measuring.. in the port?

i'm sorry if i sound a little hostile.. but those of us that have broken the 160 mark, put a LOT of time and effort into doing so, and it makes me relaly mad when i see someone throw numbers out there that are not real.

you might as well come on here and say that you do 4 second quarter miles with your capri.

my most recent truck, that i retired and sold, was the national record holder in sm1-2. 2 18's 16 thousand watts. my enclosure was built from 57 2x4's, 36 2x3's 18 sheets of 3/4" mdf, 100 pounds of screws 12 gallons of wood glue, and 2000 pounds of concrete. to achieve a 160.0

i would be very interested in seeing how you managed a 164 legal at the dash in a capri... what equipment are you running? how are you managing to keep the pressure in, with a convertible?

inquiring minds want to know..

3.I stumbled across it on craiglist for a good price. worked a better deal and walked away with it.

4.i've always been a fan of small convertible. capri, miata, the new soltice/sky, etc...

5.the only thing i would like to see... is a capri similar to the ones they had in australia.. the front air dam, the rear lights and bumper, the air damn over the rear seat area. maybe some smoother more flowing curves, like the new saturn skys and current miatas.

my apologies for the hostile post above. let me formally introduce myself.

i'm jay. 38 years old, and a single dad.

i jsut recently sold my truck and was looking on craiglist for a new car. came across an ad for a 91 capri for 1700.

i went and checked it out, as i've always liked small convertibles.

it has some rust in the quarters, and the brakes were horrible. i knew i was in for new rotors and pads, and possibly bearings.  i offered 13 as a result. they countered with 1400.

then i turned the lights on.

only the pass side came up. the driver side did nothing. after like 30 seconds all of a sudden the driver side started to come up. veeeerrrryy slowly...

when i turned the lights off, same thing...

i told them that would definatley take some money to fix the lights.. so i recountered with 1000. !!

they countered back with 1100. and we closed the deal.  (http://smile.gif)

but anyway, back to me...

i own a pizza shop in toledo. and im building a custom chopper from the ground up during my free time, that i havent even thought about since getting my capri  (http://smile.gif)

as mentioned above, i compete in car stereo competitions. (for real) i'm the captain for a manufacturing team. i hold several different state and national records. my last truck, at its peak, was loudest in the country and 4th in the world for its class.

its unlikely the capri will get much of a system.. pointless for a convertible, since it cant adequately hold in pressure. but the back"seat" area will likely receive a pair of 8" subs and maybe a 2000 watt amp. i will certainly post pictures when that happens.

other interesting fact about me.. i play violin. my daughter is the true musician. she is 14 and has been playing since she was 6. i took up lessons about 2 years ago, just to be able to play with her and know what shes doing right or wrong. im no musician though. she is in our city junior youth orchestra, as well as first chair in her school orchestra, she is also a memberof the all city orchestra, and honors orchestra.

she can get her license in a year.. and she has already informed me that when that time comes, she gets the capri  (http://smile.gif)  lol

Name is Christian. I just bought a Red 1993 Mercury Capri Automatic. Bought it with 132,000 miles on it for $1300. I like about my car it's real good on gas, slow so I don't get speeding tickets, I get alot of curious people on what my car is, I don't like that has seats in the back, theres no room for people so theres no point on making it a 4 seater. My dream car would be a nice Ferrari Modana. I think there sexy.

hello, name is dave and I live in DC. Mom had a 92 capri and I loved the thing.
When I needed a replacement after moving back home I found my 91 xr2 on craigslist for 700(needed love but had no rust).
Dream car is a bit hard to anwser since I like to modify things but I would have to go with the old 944 turbo's.
My idea of a new capri would be a nice hardtop convertible with pop-ups and dohc v6(direct injection would be nice)

Hello everyone.
My name is Glenn, i'm retired from the AF and own my own hobby shop in NC.
Goldsboro, NC-- about 50 miles south of Raleigh.
Never seen or heard of these before. Don't know what planet i was on during 91-94 but when i saw one for sale in Chapel Hill it struck me as ugly/cute lol. Bought it for $1500, 91 NA. Heard about the turbo version later and started looking for one. Found one (92) in my own home town. Great shape but being a perfectionist i had to have new paint and top right away.
Dream car is a 69 Hemi Cuda. Still holds national record since 1968 in SS/A and AA
I would like to see a new capri with turbo V6 and rear wheel drive.
High performance version would be twin turbo. lol.
Great forum and a ball to read.

Hello, Rob from Colorado Springs. Bought it since I was forced to
sell another car to
raise cash & everthing out there cheap was junk needing more than I
could do. I like Craigslist ads that say "was running great until". I love turbos but don't know a lot yet. Never heard
of XR2's but if they built one today they need to do what everybody is doing on this forum-needs
wheelwell clearance, bigger turbos, 2.0 ish engine.
Dream car is tough. Mclaren F1 would scare me nicely. But there's a ton I could go for. In school for RN but "kinda" old @ my age. Gotta die feeling worthwhile in this life.

3.Why did you buy your Capri/323 and what do you like best about it?

I bought the Capri because we only had one vehicle and my wife was stuck at home all day. I needed a daily driver that got good mileage due to working over 30 miles away at Scott Air Force Base. I had not seen a Capri since my first tour in the Army, so was intrigued when I saw this one on Craigslist.

4.If money were no object, what would your dream car be?

I don't really have a dream car. Just something I don't have to worry about and is paid for!

5.What would you want a Capri to be if they start making it again? (i.e. soft top, retractable hard top, engine, etc.)

I would definitely want a power soft top and maybe lose the back seat. I mean what's it there for anyway? LOL I think I read somewhere they only put it in there because us crazy Americans wanted a place to stick the rug rats!

91 Capri XR2 and 92 n/a
Both of these capris were purchased by my mom, who in the midst of a mid-life crisis, wanted to buy the closest thing to her dream car (triumph/mg/spitfire) and she bought the 92 auto n/a. She fell completely, it even had a huge ass cell phone built into it, he he, but at the time (around 94 I think, we were all pretty impressed) couldn't tell her sh*t! Then she bought the 91 XR2 thinking that she could use it for parts, lol, not really. I ended up driving the XR2 (she couldn't drive it cuz it was a 5-speed) after I got out of the Army and divorced while I went to college. I loved it, XR2, hardtop, nice! Anyways, I ended up buying them both from her a few years ago when she got a Saab turbo convertible. Dream car, hmmm, probably a 300ZX twin turbo, but there are others also.

I was afraid someone was going to say that (second Canadian thing).  Is this really going to screw up the meet?  Have to redesign the button and add a Canadian flag?  Yes, we will be there barring major catastrophe.

Long story short I was looking for a fun summer ride for my bride and darn near fell off my chair when I saw a 1993 Capri advertised within a couple of hours drive of our home. I can only recall seeing two in Canada in the past 20 years.  Bought it sight unseen, anticipating a project, from a couple transferring from Ontario to the west coast who couldn't take it with them. Couldn't be happier. Solid body, great mechanical, 106k.  Needs a little paint and a bit of cosmetics and new struts.

Went through the safety check in a breeze.  Now the big deal is going to be the emission test(the one surfmut's little bronze job failed..have been doing a little reading here) next week. This one passed two years ago.

Speaking of surfmut, haven't seen any recent posts from him and would like to make contact.  Sent him a PM but no response yet.

