I have a 92 mercury capri with 75'000 miles and recently developed a problem. The car starts and idles fine, but the second you put it in gear it dies. Any sujestions

Give it gas as you let out the clutch...

Its an Automatic.
I'm really not too familiar with automatics. Check to make sure the BAC/ISC valve is working properly, I guess also look for vacuum leaks along your intake tract. Other than that I dont really know, maybe someone else with an automatic can help out.

I know I was making a funny because I know absolutely nothing about autos

I assume it idles fine in N also. While its idle turn on A/C and Headlights. Put some load on the car and see what happens. If it does the same thing, its prob what rocketman has suggested. IAC valve.
