turbo gone bad again.....
« on: May 10, 2010, 09:37:00 AM »

Hello Team Capri...I call on your superior knowlegdge once more.  Per the last discussion about this time last year I had a turbo problem in which you lead me to getting my turbo rebuilt.  I had done so through turbochargers.com.  Unfortunately I think it has gone bad again.  The car is smoking, no power and the boost gauge does not work at all. There is grinding in the engine.  I had garage kept my car in the winter and just brought it back out about a month ago...now this.  I don't want to believe it but did my turbo go bad? I can't believe I paid $500 plus for the first rebuilt and it did not last one year.  Do you know of a more reliable  turbocharger rebuilder....possibly in Illinois that will not cost that much.  I'm not made out of money and I just saved up enough money for a new top ....but this happened...please help.

I'm no expert but if you hear noises from the engine itself I don't think thats the turbo. Correct me if I'm wrong but that sounds like a bigger problem. If its your turbo making the noise from what I've read it could be the turbine.

yeah just check and see if its the turbo or the engine... take of the j pipe and see if the turbine wheel has play in it.. its a simple job and this well get us a better answer.. i have had all kinds of turbo problems and only one was the builders fault and i mean it was IHI bad center..

You could replace it with a known good turbo...maybe check your oil pressure, if you're running empty on oil or have rod knock and no oil pressure you can blow turbos that way.

Any warranty on the rebuild?

I have a spare used unit in Joliet. Are you close.? I could come over and look. Noise from the engine isn't a Turbo it's an engine.

Hi all...no wonder I have not received a reply...my email address was wrong...suppose to be annie.151@hotmail.com.  I had taken the turbo off and notice that it had alot of play. It looked like it somehow broke off track and the spindle(if that's what you called it) scraped the side...so it is the turbo.  I had emailed turbochargers they said they will look at it...if it's defective/they will fix it.  I sent it to them and they recieved it on 5/21.  I got a phone call 5 days later asking for a vin number, when I asked for the status..they said they call me back.  I got tired of waiting for a phone call so I called a week later (6/2/2010) only for them to tell me that a clip got stuck in the turbo and that it's not their fault.  How can a clip fall into the turbo?  I had driven this car for at least 5 months before I had this problem.  As far as I see I'm being taken advantage of??????? why would they not call me ...but ask for a vin# to look for a turbo for me if it was not their fault?

I have attached pictures from turbochargers that they say caused the turbo to go bad.  I do not recogize the washer that he is holding in his hand.  Can you guys be the Judge and let me know if you recognize the piece he is holding in his hand....where did this come from?

this is the damage that was done to the charger..

I cannot see damage to both the compressor AND turbine from FOD (foreign object damage)

Where did they say the washer was? If it was on the turbine side, it'd chew up the turbine bad, I've seen many pictures of this occurring before. But never on the turbine side. Sounds fishy.

they said it was on the compressor side.  I put the rebuilt turbo on the capri in april of last year and driven it for about 3 mths before storing it for the winter....brought her out in March of this year and driven it until the end of May...why did this foreign piece suddenly cause this damage? I did not touch the engine at all after I had installed the turbo.  I would like more statements from other turbo specialists to go back to them with.  I think they took me for a ride.  When I first had a problem with my turbo...it was smoking excessively but I still had boost and there was no play when I took it off...I believed it was just the seals.  When I sent the turbo in they said they needed to rebuild the whole thing....I should have known better.

If it was on the compressor side then how did the turbine side become so damaged? The whole shaft of the turbo appears to have sheared.

Ok when I emailed them back he said it was on the turbine side......UGGGGGGH!  It was warrantied for a year but they say it does not cover this type of damage caused by this washer.  Has anyone seen this type of washer before?  Can something like that come through the engine to the turbo somehow?  I think I am fighting a loosing battle but I am not giving up just yet.  In the meantime I need to get my Baby back on the road.  Does anyone know where I can get a turbo?  What is the part number for the turbo?
