Title: Hi I'm new
Post by: zoom zoom on February 11, 2014, 03:07:00 PM
Hi all, new here! I'm buying a couple b6t's in the near future and I want to make sure I have my ducks in a row before I try to swap anything. I don't know if I'll even be using them this year but eventually one will make it's way into a Festiva.

Hopefully I can learn what I need to know between here and the Festiva site. I have a sohc b6 in my current Festiva and I love it. The stem seals and front main need replaced but it's not that bad they will work for awhile longer. Never had a turbo car so I am really excited about this deal I'm getting.

Welcome Matt what ducks do you need? And why a couple B6T's? :D

Turbos are addicting!

Just a couple turbo related components that I'm not familiar with. I may need to come up with a relay here or there if it's not attached to the two harnesses I'm getting, maybe a knock box, who knows what I will end up needing haha..

I'm buying 3, the first one has 160k and a "newer" turbo but the manifold is cracked. Supposed to be a good engine. Comes with the Capri harness and Ecu, and the guy I'm buying it from is going to mark the wires that need spliced for me to make it as dummy proof as possible.

So I'm gonna get another engine that has a vj11 with a good mani but the wastegate was welded shut and it was over boosted for who knows how long, owner says it just smokes a little like bad stem seals but I won't know till I get it and tear into it.

Then the third has a bad head gasket, unknown turbo, obviously works he ran the car for a few minutes just NO power like a clogged exhaust, good manifold and wiring harness and possibly the Ecu with this deal if I can talk him out of it.

So basically what I'm tentatively planning and might not even happen but I might get a wild hair and do it one weekend if think I have the stuff and I feel up to the challenge....

Swap manifolds on engine 1, drop it in The Festiva and make it run, make sure everything is wired properly and try to figure out what turbos are about. If I like the power I have a g series with an MFactory LSD that will be bolted to the engine I build out of 2&3 with miata pistons and a vj11/14 from the two junk turbos. I don't want to jump all in and be neck deep in modifications at once with nothing to show for it. I need a car I can beat on daily, so no long term garage queen projects for me. I already learned that lesson lol..

Swapping from stock to g series transmissions is a weekend project in itself, having to do custom mounts and check binding in the axles. So at first I want to just use the stock trans, it's about to go anyway and I got spares so it doesn't matter.

I don't think I'll be posting anything about it on the Festiva site for personal reasons. :)

The manifolds on just about every B6T are cracked. Most of the cracks are not large enough to cause any issues, I've only ever seen one that was bad enough to need replacement.

Engine with a VJ11? Wastegate welded shut? I'd pass on this one unless you get the trans with it. Azgtx usually has a line on VJ11 to make hybrids with, this one sounds like it was beat to piss.

Why not swap the G-Series in there to begin with & do it right? It's well known that the F-series doesn't play nice with the B6T. Why swap in a fun engine if you can't play with it? :D

If you need fab work done head out this way we can make it happen!

Haha that's a seriously tempting offer! I don't want to get in too deep, I work a lot of hours (70+) so my time is limited. I need to do it in steps for my own piece of mind.

For the price of #2 I can't pass it up lol... Who knows when you might need a spare head or something off the block. The used fuel injectors alone are worth more than the price of the motor.

Well stage .5 is complete, engine #1 is sitting at my house still on the trailer. I got a ton of other goodies for free while I was picking it up. I never knew they made tensioner pulleys or ac/ps pump brackets out of aluminum, but i have one of each now lol..

I got all kinds of pipes, the intercooler, FULL engine harness, two b6t ecus(you still chip ecus Matt?), Vaf, ......the pigtail i need to splice into the festiva harness with 4-5' of wire, ... Probably everything ill need minus a fuel pump and raditor(mine leaks..)

Sorry i got excited and forgot to take pics before strapping it down for the ride home. It was getting dark outside. I put about 650 miles on my 97 Aspire dragging my homemade/modified harbor freight trailer 4+ hours each way to pick this up. I didnt go straight home i made a 150 mile detour with it because i drove to cincinnatti the next day. Those festy guys doubted my stuff, thats why i dont like posting there, way too much negativity. I hauled 860lbs max on this trailer so far and i know it would do more, but seriously the thing is only 3.5x5' so its not big enough to fit much more weight on it. Works perfect for everything Ive asked of it so far, and the little bit of rust on my bumper hasnt been an issue either. -.-

This was on the way back... Lol i got 50 miles from home and decided to take the detour so it took awhile longer than this..

