Boost Gauge
« on: March 26, 2011, 05:08:00 PM »

Thanks for letting become a member of TeamCapri. I just rescued my 91 XR2 from the junkyard waiting to be crushed. I was able to put a battery and a ign. switch in it and started right up. The question I have is the boost gauge don't show any boost and the AC compressor does not come on. Can someone help or point me in the right direction?

The boost gauge will not show boost until you are driving the car around and putting significant load on the engine. You won't get it to boost at idle or parked.

If you are driving it around and its still not showing boost, the gauge sender could be disconnected, or the turbo might not be functioning properly.

As for the A/C: chances are there is a leak in the system and the refrigerant has drained out. If its never been serviced this is common. There must be some refrigerant in the system, else it will not kick on for safety reasons.

And welcome to TeamCapri! Glad you found us here

He meant, ON the gas, the car won't make boost unless you have it just about floored, or on a pretty steep hill.

I was able to remove the heat shield off to see the rod going to the wastegate and applied air pres. to the hose connecting and the rod moves about 3/8 to 1/2". Is the boost gauge mech. or elec.?

Did you drive the car under heavy load to prove if the gauge is actually at fault?  You're messing with the wastegate there, most turbos have those to control boost pressure.  The gauge itself is fed from vacuum on a sensor on the firewall.

Can you identify where the sen is located and does the vac. line run to the gauge in the dash. I have floored it out on the road.

the boost gauge is electrical, on the back o the firewall there is like a puck-like looking solenoid that has a vac line going to it and some wires thats the boost gauge.

Josh,

The puck-like sensor is the overboost switch. The boost gauge sender is rectangular.

In the following picture, it is the sensor directly above the puck-shaped sensor with the arrow pointing to it.

Check to see the vacuum line is connected to it.
If it is still not boosting, then you are not driving it hard enough, lol? A turbo requires substantial throttle input and RPM's to build boost.

Thanks guys! I should be able to run a wire inside the car hooked to the gauge then to a VOM, drive down the road and under heavy excelaration and see a voltage change?