Hi All! Just picked up a 91 XR2 with 109,000 miles on it. Its my first non hand me down car...and i paid for it myself! lol So far I'm in love with my capri...looking forward to getting to meet you all!

Name: Ben

Location: Edwardsville, Illinois

Why did you buy your Capri/323 and what do you like best about it?
It was parked in a front yard with a big FOR SALE sign on the way to my college. I decided to give it a look and instantly wanted it...turbo, convertible, manual trans, and in great shape...yes please! I love that its sort of an "oddball" car, it gives it more character.

If money were no object, what would your dream car be?
a 70's Saab sonett III

What would you want a Capri to be if they start making it again? (i.e. soft top, retractable hard top, engine, etc.
Hmmm I'd say a more resilient interior overall, cup holders, retractable hardtop, 6 speed trans, and FR please!

Russ- I actually got your card from your girlfriend. I go to that Thorntons often. I just moved out of McHenry, which is one of the reasons I bought the capri. But I visit family often...Ill be sure to let you know when I'm in the area... I'm looking for new rims and 94 tail lights at the moment... Also I love that blue capri...I stepped next to it to look inside and it beeped at me. Scared the c*@p outta me.

I'm out of decent 94 tails at the moment, but I'm working on getting more.Same with aftermarket rims. Feel free to check up and see if I have any later....
If you are in Edwardsville, I'll be down in St. Louis this weekend. If you need any parts delivered, let me know!

Wow I wish I wasnt dirt poor at the moment. lol I'm still trying to find work down here... But we will be in touch. I've been reading in the forums that fitting 17" rims can cause extra stress on wheel bearings, what do you have on the blue capri??

17's! I have 1/2" spacers in the back to clear the spring perch, but the fronts do not. No undo stress on the front bearings!

Hello everyone, I am glad to be here. I am from Pa and have a new 93 red Capri. The hubby also has a new 91 white Capri. It all started with the red 71 that I had in the past in 1973. I love that thing so this Spring he thought I needed some cheering up and wanted to buy me something. I quickly said convertible, red and little. WOW! He found just the thing. After we got it on the road he decided that he liked it and needed one also, so here we are in just a few short weeks with his white 91.

They are such a special car I am glad he likes it as much as I do.

Hey everyone!  My name is Kevin. I live in Spokane Washington. If you don't know where that is it's on the opposite side of Washing State from Seattle.  Not too many convertibles up here because of our hard winters. Quite a few in Portland, OR or Cali.  I have been secretely admiring these little cars for about a year now and finally came accross a 1993 XR2 it has 85,000 original miles.  I bought it from the second owner who treated her very well. Came with the tauneu cover. I really wanted something sporty that got good milage, but I have kids so the fact that it has a back seat is a plus. I'll probably just drive her for awhile but I have big plans. I will re-paint her yellow cause this car screams for yellow! Would like ground effects and custom wheels.  My favorite car if I was rich: I would really like to own a Shelby Motersports Ultimate Aero! It is faster than Bugatti Veron and is made here in Washington State. If you havent seen one You tube it!  If they decided to make Capri's again a power top would be nice and just build the headlights into the front end instead of dealing with those cheesy motors up, down, up, down.

Also, check out the FaceBook groups if you haven't already. These cars are about as much fun as you can have in a car with your clothes on!

3.Why did you buy your Capri/323 and what do you like best about it? - Mid-life crisis. (hey, not much of one ... at least I'm not driving your daughter around in it  ;)   I know my wife is also darned happy about that :D ).

4.If money were no object, what would your dream car be? It would be driven by someone else - maybe with a Jacuzzi over the 4th/5th axles.  :D

5.What would you want a Capri to be if they start making it again? - Well, under $20K would be nice.  And a tad more headroom (I'm 74.5 inches tall, most of it in the torso).  200hp on a stock four-banger would also be awesome  :D

Gday folks.
New here, I'm from central Victoria, Australia.

I joined this site, after looking on internet for information about my new purchase, a 1989 SA? XR2
from what i can gather by reading, mine is pretty stock original.

I normally buy cars, just to fix them up and resell them, and that is what I originally brought my Capri for. It was parked in a local wrecking yard amongst other cars for sale. salesman gave me the ushall ""salesman talk"" about how good it is etc. Managed to bargain him to $1800aus dollars, no rego etc.. in glove-box was receipts for almost $5000aus spent on motor and drive shafts etc. I was driving it home, and remember thinking it went ok for a little 1.6litre.. then when the turbo kicked in I instantly decided to keep it (unless someone makes a real good offer on it)  (http://tongue.gif)
Typical issues it has is the windows wont come up,without a lot off assistance, the brake light stays on the dash, softop about buggared etc

Heya everyone my name is Dean and i bought my Capri about 3 years ago from my boss, the conversation went like this ."Hey Dean you want to buy a car?" I said "what is it?"He said "a 93 mercury capri convertable" well i had no clue what that was so i asked um how many miles where on it he said 35k well that turned my head i then asked how much he said i will give it to you for 1100 bucks , book value was higher then that, anyway i had no car at the time and really needed one i just said yes and he let me give him half then and after i paid the car off he gave it to me, i still had not even looked at the car, after i paid it off i was expecting a 1100 dollar car/nightmare , well to my surprise this car was looking really good,so i kept it and it fell apart on me after the first month brakes went and all parts with it it cost me 800 buCks to get that fixed, so after a couple of years i all of a sudden went into this mode of WOW THIS CAPRI HAS SOME MAJOR POTENTIAL!From there on i put my first Vinyl graphic sticker on the car and it said XT 2000 GT.Well that changed everything,i then decided that i wanted for Vinyl for my car because the car was to white i wanted to add black to it and give it more character, the car was all white it also had a white top , i used a vht vinyl spray to change it from white to black, i left some spots that i can fix but i have been lazy with it latley because of all of the engine problems i have been having. It has been really making me depressed.Anyway after that i got a brah(La Bra) for it and i loved it, from there on a grabbed some xxr's rims and some really nice tires went from 14' to 15 . that 1 inch really made a difference, after that i decided to use vht tint to blackout my headlights and my fog lights, lets not forget after i did the headlights i broke the passenger side headlight motor, dont ask it was a hot day heh,i then put vinyl stickers with the word turbo on it,i have a few more things to do with the exterior, spoiler, get that top up to my satisfaction, put my NOS sticker in the back of the rear plastic window, then after that i will be working on the interior, i actually took the backseat out and the passenger seat out, shame if i new of this site before i would have not thrown them away but oh well now i know.I am going to make the interior black and white race car style with bar and net all that jazz, anyway thats a little ways away.Anyway my pics of my car are on the forum where you put photo's, anyway it is nice to meet everyone and hope in the near future i will have time to maybe bring my car to meets and shows and take russ's trophy away from him,i am just joking russ please dont abuse me )) alright well met all hope to talk to you all soon ,

I'm Scott from Spring Hill Florida. I bought my 91 Automatic last October. I got it mostly to teach my Wife how to drive, but it sure is fun for me to drive too. I had to do some work on it and Russ already knows me from my parts orders. So far plugs, wires, cap, rotor air and gas filters. Replaced the drivers side window regulator, cleaned the window and mirror control switches. Replaced the washer tank and jets. Replaced the turn signal switch. Also replaced the top and glovebox latch. Installed the strut tower brace. Got all the lights working so it will pass inspection when the Wife takes her Driving test. Installed a nice Stereo with USB and SD card slots along with new speakers. Still need a little body work done, the heater door link is on order and the AC needs fixing. The car has 90K miles and runs pretty good. The Wife is doing good driving hope to get her license in a month or so. Our two Kids like the back seat so they can ride with us.
It would be nice if Ford came out with a new Capri maybe based on the Fiesta.