First serious question i guess,  do I need a 255lph pump or can i get away with a stock pump. Im reading conflicting stories. What do you guys use? Will be stock at first, MIGHT end up cranking it up later, maybe. Need to make sure I get it running asap no screwing around fixing things that dont need fixed first.

All I can say is "F The Haters" and "Haters Gonna Hate"
And "You're not doing it right if you don't have haters" lol

Not sure about the stock Festy FI pump. The Pumps in the Capri are all the same N/A or XR2.

255LPH is "too much" you might be better off with one of the 190LPH.

Wish I could get a HF trailer. They cannot legally be titled in PA / driven on public roadways without a massive amount of paperwork, time, and money.

Easy question, will the upper timing belt cover from a BP interchange with the b6t cover? The one on this engine is warped and is in desperate need of replacement...or elimination.
Title: Re: Hi I'm new
Post by: Chicken on March 07, 2014, 11:11:25 AM
That upper cover wil swap.  People do run engines without it and some go without any.
Title: Re: Hi I'm new
Post by: Rocketman on March 07, 2014, 01:40:49 PM
Ive run many years without it. No issues.

The bp cover wil bolt to the backing plate, but wont clear the engine mount/bracket if you're using the stock B6T mount
Title: Re: Hi I'm new
Post by: zoom zoom on March 07, 2014, 08:16:00 PM
Good news! I hope I didn't throw away that pristine BP upper cover. I kicked it around in the garage for a year or better but I haven't seen it lately.

None of my current cars have an upper timing belt cover but they're both sohc enigines. It's really not a big deal to me either way just thought it might be nice to have one once.

anyway, I did an engine swap for a guy yesterday and that cleared up my engine stand, cherrypicker, and most importantly, space in the garage! So, now it's time to downshift to 3rd on this swap.

I got the engine up and removed the manifold with turbo and downpipe attached. Got most of it stripped down and started cleaning up the block. It was pretty gunked up and had some mud dobber nests hiding behind the turbo and oil cooler/heat exchanger.

Stopped by a parts store and picked up a front main gasket kit but I think I have the wrong front main seal in the pack. Grabbed a rear main seal kit, oil pan gasket, and a couple camshaft seals. Then I stopped by advance and overnighted a valve stem seal set. Still need a valve covergasket, intake and exhaust manifold gaskets and I think that should do it for the engine itself.

Almost all of the rubber vacuum lines need replaced. Has anyone ever written down what sizes and how much I need to redo all of those?

I'm 99% sure I have a large nose crankshaft on this engine, what years did the large nose come on?
Title: Re: Hi I'm new
Post by: zoom zoom on March 07, 2014, 08:26:44 PM
Oh, I grabbed some NGK Vpower plugs too, that's what I use in my other cars, but since this is a turbo motor do I need cooler plugs? I gotta order some NGK plug wires and disty cap/rotor button, are there any brands that are better than others? Also looking for a new timing belt and water pump, I was just going to go with generic gates brand from rockauto unless you guys have a better idea?!

Does anybody know what the NGK part number is for the wire set?
Title: Re: Hi I'm new
Post by: Rocketman on March 08, 2014, 03:50:33 AM
I don't know of any "problem" brands with water pumps, I've used the cheaper ones before and haven't had any failures to date.

NGK V-power should be okay - stick with the stock heat range for now when you turn the boost way up & are making big power you can go a heat range colder, but not until then. I run a set of colder iridiums on the GXTR2

The large nose crank was late 91 on up, this is usually what you'll end up with. If you post a picture of the crank pulley we can ID it for you
Title: Re: Hi I'm new
Post by: zoom zoom on March 08, 2014, 05:48:05 AM
I'm sure its large nose then, I was assuming most 1.6 blocks were small nose. It has the pin and the 4 bolts are on a square pattern.

Hopefully I'll get that rockauto order in today, I'm gonna order one of the blue gates racing timing belts lol, i really shouldnt but ive been wanting one for awhile. Need the ngk plug wires to go with it but i cant find the part number. Are there only 5 wires in this set? Most pics on ra.com are showing 6?? I might be able to just transfer the ones off my current b6 if theres only 5.
Title: Re: Hi I'm new
Post by: Rocketman on March 08, 2014, 09:19:07 AM
Yeah the 4 bolts in a square pattern with the pin are the large nose crank. 4 in a rectangle, with a notch in the center bore is a small nose.

