cooling issue
« on: October 24, 2009, 09:03:00 AM »

my fan is working backwards....

turns on when starting the car. when car is at operating temps..i would say aroung 175deg it stops..if i turn off car and start it..on then will turn off at some time..

it use to run all the time. my relay was busted up so i swapped it out...then i noticed it starting to do this. it could of been doing it before but my drive to work is only like 10 mins and not real stops. i went on a 30 drive and noticed the temps high and it was at night when they are normally below 175.

i have tried 2 different relays..does same thing.

thoughts?

I ran a jumper wire from the constant ground input on the relay harness to the ground input on the fan. It comes on when I turn the car on and stays on. Keeps my temps right at the half point.

Stock though it would stay right at 3/4 before the fan would kick on which is normal for these wierd cars. Joe also told me another trick if you wanted to keep the stock relay hooked up. Just disconnect the coolant temp sensor wire from the thermostat housing and the fan will also stay on.

Maybe the sensor in the thermo housing is bad.. also came across something while crusing the Wreckers today...  a Ford Published vacuum and electrical trouble shooting guide for the Capri.

the one on the thermostat housing pointing toward the driver side fender...the one that is on the head behind the housing pointing back is the temp gauge

i disconnected the sensor today and did the same thing....runs at start up then cuts off sometime while driving.

maybe its the fan cutting off when it gets hot?

gost, see the wire running up to the fitting on the head.. where the upper radiator hose connects to the head .?.?..

pull it. your fan should run constantly as long as the cars running.. or in the on position....

i pulled it off the water neck and it does same thing..so i am thinking the fan is going out when getting hot. i just was to hard wire it so i can tell 100%. i will let my car idle for 20 mins and never shut off..drive it around and i can see the temps hit 175 so i know its off by then. when its cooler out here it never hits that temp

I will run out and grab a pick for ya. I was also reading the fsm and found that there is some kind of overload circuit that is suppose to have control over the fan if it pulls to much of a load.