Scott

Hi all, my name is Roey and I live west of Brisbane in sunny Queensland, Australia.

I originally purchased our 1992 XR2 Ford Capri for our two daughters to learn to drive on but after I drove it myself, I absolutely loved it.  It is so easy to drive, has plenty of up and go and the fun factor it provides when you drive it is amazing. I'm on the lookout for a turbo version for myself
 :D
My dream car would have to be a Shelby Cobra 427.
If they start making them again, I would like a rear wheel version, 2 litre turbo and definitely motorised canopy (I ripped my back window when I was folding it down and dropped it a bit too hard into the cavity   )

3. It was there. I was looking for a summertime toy and checked out a Fiero GT, Miata, Del Sole and... wait for it... a Cutlass Convertble. The Capri won for lowest miles and fewest issues plus a hard top. Plus I've liked them from the beginning and have little chance of seeing myself coming.
4. Dream car? Don't have one. Have owned 50 or so cars and a few motorcycles in my time and the quickest ever was a '67 Downton Prepped 1275S Morris Mini Cooper, loud outrageous and unbelievably quick to 100 (4.55 straight cut gears, hill climber). Killed a whale tail Porsche with it once coming up hill through the sweeper on Glebe Road above Chain Bridge (DC folks know where I mean) when he swapped ends. Fastest? Either my 72 Torino Sport or 71 LTD with the same engine (took a while getting there but would bury the needle and then some if you had enough road).

Still a few on my bucket list (300C, D, E, F, G or Hurst but I doubt it)

%. Most fun? I think I may have just bought it.

Hi Everyone,

1. Name - Shane      (http://smile.gif)

2.Location - Picton, NSW Australia

3.Why did you buy your Capri/323 and what do you like best about it? - I originally bought my first Capri when i was growing up. It was a nice looking car originally had just the SOHC engine, so i bought a DOHC Turbo engine and did the conversion over a weekend. My first time at anything like it and it all went well. Only thing i had wrong was a few spark plug leads around the wrong way, and needed to adjust the timing. My original Capri can be found on the front page of my website:     http://myconvertiblecapri.com (http://myconvertiblecapri.com)

I ended up trading it in for a TT Supra which is no more and was really missing the Capri. After catching up with a few of the old club members over the past year. I'd been looking around for another one to buy and along came a 1992 Tickford SC Clubsprint which i picked up a few weekends ago. Again pics can be seen under the Gallery on my site  http://myconvertiblecapri.com/gallery/index.php?cat=10058 (http://myconvertiblecapri.com/gallery/index.php?cat=10058) .

4.If money were no object, what would your dream car be? Probably a highly modified TT Supra.

5.What would you want a Capri to be if they start making it again? - More power than stock perhaps 2L engine with bigger turbo. Pretty much just keep it the same tho fixing all the previous mistakes.      ;)

I've been here a little while, haven't posted much, just mostly read. I don't know a whole bunch about cars except trying a few things on my capris and reading the forums for a couple years. A few months ago I started my job as a helicopter electrician. I like exercise, whether it's running or lifting weights. One of these days I might make it to a capri meet.

1. Name
Jack

2. Location
Fayetteville, NC

3. Why did you buy your Capri/323 and what do you like best about it?
I bought my first capri because I rode in it and I liked the size, the speed, the feel, and the gas mileage. I've since sold that one for various reasons and now my situation is better so I got another one. This one I got from an older couple. It's modified and gets 20 lbs boost and has type r seat covers. Maybe someone from this forum had it at one point?

4. If money were no object, what would your dream car be?
I like the idea of rocketmans capri. The torque steer annoys me sometimes.

5. What would you want a Capri to be if they start making it again? (i.e. soft top, retractable hard top, engine, etc.)
AWD is the only thing.. a missile launcher might be cool too.... a train horn at the rear for people who want to drive up real close behind me. A megaphone could be fun. Real cup holders. Leather seats.

Bwahaha! LOL ... without being too politically incorrect, we need *all* that stuff, plus a mount for an M249...

*especially* the cupholders...

1.Name:  David

2.Location: West Virginia

3.Why did you buy your Capri/323 and what do you like best about it?  My first Capri was a trade for a 68 Mustang project I had. I initally turned my buddy down, but he had the Capri with him when my wife and I went to his house to look at a piece of furniture, and her exact words when she saw his car, shined up, top down, was "Uh...you need to rethink this..." so I did.  I traded, and when my buddy decided to sell the Mustang, I didn't want to see it go so I traded him back. Regretted it.  I just recently sold a '65 Fairlane and called a local guy that's known for having Capris.  He had his last one, a 94 XR, for sale and said he wanted $5,000. I told him I didn't have near that much, but told him I did have $3,000 cash and he said come get it!  The car is awesome.  I like how quick the car is, how well it handles, and of course I love the soft top. The car is simple, but has great options for the time period in which the car was made.

4.If money were no object, what would your dream car be? I'd buy a 1969 Mach I, 351 V8, grabber blue, 4-speed.

5.What would you want a Capri to be if they start making it again? (i.e. soft top, retractable hard top, engine, etc.)  Retractable hard top like the Mercedes Kompressor would be nice, however, I think it would need to be economical, but loaded with options like the original (for its time anyway).

Hello to all the capri fans out there,

MY name is John I'm from the land of enchantment (New Mexico, U.S.A) I hope everyone had a great Christmas and from me and my family we wish you a happy and of course safe Happy New Year!!!

I am the proud owner of a 1991 mercury capri xr2.  This car came to me to get repaired for a friend.  when I told him what it needed he decided to sell it and offered it to me for a great price.  Thinking it was an awesome opportunity to finally own my first turbo charged/vert I jumped at the chance. The car has taken up a lot of my time and money and after bout three years of ownership I have yet to drive it.  Russ, of Roo sports :) ( thank you Russ) has been awesome and invaluable in this quest as have all of you and this great forum.  You all sound like a great bunch of people with a whole lot of knowledge.  I really do appreciate all of you and the advice I get from this site.  My friend that sold this car to me served in Iraq with me passed away in a car accident bout a year after he sold me capri so it has a little more meaning to me than other cars or projects that keep me busy.

If the Capri were to come back, I would like nice leather seats with a more refined interior and of course a stronger engine with around 250 hp. from the factory with everything  it has now.  and it would be awesome if the top could be moved up or down with a touch of a button. Also would be great to  fix all the things that break easily like the door latches, handles and such.  Redesigned headlights might be nice along with the ability to use wider and taller tires without interference.  Factory Totico struts would be awesome, maybe they would be easier to find for our cars again.

If money were no object I would like a  new ls9 turbo vert. vet.  may as well dream big! ;D with all the options.

