Title: Project GTXR2
Post by: Rocketman on July 10, 2009, 09:00:00 PM
Well guys, since I wasn't able to make it to the meet I figured I'd let you all know what I've been working on. I started this project in April and its so close to being finished but I just couldnt do it in time for the meet.

I've been spending every minute of my spare time and even half of my family vacation trying to get it done. So much work  :(

I've got some pictures for y'all since I couldnt bring it to the meet to show it off. I've swapped the engine to a 1.8 out of a ford escort GT, plus the BP26 (BPT) turbo goodies. I'm using the old turbo from my B6T hybrid'd with the BPT turbo. I got rid of the FWD and forced a Mazda 323 GTX drivetrain in, so yes it is AWD. Its been insanely hard and needed way more parts than I ever expected. I dont have any recent pictures 'cause my camera is dead but I'll have some up soon. I need to take a break from working on this for a bit, its really burnt me out. I've been working 100% by myself, I even took all the pictures of me with the camera on a tripod...

Anyway here are some pics:

Hey Mathew!  I'm gonna scold you as I would my son or any of my work guys. Where are your safety goggles while under the car and gloves while welding. You're doing an incredible job, wish I was at your side with my two boys. Papa-Gus

I had to scramble under the car for that drilling shot to beat the camera timer   (http://graemlins/big-cool.gif)  i was wearing them during actual drilling. I left my fire resistant jacket at work, flannel usually does me just fine  (http://smile.gif)

Did Rocket ever get the bugs worked out of the Flux Capacitor he was working on?

This is by far the most intense capri project!! I love it!! AWD is so amazing, Im slowly working on a Talon project car right now with a 700HP goal in mind. Just go to youtube and type john shepherd (outer view), I could watch that allll day long   (http://graemlins/big-smile.gif)  Your def. a hero in the capri world. Cant wate to see the finished project.

Yeah I've seen Shep's dsm...that thing is nuts. Hes got what? 80 grand invested in it? I heard a number somewhere.

Yen, The car in the background is my other slow project..its a 1991 Isuzu Impulse RS. One of 800 imported to North america, they're really really hard to find. They're also really potent...160hp turbo 1.6 dohc (stock!), put to the ground with a AWD system and handling by Lotus...good stuff. Took me a year to find an engine for it (didnt have one when I got it) and its nearly all together...but the GTXR2 has taken priority.

Lol @ the pics yuri. Yeah I need to get the Flux Capacitor fine tuned so I can go back in time and make it to the meet this year.

Hey Rocket!  You installed your distributor on the wrong camshaft!    Gus
Title: Project GTXR2
Post by: Rocketman on July 16, 2009, 04:37:00 PM
Gostlrs,

Its setup so that the exhaust goes from my 2.5" section into the muffler there where its reduced to 2.25" and then into the xpipe. I have a valve that can be opened by a cable or by boost that bypasses the muffler and goes straight into the xpipe. This way I can have quiet/loud operation

Gus,

The BP runs the dizzy on the exhaust camshaft.

Soooooo a little bit of an update.

Picked up a BP GTX awd transmission (only available in japan, mated to the BG GTX w/ BPT)

Its going to be a lot of work to install it but shouldn't be too bad considering everything I've been through so far-

This AWD tranny's a bit stronger than the one I have now... means I can turn up the boost... Look out Joe  (http://graemlins/devil.gif)

Along with this going to put some internals into the engine and probably upgrade the turbo...

Going to work on the Megasquirt too...

And I'm keeping an eye out for a good deal on a Miata LSD to throw in the rear. Will play nicely with the VLSD center and 40/60 F/R torque split  (http://smile.gif)

Thats all for now. I'll update y'all when more comes along

kind of off topic but since where talking about transmissions do are cars have an aftermarket limited slip differential for them so that both front tires have the power instead of one ?

^^ thats one of the reasons why I won't use one of those. Motors, especially older ones like in our cars, tend to operate at different speeds. Also, I can't rely on that to properly aim my headlights. Cool for just a sleepy eye mod, but I'm actually relying on accurate and repeatable aim. The light also has to go through a full up/down cycle, which I can't have either.

My buddy had a simple momentary pushbutton on his ford Probe. worked okay but you have to time it just right.

Simple modification of the linkage is all I need.

The headlights look way awesome!
What does the shifter look like exposed without the boot? Maybe you can go for a brushed aluminium gated look like ones you find in Lambo's and ferrari's.
Rocket, your ingenuity knows no bounds!
Title: Project GTXR2
Post by: Rocketman on June 16, 2010, 09:21:00 AM
Here's what the exposed shifter looks like, minus this shift cables -

http://www.werbatfik.com/img/gtxr2/gtxr2_33.jpg (http://www.werbatfik.com/img/gtxr2/gtxr2_33.jpg)

I really wanted to do a gated shifter but I don't think it'll work on this one. Also going to throw some switches and possibly some gauges into the console there too

The headlights are proving to be a tough one for me, they're really hard to mount, and I can't use much of the original lights and brackets. Might not have them done for this year.

