well my 17 year old has gotten the tuner bug. so now he wants to trade his 94 corolla for some kind of 2 door sports car.

give me some ideas that i can float at him

how about a mercury capri ? i heard they are quick little sports cars that are grat on gas ... If he does pic that car tell him to check out this AMAZING FORUM called Teamcapri.com Its the best site around for such an amazing car :)

Hey Gost! You're taking me down memory lane. Back when my oldest daughter was about 10yrs old, I was out car shopping. We were walking around a Chevy dealership(heaven forbid). We came upon a cute little powder-blue Geo-Metro convertible. My daughter would not get out of that car until I promised that one like it would sitting under her bottom when she turned sixteen. Go for the Gost-o.  Gus

get him a civic ex with some mods done to it. nothing to crazy to kill himself in but enough to get him started.

I would say TSI but you know how big a handful those cars are. turbo + teenager = casket
look at how many teens were and still are being killed by the neon srt4's

May I suggest a Honda Civic VTI-R EG model. Lots of tuner parts and alot of potential to become a great project car.
Or a Toyota Corolla Levin BZR, not too many after market parts but great motor.
If he's quirky maybe a Kei class pocket convertible like a Suzuki Cuppocino or a Honda Beat.
Non turbo Nissan Silvia, relatively cheap and sturdy car. Rear wheel drive too! Or if you want to be nostalgic an 240Z S30 model. They used to trump Porches of the day around the race track.
Ford Laser? Great because of interchangeable parts with the Capri.  
I wouldn't mind a Mazda MX5 NA8 with full suspension mods.
Original MGB?

Fiero would be good!  Really fun to drive, and unless you drop in a V8, not to fast for a 17 year old.  There is also an endless array of body/styling kits available as well.  drivetrain is easy to fix as it's basic GM.  My suggestion would be an 84 GT, as that was the finest year - they finally worked the bugs out, before giving the car the ax.

i had a fiero once ... turned it into a dune buggy ... stripped down to frame made roll cage lifted the suspension made it into one hella fast dune buggy ... raced real good on the sand races

before i bought the capri there was a LT-1 RX7 here that i was really thinking about getting. it was fast as hell...

he likes the eclipse but each one we looked at so far had so many issues. just wish people would say the truth on craigslist so u would not waist your time going there
