WTF?
« on: August 19, 2009, 04:04:00 PM »

so I started draining the fluid getting ready to pull the axles and get everything in order. I drain the fluid and pull the wheel off.

As I did I found this that made me say WTF??

I guess as perfect as this car is I cant complain if this is the only thing I could find wrong with it. I guess they didnt want to buy or couldnt find a outter tie rod end.

They filled the torn boot with grease, wrapped it in plastic, then went crazy with the duct tape as you can see.

Gonna replace both outer tie rod ends.

Any help on anything I should look for or do to yank these halfshafts out?

the axles are a sonuvagun to get out. Best way to free them is to leave the hub & rotor attached, and use it as a kind of a slide hammer to ram the axles out. Disconnect the balljoints, strut, tierod...you'll see what I mean when you get to it.

i just did the axel on my sons corolla, it had a little clip on the inside that needed to be popped out. i just had to get a pry-bar on each side and pop it out. putting back in the new one i needed to give it a love tap with a block of wood. it was not that bad but i would not want to accomplish it again anytime soon

Be very careful prying against the diff housing on an XR2 tranny. The metal is very thin there.

Whats funny about that pic is just a little while ago I was on the festiva board and a guy there was talking about doing the same thing with one of his ball joints...

Sounds like he wants stranded to me.