Not sure on the part number for the plug wire set. I've seen some sets come with six wires, it comes with two different coil leads as if the kit were sold for two slightly different engines, just use the one that fits.
Title: Re: Hi I'm new
Post by: zoom zoom on March 08, 2014, 09:48:32 PM
I couldnt think of anything a 6th wire would be for lol.. And my b6 wires wont swap i forgot the b6t wires are more like the bp and fs dohc heads/ wire sets that go down into the valve cover.

Aaanyway, i think this engine has been worked on recently.

1) The exhaust studs had antiseize on the head side of the studs.
2) The exhaust manifold was double gasketed, two multi layer steel gasket in there.
3) The intake manifold gasket came right off, didnt crumble of leave any trace on either side.
4) The block had dirt grease and oil all over it, but the head was pretty much clean outside.
5) The valve cover did NOT want to come off. Someone had used some type of sealant to ensure it did not leak, and it didnt.
6) ........ This is way too clean for a 160k engine...

Now I'm wondering what the extent of the work was, and why someone would scrap a car they just worked on.... I was going to try to do the valve stem seals and i forgot about the head casting for the bucket lifters interfering with spring access. I dont feel like spending the time fabing a jig to compress the springs with the head on the block, and with the recent findings im going to assume someone did a head gasket job, shaved bare minimum, got a valve job, replaced the stem seals, installed a new turbo and I think the best course of action is to replace the front and rear main seals and stick it in the car......

What would you do?

Also, the valve cover has been welded on the front. Does that ring any bells here? You guys know anybody who has welded a valve cover that might have scrapped a capri?
Title: Re: Hi I'm new
Post by: Chicken on March 09, 2014, 12:16:20 PM
It may have had work. Guessing doesn't assure that though.

I would take the head to a machine shop and have them check the flatness. My experience is that the Capri warps heads more than other B6 cars, and the Turbo Capris lead those numbers. The shop can do a pressure check also if you want them to. In the end its way more affordable to have them do that work quickly and with expertise.   <--- Assuming its a good shop.

The turbo motor specifies for a double gasket and the intakes often pop off perfectly.  Even if the work was actually done already, its worth checking that head whie its off.  Plenty of people may decide to get a gasket done without so much as refacing the head as a budget short term decision. Capri owners are often VERY budget minded.

And how does that gasket look?

Post by: zoom zoom on March 09, 2014, 01:46:18 PM
I only pulled the valve cover in hopes of replacing stem seals. I've rebuilt a couple b series, one BP and a coulple b3's, and worked on b6's/b6me's, and I know if i pull the head I'll end up dumping another $400 into this engine, which isnt worth it until I find out if the car will actually be as fast as people claim they are.

Thanks for the heads up about the double gasketed exhaust, I know theyre MLS but i didnt know they need two mls gaskets lol..

B3's warp easily too, most people just keep driving with a blown head gasket and don't ever know a difference, b3's are way underpowered anyway! I did a b3-b3 engine swap thursday for a guy, the coolant was coal black and I drained 5 qts of what looked like watery crude oil from the old engine.(the manual says they hold 3.5 from completely MT, i can do two cars with a single 5qt jug!!) Afterward I told him he needed a new suspension and he looked at me like i was crazy! He messaged me yesterday saying I was right, the new engine has way more power and throws the car around so much worse than the old one could its dangerous!  I wouldn't put a head back on without a mill job, but I'm not above using some 400 grit on a flywheel/PP/brake drums rotors and pads. :)

Alright so heres a turbo noob question you guys can probably answer for me.

Do I really need a boost gauge?

Its going to be a totally stock motor, wiring harness ecu and all from a capri. I'm sure I would end up installing one, along with my NIB wideband on the shelf, but is it pertinent just to make the engine run and the car driveable?  Do stock capri's have boost gauges?

Are there any gauges that are absolutely aside from the basic coolant temp, fuel, and oil pressure gauges?

I got everything off, put in a new front main seal..

new camshaft seals, pretty sure the ones that came out were fine, they looked like they were new, no dirt on them or anything.

put the timing belt back on, the water pump looks new, the timing belt idler pulley and tensioner pulley look and feel brand new, so I'm not gonna even replace the water pump...

I chopped up the rear timing belt cover, and removed the capri engine mount bracket from the block. I'm not going to have any timing belt covers on this engine at all, not even the lower. I'll trim the lower one so I can stick a single 10mm bolt in it to hold it in place when I need to set timing, other than that I don't need it.

The timing belt looks like it's brand new, no wear marks or dryrotting at all. I'm just gonna use new intake/exhaust gaskets, new valve cover/gasket, new plugs wires and cap/rotor button and stick it in the car now.

