Title: What have I broken?
Post by: JimmyGermany on January 04, 2021, 06:02:46 PM
Gentlemen,

Went to get the car out of the garage for an appointment in the workshop.

Went to install battery, which was on a trickle charger in the house.
Seems I got poles wrong, headlights did a little dance.
Tried to start. No worky-worky.
Turned battery around. Headlights retracted.
Tried to start. Nothing. Not even the attempt to turn over.
Lights still work, but that’s about all.

What have I fried and is there hope?

Cheers
James.

Hi James,

Indeed, there's always hope!

If you are lucky you simply blew a bunch of fuses and relays, easy and cheap enough relative to the next level of possibilities. We hope they did the job, so as to stave off worse.

Next set of possibles...the ECU, alternator, etcetera...

Third set of possibles...all of the above in some combination of traumas.

If there was no smoke or burned odors maybe you got lucky and it's just fuses and relays. Electricity, like water, flows the path of least resistance so it's hard to know what's burned without a lot of sorting. Based on my experience in isolating a short, it took hours of patience.

I'd start with fuses and relays and a circuit tester.

We sure wish you good luck!

Let us know; as Red Green said in his Canadian TV show: "We're pulling for you, we're all in this together."

Steve

Usually the 80amp MAIN fuse pops, it's bolted into the under-hood fuse block.
Try replacing that, it seems that many folks have done this and no further damage is done other than the blown fuse.

Gentlemen!

I have been lucky indeed!

The 80A main fuse was blown, and the radio didn’t survive the experience.
ECU and Alternator are still OK.

IT LIVES!!!

If it is an aftermarket radio, it may have it's own fuse installed in the back side of the radio.

Good to hear nothing major has suffered

James!

Yaaaaay!

As Rocketman says...there's nothing like a fuse (to block)!!

Cheers all,

Steve

Gentlemen!

Does anybody know offhand which fuse the electric mirrors are wired to?
They didn’t seem to work on the short drive to the workshop. .
Wipers - yes
Windshield spray - yes
Headlights and blinkers - yes.

This story has unfolded almost exclusively at night, so I’ll take a better look when I get the car back.

Cheers

Hi Jame,

My factory manual shows location 8 in the interior fuse panel, a 15 amp fuse, controls the "cigarette lighter, remote control mirror."

Page 34-50-2 of my 1991 manual

Cheers!

Thanks Steve,

I found a wiring diagram as well. Now I’m not sure if the mirrors aren’t working because of the battery story, or because I’ve got the cigarette lighter disconnected to deal with the shifter linkage.

It’ll all come out in the wash.

Thanks for all your help!

Hi James,

Nothing like wiring...

Keep us all informed with what you learn, as we all learn at the same time.

Cheers!

Most certainly will!

I wish I’d paid more attention at reading wiring diagrams at college 😁

The car is still in the shop, so I’m trying to make a plan of attack for when she comes back.

Cheers

Gentlemen!

A summary of the damage that I've discovered so far:
80A "Main" Fuse
15A "Cigar" Fuse (this is why the mirrors didn't work)
Internal fuse of aftermarket radio.

Possible buggering of the headlight circuits (see the other thread).
I know I got off lucky.

Cheers
James
