Title: I need a alternator.
Post by: mrbill on January 18, 2011, 11:52:00 AM
can't afford a new, or remanufactured. so I need to know what vehicles to look for in the local salvage yards to replace my 1991 xr2 turbo alternator. with minimal modifications if possible, just need quick fix until i can afford a new one.

Go on Rockauto.com and look at the parts interchange - the same alt was used on several different cars

Wow! 11 different makes to choose from. excellent advise, but not one 2nd gen. rx7 turbo. luckily one of the salvage yards I'm going to has 4 rx7s, thanks.

anyone of those ones make higher output alternators ?

I'm only seeing 929 and mpv listed, unless you mean the first series, which I HIGHLY doubt you have.

Most of those I would wager are the ones that have blown up at 100,000 with the crank keyways.

The one I'm using came out of a Mercury Tracer station wagon (if I recall correctly).
Bolted right into the Capri.

If that sorta helps ?

That one appears to have a slightly different pitch, but looks the same, with similar amperage.

I would assume the capri just happened to have a different one then the 323 series for clearance and wires, but the change is so slight that you can probably get away with it just fine.

Note though that the early 91 engines have different connectors to the Alternator, so if that is the case it might not work.

1991 Mercury Tracer LTS, 10-15 applications.

The first style and second style are interchangeable if you grab the correct connector and splice it into the harness. Not hard, just two wires.

The 323 Alt is a little smaller IIRC, again the connector is different but can be swapped

RC- crank keyway failure is pretty rare on a Capri.

Yep, that's right about the two wires.  I think I had to splice in a different connector or something...

Whatever I had to do was extremely minimal.  The alternator's been on there for probably 4 years with no issues whatsoever and was a really easy swap.

Actually need some info about alternators. I have noticed that there are two types of alternators for the capri. One with 85amps and 14v (Bosch)and one 70amp and 12v (mitsubishi). The basic question I need to know is will either work fine in my 91? I have bosch, with external cooling blades and 14v. Will a cheaper 70 amp work AOK? or, should I pay more for the 85 amp? My guess is yes, but why does the service manual tell you 85 amp-14v? is the voltage output that critical? are there differences in wiring? the housing looks the same.

Housings are different. Bosch has external cooling fins while the Mistsu has internal.

The long lower mounting bolt is specific to the brand of alternator. If you convert to a Mitsu, you will need a bolt from a car with a mitsu alt.

As stated above the plugs are completely different as well. You will need to source a plug & splice it in.

Im not sure why they specify voltage, both put out 14+ volts when operating correctly

Unless you're going to a junkyard to get all the parts along with the alt, stick with the bosch

This bolt you refer to, can one be found at a hardware store by any chance?

If your hardware store carries long metric bolts then maybe, I dont have measurements for it unfortunately.

Russ might be able to get you a bolt & plug off one of his parts cars, I'll check with him

Look up Capri Alternator in any parts site, it will give you two options, early model (85a) and late model (70a)