3. Why did you buy your Capri/323 and what do you like best about it?
Turbo goes whoosh, Lights go up, top goes down.

4. If money were no object, what would your dream car be?
Ultima GTR or a Merc-Mclaren SLR

5. What would you want a Capri to be if they start making it again?
Basically a sport-styled Fiesta St Convertible.

Since this is my first post, I should introduce myself. 34 yo, First Capri, Picking it up tomorrow, immaculate '91 Turbo(Sold as Ford Capri over here). Goal for the car is to drive it till the end of the year and then take it to the NZ B6T expert for 300Hp and a slightly more track oriented suspension/chassis setup. Probably with a Toyota gearbox and LSD.

Pics tomorrow when I get back from my 24 hours journey to pick it up.

I'm assuming you guys got them in NZ? I don't think I've seen any NZ members here. Sound like you are in the right place for your plans, Yota gearbox is serious.

Yeah we did. I paid $800NZ(About $600US) for mine, since they are not very common or well known, but there are plenty of them for sale. The people who buy them tend to be older and not really into cars, they just get them because MX-5/Eunos Roadster/Miata are too expensive, and they want some top down cruising, or just got mistaken and meant to buy the MX-5.

I have 2 BG8R 323's here, one with a spun bearing, Toyota e153 LSD box and Mitsubishi rear diff, and another with a perfect stock Engine, but decidedly subpar drivetrain, so I am thinking of parting them and selling the shells and interiors and anything that doesnt go into the Capri, and attempting a AWD swap like you did with a Built BPT. I will probably PM you at some point to find out more about how you did the rear of the car(diff mounts, did you just swap the subframe, etc).

I personally prefer the B6T to the BPT though, since I have had about 7 cars with B6Ts and know them really well. I have built several 250-300HP B6Ts and absolutely love how strong they are made, and how little work is required for a reliable 300HP with great economy.

One thing I am definitely going to do is extensive chassis stiffening, suspension and brakes. I like my cars to have a really stiff chassis, and I am not sure how good the Capris are in this regard. But more is always better I think. I am lucky in that there are literally 1000s of BF and BG awd and FWD turbo 323s in NZ, and parts for them are easy to come by.

My Capri has 95K Miles, and I am buying it from the 1st Owner, who got it when she was 56 and is no longer able to drive. I am not even sure she was aware it was turbocharged, but I do know that it has been serviced by Ford at the dealership she bought it from the whole time. I feel slightly bad getting it so cheap, since her son is the one who is selling it for her, and he took some absolutely awful pictures of it, the shot of the exterior is one that showed the only external damage to the paint on the spoiler, and everyone bidding on the auction mistook it for rust and didn't bid. I had a friend of mine go look at it for me and he reported it as being near perfect condition.

Greetings, I bought my Capri Wednesday and haven't picked it up yet.  It isn't running and I hope I can get some help from the forum.

1.Jack Byrd

2.Mount Airy(Mayberry), NC

3.First became interested in Capri though my interest in Festiva's(got Capri brakes for it) and it's springtime.  What better time to buy a convertible?

4.1957 Studebaker Hawk

5.As the 1.6 Capri engine seems to be a good engine for the Festiva, I'm guessing the Capri should have at least a 1.8L.

Currently, my car isn't running and I've already ordered a new fuel pump, however, there is blue wire with stripped insulation in the wiring harness right behind the battery that isn't attached to anything.  They are no blue wires anywhere in nearby plugs to attach it to.  Wonder if this could be a problem.

Thanks for your assistance and let me know if this isn't the appropriate place to ask the question,  Jack Byrd

3.Why did you buy your Capri/323 and what do you like best about it?
bc the opportunity occured, it was cheap (€500), and Saab Convertibles are too heavy to have as a 3rd/fun car. what i like: the uniqueness: there are only 68 of 'em in The Netherlands, of which i have one of the 3 reef green ones. i haven't driven it yet, because it failed the annual test on the exhaust fumes (CO was too high, so it needs a new catalyst)

4.If money were no object, what would your dream car be?
Citroën DS décapotable

DeLorean DMC12
(http://www.paulfrasercollectibles.com/upload/public/docimages/Image/w/y/f/delorean-dmc12-for-sale-1981-410.jpg)

i know, they're not very practical in daily use...

5.What would you want a Capri to be if they start making it again? (i.e. soft top, retractable hard top, engine, etc.)
maybe change the headlights, and put a more powerful yet fuel efficient engine in.

PResent for the wife's birthday - but really so we can tour the good parts of Oz; including the wineries around here and the Hunter Valley.
Why: The XR2 was in pretty good condition, pulls like a teenager and like most chicks looks good topless!
What do I like best about it: Chewing up the miles on the way to somewhere good - the trip is the destination.
If money were no object, what would your dream car be: Probably won't mean much unless your an Aussie - but a 1964 EH ute with 327 Chev to push her along.
If they made it again: 3 litre turbo, soft top with hard top conversion for winter, with somewhere to put the coffee.

I'll have to get a picture up later.

Cheers and Beers

I owned this car years ago. When I purchased it back then, there was impact damage to the left rear wing. I repaired the damage and had a cheap respray done.  I recently re-purchased the car and brought it into the USA. Paperwork was a nightmare with US customs.
It's a lot of fun, easy on fuel, fast. I get lots of compliments wherever I go.

3.Why did you buy your Capri/323 and what do you like best about it? - I had test driven one my senior year of high school (1991) and thought it would be a really fun car to own but refused to have a car payment.....I guess I waited long enough I didn't have to make payments when I bought the car for $2000  :)

4.If money were no object, what would your dream car be?  Tough call.....My friends laugh at me because I have made the statement that I would rather have 5 $5000 cars than one $25,000 car......I currently have ....
1966 Mustang that I bought when I was 16
1992 Mercury Capri xr2 (2 of them)(obviously or I wouldn't be here)
2001 Ford F250 Crew Cab Diesel 7.3L with a 6-speed manual
2002 Ford Excursion Diesel 7.3L (Wife's Grocery Getter)
2003 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor CNG
2006 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor
I guess with a gun to my head I would have to flip a coin between three opposites......
     a.    Factory Stock 1966 AC Cobra (low miles of course)
     b.    4x4 7.3L powered Sportsmobile
     c.     Diesel Pusher RV (maybe a mid-engine) Newmar All-Star like vehicle

5.What would you want a Capri to be if they start making it again? (i.e. soft top, retractable hard top, engine, etc.)
     a.    Retractable Hardtop with a motor
     b.    50/50 Weight Distribution
     c.    Sound of a 60's musclecar (settle for similar to current Dodge Challenger SRT8)
     d.    Nice tight fitting look to the wheel wells but plenty of space to play with different tire sizes.
     e.    Similar pop-up headlights but some sort of LED touch similar to the more expensive cars of today.
     f.     Optional Rally Car model with higher ground clearance for those of us with bad joints when we cannot get out of our current ones.
     g.    Optional value model with a small diesel engine that gets 45 MPG yet is faster than our early 90's xr2.

