Title: Clutch engagement
Post by: greywolf27030 on July 05, 2019, 08:17:43 PM
I was going to adjust my clutch because it engages at the very bottom of travel.  To my surprise the cable was adjusted up tight to the arm.  When I checked the pedal, there is no freeplay.  So no freeplay and bottom release and no adjustment in the cable.  The PO said the clutch is a recent replacement.  Did they install the wrong clutch?  I haven't noticed any slippage although when it sits there is some chattering suggesting a leaking rear seal.  Any ideas?

Thanks, Jack Byrd

It sounds like it is not properly adjusted, putting pressure on the throwout bearing the whole time. This will cause premature failure of the TOB.
Try backing off the adjustment a bit and see how it reacts?

Leaking rear seal should not really have a correlation with chattering, you'd notice engine oil leaking from the bottom of the bell housing and possibly a slipping clutch as the friction material becomes contaminated with oil

Will try backing off the adjustment nut to 1.5mm and see what happens.

Does anyone know the difference (other than cable/hydraulic) between the turbo and N/A clutches?

Thanks, Jack Byrd

Good question Jack. I know Exedy has two different part numbers for their clutch kits, but not sure of the difference in the specs.

I looked up the Exedy specs. Clutch disc is slightly larger as well as shaft diameter on turbo.  Also more spline teeth.

Thanks John, I guess that means an N/A clutch couldn't be the problem.  It's s PITA because if it wears any, it won't disengage.  There is no freeplay and it releases about an inch from the bottom.  I have to be careful when changing gears to be sure the pedal is on the floor when changing gears.to prevent crashing.

Thanks again, Jack Byrd

Maybe PO replaced the cable with the wrong one... too short?

It can, but I haven't taken the time to back it off as Matt suggested.  Hopefully will be able to soon.