The B6D/T heads seem to warp a lot due to folks overheating & running way past the point of no return. I'm going to blame a lot of that on the crappy belt design. I see far more nonturbo engines like this for whatever reason.

Do you *need* a boost gauge? No. Should you have one? yes, you should. You're doing a engine swap, you should know what's going on with it. Yes the XR2 came with a gauge stock, but it wasn't super accurate.
SunPro sells a boost gauge, its like $25 0-20psi. Cheap, easy install, works well

As for the engine work, someone was in there, but the head isn't "too" clean for 160k. I'm not aware of any double gasket requirements, where would I find that? The stock gasket has 4-5 layers as it is

You need a jig like this to do valvestem seals :D

Post by: zoom zoom on March 10, 2014, 07:23:07 AM
Yea thats a nice jig you got there. :)

Last time i had to take apart a dohc head I had the head off and was able to use the wrap around spring compressor. I ended up cutting sides out of a big spark plug socket and welded a washer to the bottom, worked pretty good. :) I wish I had the time to make up a jig even tho I'm not going to do the stem seals now. Would be really handy to have around in the future.

One of the reasons I believe the head has already been worked over is because the valve cover gasket was sealed with sealant, someone didnt want it leaking ever again. If you had seen the block and how dirty it was all the way around except where parts prevented it you would have noticed it was a valve cover leak too. If it was the head gasket leaking that much oil it would only have been in certain areas on the head, and possibly water/corrosion dripping down too. The outside of the head itself was clean, so somebody definitely had the head off and gave it a good cleaning, for now im gonna assume the head has been given the full treatment within the last 20k miles or so because everything is pointing in that direction. The guy said it was a running engine so its gonna be in the car as soon as i can get the b6 out.

Im sure I'll get around to installing a boost gauge within a week or two. I also have an electronic boost controller, PLX wideband, and a couple other goodies that might end up in this car shortly if the car is fast enough.
Title: Re: Hi I'm new
Post by: Rocketman on March 10, 2014, 12:36:40 PM
The valve covers are supposed to be installed with sealant, at the corners. The gasket itself will not do all the sealing. So that sounds pretty normal to me. At this point I would imagine some cars having needed them done at least twice in their lifetime

I do see your point with the head being cleaner I won't disagree with you there

I still have my patterns for the valvespring compressor jig, if you're interested in one let me know

If the cover is welded, someone concerned with cleanliness has been involved.  Just stuff the engine in and hold on.  Get the money and to do list together for next winter.  Never mind the seals for now.  No need for a gauge unless theres boost related issue.

Gaskets = Its in the manual.  *Many of the kits have two or three. The kits can be confusing since they have parts for all model variants and no instructions. Older gaskets had the two spot welded together. The service parts were multi layer just like the original. There are also sets with a thicker gasket included, and then sometimes still have two stanless sheet ones. Last I saw, even Fram just plops two stainless gaskets in the box. I haven't heard of any ill effect from using just one on the turbo. I understand sometimes, thats what happens.

"Just stuff the engine in and hold on."

Haha yeaa now we're talkin! I almost pulled the b6 out today after work. I hopped in the aspire to move it and was instantly reminded i needed to weld up a new flex pipe when it fired up heh..

So i played with about 14 tires trying to get a working setup on both cars so I can retire the winterforce treads for the season and fixed the aspire.

I get my intake and exhaust mani gaskets on wednesday, so I might end up pulling the engine tomorrow. I figure this way i can have the flywheel resurfaced (if it needs it) wednesday and have all the time i need to do whatever else. Was gonna try to do it all this weekend but now i gotta install an aluminum bed on a dodge ram and do some painting for another guy monday. Hate to say no to the smaller side jobs those guys pay really well.

Got some stuff done today..

Pulled the b6, its gonna get a full treatment soon im gonna do new seals and gaskets and probably shave the head and a valve job, pull the pistons and clean out the ringlands. Engine runs great and it had 89k? When i bought it. Probably around 105/110 now. It'll be a back up/spare, mated to a 70k aspire 5 speed with a stage one spec clutch.

What do you guys think of this clutch/flywheel? It had a couple tiny blue spots but none of the lines in it when i put it on the b6. Is the disk glossy on the outside from slipping?

I should, I know i really should, but I want to see it run before I put too much into it.

I figure the transmission and fab work will be a project for next month.

Well I hate to do it but I'm gonna stick the b6 back in for the time being.