Sorry I had to modify it....went to offer to purchase a hard top from one I had seen.....ending up taking the whole car so now I have two 1992 XR2's

3. i bought my 91 capri not knowing what it was. It only cost me 500 bucks and it was a little red convertible so i thought why the hell not? When i got it home about 50 miles away, i found some rust and all the calipers were locked up from sitting and it needed a new top and i didnt care because i was excited. I fell in love with this car before i even drove it. It was quirky and i own an 84 rabbit so i like quirky lol. but the fact that i finally owned a convertible is what made it great in my opinion. Also its powered by mazda and mazda is awesome.
4. probably an 80s or older porshe 911 as they still had air cooled flat 6's and no body else did it. also rear engined(not mid engined) rear wheel drive ever since they came out and they handle amazingly. Its that kind of ingenuity i love in a car and the 80s ones just look so retro and pretty. the 911 is just a great sports car.
5. twin turbo, rotary, rwd, aluminum chassis, stiffness. Thats about it lol

3. I always thought the Capri was a fun, quirky, unique car.  Living around Detroit, I remember seeing a lot of them in the early 90s.  Then they quickly disappeared.  I was into Mustangs at the time and forgot about the Capri.  A few years ago I was scanning CraigsList and saw a few Capris for sale at an attractive price.  I zeroed in on a Capri from South Carolina and had it trucked to my driveway.  The most attractive thing is that the Capri is a good looking, unique looking, rare car that is a convertible with a back seat so my girls can sit in it.  I don't care that it's not a race car and not RWD.  If I wanted a car with those features, I'd buy a different car.  Searching for parts makes it fun.  But without this forum, I know I'd be more frustrated.
4. Aston Martin DBS
5. I like the Capri the way it is, with all its warts and pimples.  I especially like the manual roof and the process of putting it up and down.  My dad used to work for Ford and made a visit to the assembly plant in Australia in the early 90s.  He saw the way they tested the roof durability - 2 guys putting the roof up and down for their entire shift.  Yikes!  I wouldn't want to do that all day.

My 92 XR2 was purchased with my reenlistment bonus. several modifications are to be done to this by the time I'm done with it, it should be something rather unique.
I love the Capri because I'm gay, and it's a rather...gay car.  ;D It's reliable, economical, stylish, cheap and easy to work on, and it can get out of its own way.
dream car is an R31 Skyline Gt-R, dream truck is a 7/8th generation 3/4 ton Suburban with a 5.9 isb swap.
all wheel drive with a formidable power plant, and maybe just call it the XR3. Some kind of sexier offspring of an F40 and a mustang.

Hi Y'all, Newbie Jean here, in Holly, MI (between Det and Flint).  Recently bought Red 92 turbo convertible for my FL ride.  It's roomy enough for 2 adults and golf clubs, plus a back seat - What more can one need?  Never heard of Capri before, but it was so darned cute, priced affordable and fun to drive - I couldn't pass it by.  My dream car is red '64 corvette convertible, without the price tag.  (old memories of younger days die hard)

A Capri is 100 hp of raw power. It is meant to be worked on and get greasy turning wrenchs.

I wanted something with better gas milage (50 mile daily drive), inexpensive, manual transmission, front drive (120" snow a year ago here), fun to drive, Ford product, smaller than the Taurus since my kids drive themselves now.
4. Since $ would not matter, I guess I'd want a Ford GT, not the new one just coming out, the production super car 60's lookalike. My personal favorite looking sports car.

4. My dream car is actually a fairly common one.....a HONDA CRX 89-91models with a 2JZ engine modified for RWD and lowered NOT SLAMMED!!! I know it's lame but it's simple nice and comfortable for me
5. I would love to see the Capri with a choice of either FWD or RWD with more HP, if the Capri could also be longer with more space in the hood to work on, and either soft top or a retractable hard top don't matter just something that won't rip or break easily

This IS my dream car... check out my build thread ☺

XR2 2016 would have 4wd option, 2.0 litre turbo, 18 inch wheels, 2 pot brakes, typhoon style body kit and... and... maybe a retractable hard top. Every car bought would also entitle owners to join a xr2 track club... free entry to race tracks and an XR2 Club race cup.

5. I want the Capri to be kept nice and small. Definitely a convertible, soft top, and maybe a cup version like what Mazda offers with the Miata. A small and revvy engine is definitely the way to go, a variant of the 4-banger Ecoboost would be fantastic. Also, pop-up headlights are a must. A full-time AWD option would be amazing as well, make it a little rocket.

I bought my Capri because I have always liked oddball, unique cars (fiero, Delorean, bricklin, le baron, solstice, pulsar, svx, conquest, talon, geo storm, 924, exp, Subaru  xt1).  I specifically love the wedge look of them, back seat, turbo, unique, convertible, red, only one at a car show, too young with no money when they were new but could now afford one, good deal - low mileage - auction win surprise on eBay!

I am fortunate to own my dream car, a red 1991 Dodge Stealth RT.

My dream new Capri would be similar to the Lotus Exige x Fiat 124 x Solstice with turbo, a small back seat again, and 300+ horsepower, red with a white interior.

I'm Derek from New England. I just picked up a 91 XR2. I've always wanted one and finally got the opportunity. I've owned fox body mustangs, 1g DSM's, a couple Festiva's, and my daily is a  03 Buck Regal GS with the supercharged 3800 v6. I'm looking forward to modding this XR2. Goals are a little bit more power with excellent handling.

1. Josh
2. Chicago, IL
3. I have a thing for Italian designs, and the Capri hardtop looks like someone squished a Lotus Esprit
4. Lancia Stratos or Autozam AZ-1 with a Hayabusa swap
5. If they make a new one, just make it a small, fun, economical convertible that isn't as lame as the FIAT 500c

Welcome Josh, sounds like you've got the same taste I do.  Love the Italian styling and you're the first person I've run across who loves the Lancia Stratos.  Would love the have one on the replicas for a DD when it rains.

1. John and my wife is Barbara.  I have been a member of the forum for a few years, but never posted or used it a lot until recently.   See why on #3.
2. We are originally from the Harrisburg, Pa area.  We moved to eastern NC in 1996 due to a job transfer.  We are currently in Winterville, NC.
3. I bought a 1994 Magenta Capri NA new for my wife just because she liked it.  I was OK with it, but it was her thing.  Things went pretty smooth with the Capri until 2009.  It starting having some issues, so I parked it in our garage and bought her a Mazda MX5.   The Mazda was totalled when we got sandwiched in Raleigh a few years later.   The Capri just sat in the garage until November, 2017 when I started to mess around and getting it running again.  This forum was a blessing.  That gave me the bug and I went on the search for a 1994 XR2 which I am happy to say, will be parked in my garage in February.  Now I have an obsession....bought a 93 NA for parts before Christmas and a 92 XR2 that runs good, but needs paint.
4. I have always obsessed over Healey 3000's and Jeeps, but never bought a Healy, but had a 1980 Jeep CJ7 for 20 years.  Man I miss that thing.
5. Changes that I would like is V6 and rear wheel drive.  Soft top is great.  I am retired now, so it is all about playing.

I'm Raymond from Long Island N.Y.  I recently discovered these little spitfire of a car.... A friend had one in the 80's. I just acquired my first Capri, a 1991 form an original owner  with 39k miles. She was loved and will continue to be.  I have always liked oddball, unique, unseen cars. I also have a 69 Opel GT, a 2010 BWM M6 , and a 2004 ML 430.
I say a car for each if the seasons.  Glad I found this site.

Hi Ray
Just returned to this site after many years away. Your post caught my eye with the 69 Opel GT. I worked in the service department of a Buick dealership in the early to mid 70’s we sold and serviced a lot of Opels I loved driving the GT.

