Title: Trunk Lid Struts
Post by: JimmyGermany on October 18, 2020, 05:19:21 AM
Gentlemen!

Is there any difference between the struts required for a trunk lid WITH a spoiler as opposed to one without?
My trunk (originally without a spoiler) seemed to stay open fine, now that I've replaced it with a lid with a spoiler (and without the swastika some A-Hole scratched into it), she won't stay open and I'm doing the broomhandle trick.
I don't know if these are the first ones still on there, in which case, they're allowed to slowly give up.
If looking for replacements, is there a difference?

Cheers
James

Yes, the XR2 does require stronger struts.

The lift struts are all the same length, but they have different force specs. According to Rockauto, without the spoiler they are 49 LBS and with spoiler they're 72 LBS.

Yep. Cheap and easy to replace too

Hi all,

This small project is on my winter list too.

Between the brands does anybody have a preference?

And, any thoughts as to "overkill," using the spoiler rated lift supports on a non-spoiler trunk? Any perceptions as to build quality, longevity, and etcera, or am I wasting a couple of dollars?

Cheers all!

Steve

I put the wrong ones on my wife's 94 NA by mistake.  When I turned the key, the trunk lid almost took my chin off.   If you don't have the spoiler, you shouldn't need the stronger ones made for trunk lids with spoilers.

Hi John,

Thank you, exactly the input I was hoping for.

NA struts it is, then I gotta drill out a broken bolt, one of the bolts that holds the front anti-sway bar to the frame....sigh...

Cheers all