I got the b6t together for the most part, very little needed to finish it just stuff like plug wires and whatnot. Got a hole cut in my firewall and spliced 4 of the 9 wires needed to do the swap, i lack the two fuel pump wires and the under hood wiring.

Basically it's comming down to a deadline thing and i've got other stuff i have to get done. Everybody i know is after me to 'do this' and 'that' then wait 'I got another job for you..' So my personal projects have to take a back seat. I found out I need the fuel pump relay and i think the main relay? Two that plug in right beside the ecu.... Anyway ill just unplug the harness socket, pull the b6t harness and stick the old engine back in for now.

I said to myself that if this takes more than 3 weeks ill scrap the car how it sits, and i will if it isnt running next wednesday(april 2nd). I'm not having any more long term projects with everything else that needs done. Its logical and responsible IMO. Doesnt mean I'm abandoning this just putting it off till next month or the month after when everybody else chills out and i make all the money i can off doing other peoples side projects they've been dreaming of all winter long for them... That money is for my 'r888 fund and possibly coilovers' which im 2/3 the way to a set of r888's just from the last two weeks.

Who knows i might even be able to come up with enough $$ from side jobs to get a spec stg2 clutch for my b6/aspire tranny back up combo.

You going to be at the Spring Fling?

I'm kinda doubting it. I'm already scheduled to have two weeks off that month, may 5th-16th, for some schooling down in Hunnington WV, so I highly doubt they'll give me any extra days off. Who knows tho haha if he tries to pull a trick on me like he did on festiva madness weekend last year I may well be unemployed may 3rd. This schooling is worth more than this job I've been working the last 4 years. If you have the relays I'll pay you for parts+shipping. Rob is supposed to ship those to me but he hasn't said anything about it since last tuesday so I don't know if maybe he couldn't find them or what.

B6 is back in and running. I finished it up today.

I think its just cause the car sat for a week without moving but the click in the transmission is still there and way more pronounced. Also felt the clutch slipping pretty bad starting at 3,500 on up.

I might just go ahead and do the g swap, as much as i really dont want to.

I'll be more prepared next time tho, have the engine & trans bolted together ready to drop in before I even pulk the motor. Half the wiring is done so hopefully I'll have it all mapped out and ready to run. We'll find out soon.

One good thing about it, i'll be able to get a compression check and make sure the new valve stem seals cleared up all the smoke it was putting out, it was just a little on start up and whenever i would be cruising then put the hammer down.

I suppose i could try to use the rio axles since the g trans has an mfactory diff. That should cut down alot of the torque steer by itself. If that doesnt pan out i'll have to dig up a capri jackshaft.

Gonna cost alot more than i thought I really didnt want to get this deep in it all at once but whatever. I'll have at least a thousand in swapping it by the time its all said and done now.

Where'd you find a G-series with an MFactory in it? I heard running the Rio passenger axle isn't *that* bad but I don't have first hand experience with that.

Did you buy a complete swap or piece it together? They always cost more when done in pieces

You won't regret going to the G trans though

I built it awhile back, the price for an mfactory is X amount but there's also US Customs charges associated with it that you get charged with on delivery. IIrc it was closer to $900 just for the diff to get to my house. 350 for a 90k JY tranny, alot of 4 letter words later and its been chillin waiting for me to use it.

Anyway, i went to Karl's house this morning and helped him swap engines, on the way home a newer dodge charger was screwing with me, drove by about a foot wide off my car and acted like he wanted to race...

I broke an axle -.- luckily I was only about 40 mins out and my buddys house was between me and there, he towed the car home for me. Didnt even want the money I gave him just gas money lol.

So the damage is done, and I see absolutely no point in replacing the axle and putting it all back together like stock... Especially since I've already got these super cool goodies kickin around that need a home. The aspire in the side yard is a out to get stripped to the shell. I'll use the rio knuces and struts that are on it(already cut) and probably the 14" alloys I recently purchased. Guess its time to get some work done.. Need more hours in a day :(

Alright so I got the rio knuckles in, aspire brakes, rio axles, g series tranny, b6t motor in, got everything wired up(i thought, even brought in a specialist to help,) finally got my main power relay in the mail, and it's got no spark!

I tried a bunch of stuff and couldn't get it to start sparking, basically its everything capri, coil and everything. The main blue wire was spliced to the main white power wire on the festy, or maybe thats the other way around. ran 2 fuel pump wires, and spliced in the ignition wires.

Any ideas why I wouldn't have spark? I checked and cleaned almost all the grounds except the hard to get to ones, they should be good anyway.