Hi,

My name is Ben and I live in Hendersonville, NC. I just recently bought a one owner, un-molested, red XR2 with 82K on it and a managed to snag a hard top the same day. I used to have a buddy, who has since passed away, that bought one of these new and we got into a lot of "trouble" in his in college...Good memories and the time was right to buy one so why not?. Dream Car? I already own mine as I bought a Euro-Spec 1984 Porsche 928S three years ago and it's everything I thought it was since I first saw "Risky Business" ;-) Last, I would like to see the Capri brought back perhaps as an AWD turbo vert'...Something eccentric like these cars.

Hello all, my name is Brianna. I purchased my Capri in Michigan, but I have since moved to central Illinois. I was browsing craigslist, looking for a cheap project with a manual. This popped up, I did some research, and I fell in love. It wasn't in the best condition (still isn't), but I love that it is small, unique, and it needs a little bit of everything so it will be a good learning experience.
Dream cars are hard to pick, and I haven't been able to test drive and feel out many cars, so I would say I need to do more research before I can answer this question.
If the Capri came back, I think they should keep it a convertible, not make it into a hatchback. Keep it with a small, turbo engine with manual as an option. Make it an affordable weekend sports coupe, for those of us who can't afford corvette's.

Greetings phoenix, base models did not have block heaters as standard.  If you go to the home page, there is an appropriate category for asking questions about N/A models.

Hi, just getting started on a Capri.

It is a 94 XR2.

Technically it belongs to my 21 year old son, who inherited it from my brother.

More or less it was parked in a garage most of its life and is essentially mint looking.

I am mostly on here to figure out a few items on it, parts sources, etc.

My sister in law kept it in quite good condition before shipping it to my son, but we are still learning.  So far it is just being used to teach my son how to drive a stick shift.

Thanks for the nice forum.

Thanks.  Its kind of a shame really.  My brother kept it virtually perfect and it only has 31K miles on it.  He loved that car.

My son already has a BMW 3 and doesn't really see any point in owning an "old car with a stick shift."

I am not sure how long he will keep it.

We just don't have a place here for a 4th car that nice.

Hello my name is Terry. Figured I may as well introduce myself since I plan on using this forum quite often while I repair, modify, upgrade and possibly butcher my 92 N/A. Just kidding!! LOL I love this little car though! It lacks power but I plan on replacing the engine with the BP at some point. For now I am enjoying it as is while I gather a host of parts and repairs which are daily since I did not pay much for this car. I live in south Atlanta, GA.  People stare at me every time I drive it because there is no emblems on the car and are so rare here few know what they are. Even in the largest salvage yards here I have only been able to find 3 and they have been picked clean of the best parts. I am a Kia Master Technician and I have been with them for roughly 10 years and have been a mechanic for more than 25 years probably closer to 30 years. My dream is to build a nice autocross or drag car/show car out of it and when I retire in a few years I will have enough time and money to invest in it. I enjoy reading all the posts and learning a few things I did not know before about these cars. To the Admins Great Forum folks!!  Thanks for allowing me to join!!  Take care Terry!!

Welcome, love your choice of vehicles.  If you are planning a hot rod with a BP, sign on to the Festiva forum and on the FB page.  They do a lot more high performance work.  Carlos Rivera(spelling may not be right) has a street driven Festiva that does 125MPH in an eighth and builds engines for a living.

Fairly new to the Capri family.

Ray
West (by god) Virginia.
Bought the Capri because my daughter knows how to get me to buy her anything. Not to mention 90k miles, little to no rust and runs great all for $600. After a new alternator, battery and brake lines, calipers and pads it will be perfect little car. Cant forget a new top.
If new Capri was built I have no idea yet, just started on this one. But they could do away with that fuel cut off button in the trunck, had me stumped for 2 days, thank you rocket man.
My dream car, I drive it. I just need time to finish it. 2000 jeep wrangler. I have new frame for it with half the suspension under it and rebuilt tub waiting to go on. I haven't had time to touch it in months though.

Hello! I'm Lars, I've been a member for several years but haven't had money to repair my 1993 Capri. I purchased it nearly 5 years ago for $400 from a waitress at a diner here in Tulsa, OK, USA. The shift linkages needed to be replaced, one of the windows didn't roll up or down, the ignition key wouldn't turn off all the way and would kill the battery. the passenger side door doesn't open from the inside, and I think the drivers' door won't unlock from the outside. The interior was totally dirty and trashed so I literally removed everything that would come apart and clean everything. This worked out fairly well for the most part. There's a few parts i'm not sure of where they go and I'd love to post pics on here and have you experts identify them for me! Oh, it came with the hard top so if nothing else I knew I could sell the car and/or the roof for a profit. How do I submit photos on here??

Welcome, glad to here from you. Sounds like you have quite a project ahead of you.  They are actually easy to work on, most everything can be fixed except serious rust.  Lots of used parts out there from rusty northern cars. I don't know exactly, but pictures have to be loaded from an online service.  Personally, I"ve never loaded any because it's so much trouble....lol  Sorry I'm lazy.

Hello, introducing myself...

Hi all,

I've been a "guest" reading here for a few years and finally got around to registering.

I have a 1991 red (of course) Capri that I keep on the road in Colorado. We call it our "picnic car" as much for what it does for us and the state of mind it creates while driving otherwise.

I'm looking forward to sharing story, parts, and knowledge with similarly crazy fans of this car.

My best to you all,

I didn't make many miles on my Capri in 2019 too many trips required a truck or Jeep. I am hoping for better this year, more trips down the mountain on small errands and chores would help.

Hi. I am a new Capri owner & new to this group. First, I like to start by saying, I DO like the name Capri! Afterall, isn't it Italian designed?!
1. John Picarello (Also Italian designed!)
2. Macungie, PA (A hop, skip & a jump from Dorney Park)
3. I drive a Ford Explorer & though I really like it I've always missed driving sporty cars with manual transmissions. To me, driving a car with an automatic transmission ISN'T driving! I also wanted a 4 cylinder because I already contribute greatly to the oil companies by filling up the Explorer! I searched on my local Craigslist for a 4 cylinder, manual transmission vehicle, sold by owner & behold, this beautiful little red convertible popped up! The fact that it was a Mercury was an added bonus. It is hard to say what I like best about it. It is gorgeous, fun to drive, a convertible, a hardtop (yes, it came with that too!), it has a turbocharger, etc, etc, etc!
4. If money were no object my dream car would be...ANYTHING SHELBY!!!
5. I don't know if it is because it is so new to me but I can't think of anything I would want different if they started making them again.

Welcome, and your enthusisum is welcome also. I've been into them for 3 or 4 years now and love the little buggers. I have a 91, 92, and a 93 XR2's and have a great time with the. As you get more involved you'll discover under the skin they are a 1988 Mazda 323GT which make finding parts a lot easier.  Good luck and you're at a good place for assistance keeping it running.

1. My name is Bo
2. I'm from Alpine Lake, in the mountains of WV
3. I haven't bought it yet. I sold my 1969 Fiat 124 Sport of 19 years two years ago. I have always liked Capris and my wife finally saw one at Carlisle a year ago. So now after two years my wife said stop whining and find a convertible you want to drive.
4. Dream car would be an Austin Healey 3000 or Porsche 550 Spyder.
5. Keep it small, soft top, high revving 4 cylinders. Go retro but keep a space behind the front seats so you can take it on trips. Also go golfing with a partner and clubs not choose between the two.

Greetings and welcome. Love the part of the country you are from. Perfect for Capri road trips. Sounds like you are the perfect owner for one. Expect a few problems from a 30 YO car that typically didn't get much use or maintenance.  Lots of knowledge here to draw from.  There are several for sale on the FB owners group right now. Good luck.

