Title: turbo charger needed
Post by: GT40 kook on July 03, 2019, 10:46:13 PM
Hi I'm new here and trying to get myself up to speed on all things Capri, especially turbocharged.  My thing for years was a GT40 build.
However these days ford products of more modest background fit into my budget better.  I currently own four capris two of which are
XR2 cars.  Now a friend and I have stumbled onto a festiva with a 323 turbo engine swap.  Which brings me to the topic of this post.
Upon getting the festiva running we quickly discovered that the turbo was throwing a substantial amount of oil along with the air.  Well
tore it down with the intention of a rebuild and found that our turbo was beyond help.  Now when I bought the XR2 cars I intended to rebuild the turbos in both cars but now I'm spooked and afraid that I will encounter the same situation in one or both of the Capris.  So,
anyone out there have or know where I might find a rebuildable Capri turbo?  I'm betting i'm in need of more than one.  Thanks a bunch
for any help anyone can offer.

Welcome and good luck with the turbos.

VJ14's have been real hard to find for years. The Festiva guys are parts vultures and have been sucking up all the XR2s as engine donors for their projects for a decade now, so turbo bits are kind of hard to find. Occasionally someone will liberate stuff from their hoards but they go fast. Posted some info in the Turbo Upgrade thread for you

OMG  Please forgive me!  I had no clue of the reality of what is going on out there.  Now I understand how you Capri guys feel.  As I mentioned I have a couple of turbo Capris myself and another fellow I know wanted to know if I'd sell him one.  Just as you talked about he wanted to ransack a perfectly good Capri for the drive train to drop in his Festiva.  I was NOT impressed with his intentions and I let him know.  Asked him what in the world he was thinking!  So, in hopes that the fellows on the forum understand that I'm not yet one more XR2 vulture I assure everyone that I definitely value the Capri way above a festiva.   Not that I don't get a charge out of my little 40mpg econo bucket, but I was way offended when that guy suggested cannibalizing a Capri.

Hah, no worries, it's a whole thing. Not too bad here but the Facebook group is half Festiva guys ready to pounce. I have seen many a good XR2 get chopped by them. Even rare ones like 94 XR2's albeit a bit rusty but worth saving. It is what it is lol

The Festiva guys are good people. But they are merciless in their search for engine donors.

I have a VJ14 I might be willing to let go with minimal shaft play in a few weeks. Probably would be a good time to rebuild it though. Why not just upgrade the turbo while you've got it apart and get one of Matt's chipped ECU's? There is a thread about what your options are. I have chosen a VJ11-T-bird Hybrid.

I had a vj14 go out on me. I could not find a replacement for the life of me. I looked into other IHI RHB5 turbos. I found many on ebay that worked for me. I ended up with the turbo for the Isuzu trooper. The exhaust and header mated perfectly, and worked without a problem. I never got around to doing the measurement on the turbos though. It spools and moves the hunk of junk, so I never researched further.
