Gotta Break the Ignition Lock
« on: March 27, 2010, 03:46:00 PM »

So,
I'm at the girlfriend's house.  She broke my ignition key in the door lock.
The car's unlocked but now I don't have a key to start the car.
She's got to get her car out of the garage (which the Capri is parked in front of) at 7 a.m. tomorrow - Sunday morning.

I've never broken an ignition lock before so can someone who knows please tell me how to do it ?

Do I cram a screwdriver in the lock and turn the whole works with vice grips / wrench ?

Any ideas for me ?  Please ?

Dave

How do I get the ignition cylinder out ?
Normally this is something I would probably be able to just work at and eventually figure out but you have to remember that :
A) it's dark out,
B) I've only got a handful of tools in the trunk and
C) It's 10:15 Saturday night and I've got to have the car moved by 7 Sunday morning.

Assuming I can get the ignition lock out, can I unlock the steering lock and start the car ?

Thanks Bryan............

She got the door unlocked so I can get in the car.

Half the key is stuck deep inside the door lock and the other half is still on the key chain.

I've no doubt it will be a lot of work to get the key out the door lock so I figure that at this point it's better to concentrate on the ignition lock so I can get the thing started and moved.

well yeah but your not going to like it lol.. and bro after to night get her some tools you know a drill and bits and box of some sort of cheep tools lol... if your dead serious just get a hammer and break the lower part of that tumber housing to get the tumbler out and you can start it that way   kind of same thing as a slide hammer

So I have to get the ignition cylinder out before I can start the car ?

How do the car thieves do it ?  I would've thought the big screwdriver idea might do it ?

So I'm probably looking at pulling the black plastic off the bottom of the steering column.
Then smash the shit out of the bottom of the steering column to break the aluminum so I can get the ignition cylinder out

Then I'll be able to start the car with a screwdriver, right ?

Will the steering wheel still be locked or will the removal of the ignition cylinder unlock the steering wheel so I can turn it?

no it does not have to come out but something has to break before it will turn to start the car  i think thiefs break the igintion with a slide hammer which rips out the tumbler i would think then a screw driver will start it  if i set here long enought i might figure how to pick the lock lol