Hey everyone - brand new '91 Capri owner here. I happened to stumble upon this forum in hopes of learning a little bit about my car. I'm also brand new to mechanic-type work in general, but was hoping to educate myself as I work on my Capri as a little project car. So far I love the car - but am a bit disappointed that there isn't a lot of activity on this forum ( I posted a response to aftermarket stereos about a week ago and no one has replied yet :( ). I have a lot of questions but I'm trying not to be annoying by spamming the forum with my ignorance. If anyone is able to help out, I would seriously appreciate any wisdom they have to offer.

Cheers!

Edit: I almost forgot to answer the 5 questions:

1. Call me gr1mmy :)
2. NY - USA
3. My Capri chose me. I was in a rather bad rear-end accident, and the '91 Capri was the best value for my price range when searching local cars for sale by owner. My favorite part about it is the flip up headlights (I've always wanted a car that has those)
4. Definitely either any generation of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo or the Toyota Trueno
5. Making the Capri as a soft top would be most interesting to me
Title: Re: Getting to know the members
Post by: greywolf27030 on September 23, 2021, 10:06:10 AM
Welcome grimmy, I also kinda backed into the Capri business myself. I'm old school and the Capri was the first fuel injection car I ever worked on. You're right in that there isn't a lot of action here anymore. 1991-1994 Mercury Capri Owners Group on FB has more action. I like the forum because there is a lot of info here that is in much more detail that on FB. You didn't mention if you have a base or an XR2, but there are special forums for each. I don't recall seeing a post for stereos, what was your question? Don't worry about questions, we were all newbies at one time although a few members sometime forget that. Once again, welcome.

Welcome Gr1mmy.....Your capri should already have a soft top. The top and frame is stowed behind the back seat unless someone had removed it. If the hardtop has been on the car for a while, the top may be in bad shape or dry rotted.  If you pull down the felt fabric in the trunk behind the back seat, you should see it.  if you take the hardtop off, be sure to not lose any of the bolts.  they are hard to come by.

Thanks Greywolf/Jdp!

Yeah I noticed there was a FB group - but I haven't had a FB account for almost 10 years and don't really plan to get one (I guess that makes me old school as well :P). My Capri is not the XR2 unfortunately so no turbo :( also, to answer your question my post about radios was here: http://teamcapri.com/forum/index.php/topic,4425.0.html (http://teamcapri.com/forum/index.php/topic,4425.0.html). Jdp - yes my '91 capri is a soft top, that #5 response was just an answer to the question: "what would you like if they made the Capri today?" - so apologies for not being too clear on that!

Thanks again to both of you, looking forward to learning a lot about my Capri and connecting with people who share the same interests!

Hello Everyone - My name is Gary and I originally purchased an XR2 in Oct of 1990. I modified/upgraded and raced that car in multiple disciplines and had a small article in Super Ford Magazine. Unfortunately I ran out of driving talent and totaled the car on a snowy day in Feb of 94. I kept the car but family priorities took over and eventually parted the car and its go fast goodies out a few years later. The actual car shell going to a 323/Capri friend of mine. Flash forward to today and I recently purchased sight unseen a near replica of my XR2 with 50k. It needs work (The pics looked good) as it seems it has been sitting outside for sometime. My 323/Capri friend was kind enough, or gladly to clean out his garage of his/my old 323/Capri parts. I still have lots of work to do and as most parts are hard to find. I think a reasonable goal it to have it Autocross ready for the Carlisle Ford show in June of 2022.

Welcome to the community, glad to see someone who appreciates the possibilities a Capri has. There is  builds topic on the forum where you can post your restoration and modifications as you go along. It would be nice if you could detail what you are doing as you go along to provide information and inspiration to other members. Would like to know where you are located, I'm in NC and there are several others members here. Once again, welcome.

I am located in Pennsylvania, about halfway between Allentown and Harrisburg. I will do my best to document the process. I am still in the planning stages, I have ideas I want to hash out and want to gather pieces before starting and I do not want to do things twice. Basically this car to me is unfinished business from years ago, it want fast "back in the day" and I want to show the kiddies that old stuff is/was fast and old guys can drive. Let me just say, my step-daughter has a Mini Cooper S that needs to be taught a lesson.

I am well aware of the power these cars can produce with just a few upgrades like a free flowing exhaust, valve controller and adjustable cam sprockets. I went 13.73 and 100 @ Maple Grove Raceway. I also autocrossed the car, since I had also upgraded the wheels/tires and suspension, it surprised lots of people. It was a handful, torque steer is a real thing, but so much fun. I basically want to make a replica of my old car, my 323/Capri friend still had my old 15" wheels among other things. I plan on upgrading a few other things as well. I do not plan on making it a race car but a street car that can be fun.

3.Why did you buy your Capri/323 and what do you like best about it?

Just got a 1991 XR2 with 34K miles. Another great car Mercury dealers did not understand or sell. And yes, I once owned a Merkur too. Got the Capri with my son as a fun-to-drive convertible (summer on the Cape!) and maybe something we could do some work on. It’s already pretty good, but would just like to get it back to original as practical. My son really liked the design and having something unusual.

4.If money were no object, what would your dream car be?

Good Lord, what a question. So many great cars — 1939 Cord, 1963 Avanti, 911, McLaren F1…
Easier to get my head around is what would a dream daily driver be? Maybe an Audi R8 Spyder? Boxter?

5.What would you want a Capri to be if they start making it again? (i.e. soft top, retractable hard top, engine, etc.)

Easy. The original concept was sound, if not fully followed through. Ford has the parts to do it now and with little new development. Start with a Ford Fiesta or Focus ST. Both already two great handling FWD cars. Cut the roof off, canvas top OK, but I do like a removable hard top for winter.  Add a few more HP and optional RS AWD for those insisting on having powered rear wheels. Get a great stylist to do the body. Done. An alternative would be to take the GM Fiero approach, mount the ST/RS front drive train in the back to create a mid-engine roadster. Perhaps better, but much more engineering work and likely much more expensive. Price does matter.

3.Why did you buy your Capri/323 and what do you like best about it?
I have always been into oddball cars that are not as mainstream as Mustangs or Corvettes. Always liked the Capri for the leg room. I got my Capri in trade for a motor and a truck bed. Had a 2001 F150 with a bad frame, cab, and electrical gremlins. Could not sell it so I change my ad to looking for trade only good parts are the bed and engine. A gentleman sent me pictures of a Green 93 NA Manual that he bought for his wife but she never drove it. It had been parked for 3 years in a barn.   Got it home and took the hardtop off and it had a brand new soft top already installed.

I have flushed all the fluids and replaced the stuck calipers and a bad temp sensor. She is fun to drive, zippy on the back roads and always a conversation starter. The only issue I have now is rough idle (IAC needs help) and it feels like the RPMS are to high at 65; 4000 to be exact.
4.If money were no object, what would your dream car be?
That is a really long list, but the top three would be a Ferrari Daytona, Lancia Stratos, and Lada Niva 4x4

5.What would you want a Capri to be if they start making it again? (i.e. soft top, retractable hardtop, engine, etc.)

Update the styling just a bit on the inside, keep the same body line. Make the soft top go down on its own. Performance-wise give it a better motor with an option to have it FWD or AWD.