Also fiberglassed my trunk sealed, I had some gaps in the panels. Painted it black, the fuel cell looks awful pretty in there now  (http://smile.gif)  also have my -8AN fuel lines and filter to install.

Post by: Gostlrs on June 22, 2010, 03:15:00 PM
is it a pain for the fuel pump set up and the fuel level for the gauge?

would love to do that in the DSM....the tank units are expensive as hell and i have plenty of space for that
Title: Project GTXR2
Post by: Rocketman on June 22, 2010, 04:10:00 PM
Fuel pump is an external Walbro 255lph mounted under where the rear seat used to be. The fuel cell uses a GM 0-90 ohm sender which won't talk to the OEM fuel gauge anymore. I have an Autometer fuel level gauge I need to install somewhere.

I spent
$250 on the tank...
$290 on fuel line / fittings...
$100 on the pump...
$45 on the gauge...

yikes...

Josh - found a hub that required some mods but is an excellent fit
Title: Project GTXR2
Post by: Gostlrs on June 22, 2010, 04:47:00 PM
so that tank has the lines that feed to the bottom then...

would it of been better to get one that has the fitting on the bottom and the sump in it to use with the external pump..?

on my car i can sell the AWD fuell sell and the tank unit and break about even...one of the other reasons i want to do it...
Title: Project GTXR2
Post by: Rocketman on June 22, 2010, 05:28:00 PM
I would have much rather gone with a GTX fuel tank to keep everything OEM style, but I wasn't sure if it would fit, and they weren't the easiest to find. I would have kept my center of gravity way lower & between the wheels, and the tank in a good safe spot.

IMO... Keep the stock tank.

On my fuel cell - it has 3 connections - fuel pickup (tube to bottom) fuel return, and vent/rollover valve. It does take fuel from the bottom of the tank.

Title: Project GTXR2
Post by: Rocketman on January 04, 2011, 04:45:00 AM
I can't condone cutting up a good car.

Here's a couple reasons:

The GTX is rare, and unless you've found one totalled out, IMO it shouldn't be sacrificed for a capri.

BG Gtx rearend won't fit like the BF gtx rear fits.

Neither transmission will handle the power you have. (BG or BF Gtx) I don't beat on my Capri, I can't. It'll shred the gearbox.

With these transmissions its almost a novelty thing - yes its AWD - but you can't even launch the car.

If you want AWD that will also perform - go for a Mitsubishi or Toyota AWD gearbox w/ an adapter plate. Or even use a whole Mitsu as a donor. All the high power (~200+hp) GTX guru's have already gone this route.

If I don't end up getting wrapped up in my other Capri projects, I will be going this route in mine. (going to toyota e153 trans)

The GTXR2 has been parked in a non-running condition for some years now.
There were some electrical gremlins that occurred, causing a no-start condition that left me stranded the morning I was trying to host one of the NECG meets.
As may be understandable this left me incredibly discouraged with the project, as the issue was intermittent and could not be traced. (I believe it was the knockbox, the only part I did not have a spare for)
At this point, the whole car needs to be pulled apart, gone over, and many things re-done. I have unfortunately scavenged a handful of parts to keep my red XR2 driving and as spares to keep in the trunk for the long distance trip to the MACG.

I am renting shop space now, and last May had the GTXR2 prepared to be towed to my shop to begin an effort to get it back into running shape. The day scheduled for the tow an adjacent unit caught fire, and took out electricity to the whole building for a month. My shop did not suffer any damage sans the lack of electricity, but it put me way behind on my normal operations. Since then life has got real busy and my shop has had other pressing projects in it since then.

I am hoping to do something with it this year. It's in rough shape from sitting for so long.
Should I happen to get to working on it, I will be documenting the new progress - you guys will be along for the ride

Don't get me wrong, this wasn't to come off as a sob story, hah. Things are good. This virus is definitely a curveball though.
I have otherwise spent the last year building out the shop and amassing the tools I want to help me do more major projects in the future, but I was not anticipating the tools taking so much time to acquire and bring into operating condition. It is what it is though! Most recent acquisition has been a skookum MIG welder, which will be handy for car-works.

Expect good things from me in the future regardless of what they may be!
Hope everyone is staying home if they are able & staying safe.

Even more reason for a get acquainted visit one of these days...