Greetings, welcome to the community. Sounds like you got a good deal there and an unusual color. Probably right about the high idle problem. I started out with an N/A, then found out about the XR2. Another 30HP makes for a lot more fun. Now I have three....lol Be careful, it's a disease.

Hi everyone,

My name is Dave, I live in Melbourne Australia.  Actually not too far from the old Ford factory that built our Capris.
I bought my '91 N/A Capri because I wanted a fun, affordable project car.  She definitely hasn't disappointed.
It's funny, Capris aren't very well loved here in Australia.  They are regarded as bit of a lemon, which is completely unfair if you ask me.
Still, I'm not complaining - it keeps their prices down.

My dream car would be a DeLorean or 1984 Pontiac Firebird - yes I'm a child if the '80's!

hmmm new upgrades? maybe a power soft top and AWD.

PS I love this forum and was pretty gutted when it wasn't working.
I've done a lot of work on this car which would've been impossible without this resource.

Welcome to the community Dave.  Unfortunately the Capris had a tainted reputation in the US as well.  We have 2 of them....a 94 NA that I bought for my wife new and a 94 XR2 that I bought about 5 years ago.

Hi, my name is Richard, I live in Waco Tx.  I bought my 91 Capri (base) as a barn find Sep 2022.  Have replaced the fuel tank and pump, rear struts and brakes.  Front end coming.  The car is clean and complete, including the optional hard top.  I remember seeing these years ago and never really thought that much about them. (fyi I am a 72yo kid). I have my car entered in the local car show in March 23.  It no way show car ready, but will be the only one there.

Welcome Richard, I'm a 75yo kid who discovered them late also. Back in the day my neighbor had one and I thought it was cute.  Be careful it's an addiction. Sounds like you have a good start there. I took one of mine to a Miata meet one time and got a lot of interest. Back here in NC we also have combined Festiva/Capri meets.

I've often wondered how long I could get away with it, showing up at a Miata show and saying it's a first gen. Shoot, it could probably even pass for a 240z from a distance too.

Glad that, just like at work, I'm probably the youngest one here by decades too. That just means I've got good taste in interests, yeah? Plus, I sure do need SOMETHING in my life to make me feel young  :P

Welcome to the club Richard, and congrats on the barn find! Let's see some pics

Hello Everyone.  I figured I'd post here since it's been a very long time since I've been active with the Capri.  It's languished outside for several years after it's last alternator gave out and the last run of nice weather finally inspired me to get it to turn over. I've ordered a new slave cylinder and managed to get it into the garage limping along on the starter motor so hopefully if there's nothing fatal I'll be back on the road by summer. Cheers all! Looking to reconnect

Welcome back to the club  ;D  I dunno where you're at (I'm assuming NJ), but I have a guy in southwestern NY who has rebuilt at least 1 Capri alternator. If you need help with yours let me know, I can send you the address to his shop. He did warn me he's running low/out of parts for the 85A alternator though.

Welcome back. As E says, alternator/motor shops can rebuild you alternator. If you op to get one from a parts store be sure the pulleys match. It's common for parts store alternators to have a pulley that causes belt problems. I can empathize with you, I've been trying to get one going that set for 20 years. Hopefully your brake master cylinder is okay as rebuilds are not available. If there is a problem, we have a guy in Australia that buys rebuild kits and ships them to us because the seller will not ship. Good luck with it.

Thanks for the welcome back and the advice.  I know all too well about the alternator pully problem.  Almost all of the rebuilt ones come with a split pully and most change the shift diameter so our pull won't fit.  What is the preferred belt these days?  I know Russ used to sell one.  I read he shut down Roo Sport a while ago.  Are he and Matt (Rocketman) still active?

Good to see you still around.

3. I bought my capri in January of this year (2023) because I happened upon an ad on facebook marketplace for the cutest little convertible car with pop up headlights for a mere 1,600 dollars and with an insane interest in cars that at that point in time happened to be focused on wanting to learn stick shift, I went to go travel to an area just outside of Baltimore to go buy a manual mercury capri from 1991.
4. if money were no object I would love to get my hands on a DeLorean I have heavy interest in all things 80s/90s cars and I feel like the DeLorean is a pretty darn good representation of the time period.
5  I would want the capri to of course keep the pop up headlights but as for the top I think it would be so interesting to see a t-top on a capri in the future and I would really like to see them keep it a small car.

Hi everyone,

Finally got around to posting something.

Based in Australia. I have a '94 XR2 which I bought new.

I left it in storage for about 20 years while travelling and working overseas.

Overhauled the fuel system, brakes and hoses.

I now have it back on the road and it is my daily driver. Been fixing up other things as I go.

The pulleys on the alternator and water pump were worn and chewing fan belts so I replaced the water pump pulley and the alternator. The alt is horrible to replace on a RHD. I lost a lot of skin that day.

Just put a new canvass top on and repaired the heater. A heater is not essential in Queensland. But it stops the windows fogging in the rain.

As is typical, the plastic levers for the blend door had broken. Fortunately, all the pieces were still in the car.

The plastic parts can be repaired. A bit of superglue to hold them in place and then a few hot staples to make the join permanent. It stood up to hammering the pins back in place so it should last.

I'm not so confident with the push pull cable operating it. The existing cable had bent too far to bend back into position without breaking it.

I used a length of aluminium wire (sorry, aluminum) in the existing sheath to make a new cable. It's all I had. It works very smoothly. For now. But the metal may be a bit soft for repeated use.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a type of metal wire in case I need to make another cable?

The car is running well and is still fun to drive.

Cheers

Simon

Sounds like you have been on quite a trip there. I'm also trying to get on going that sat for 20 years. If yours starts you're way ahead of me. I congratulate you on saving the car. Does it have a turbo?
Title: Re: Getting to know the members
Post by: Simon Courtney on July 23, 2023, 09:03:02 PM
It's a non-turbo.

Production had finished when I bought it. One of the few remaining on a dealer's yard.

I think I was lucky. The car was kept covered while I was overseas. So other than the fuel tank rusting out it was in quite good condition.

I found someone who reconditioned the tank.

Engine turned freely by hand.

So, mine is probably an easier project.

Having said that, I would have spent way more than what the car is worth. But I knew the car's history ... if that makes sense.

The more I drive it the better it seems to run.

So no regrets.

Its been a while since I’ve seen this question so here it is.
1.Name --> Joshua
2.Location --> Baldwinsville, New York
3.Why did you buy your Capri/323 and what do you like best about it? Originally bought a 91 Capri base auto car brand new at a dealership.  Then upgraded to a non turbo manual model.  Then upgraded again to an XR2 Manual I found and had shipped from California which instill have with 41,000 original miles.  I then found a craigslist post with 2 1991 Capri XR2 cars (1 with a hardtop and stand) for $1000.  Parted put one that was too rusty to save and kept the other 1991 which I plan to heavily modify.

4.If money were no object, what would your dream car be?
Dream car for me would be my 1998 Dodge Dakota RT FULLY restored and race prepped.

5.What would you want a Capri to be if they start making it again? (i.e. soft top, retractable hard top, engine, etc.)
If they were to start over on the Capri I would make it rear wheel drive like the Toyota MR2 and Miatta.  Power convertible top.  Ditch the useless rear seat.  Upgraded turbo amd clutch system, better designed shifter linkage and put fuel tank filler behind the license plate.
