quick question
« on: November 20, 2009, 05:58:00 PM »

Hi all-
I'm getting ready to replace my exhaust manifold and I was wondering about the "cork sport down pipe" I keep reading about, what is it, and what does it do? Worth the money?
Thanks for the input about grinding on the turbo and manifold, Joe! I'm going to try to find a bit for my cordless tommorrow when I'm out and about. One more question Joe-does the guy you speak of with B6 engines packed up in grease, have any more?

enjoy your weekend guys! HAPPY TURKEY DAY!

its a larger better airflowing pipe that comes off the turbo. the better the flowing larger pipe the less strain on the turbo for venting the pressure, which means a faster spoil up. but if ur replacing the manifold and not the downpipe, this part wouldnt help as this is after the turbo and not before it, but it sure cant hurt to get it anyway.

The CS downpipe requires some modification when installing it on a B6T. Someone just posted not too long ago what has to be done.

Is it the exhaust pipe leading down to the cat? Kind a small j-pipe that flanges right up to the cat?

yes, that is a turbo down pipe. Below is a example of a turbo down pipe, not the one belonging to the capri. but it comes off the turbo and into the cat.

Thanks Anthony-I already have that done! I was just making sure of what it was. When I replace the manifold, I will also use the new turbo, It has about 70,00 less miles than the one I currently have on there, might as well, eh?

the first pic is the flange at the turbo and the other two are of the clearance between the DP and the oil pan closest to the tranny...

i no longer run this downpipe as i have gone to mitsubishi turbochargers, but i do remember it gives the small turbo a huge kick in the pants..

also it will run no less than ten psi boost with this downpipe.. meaning if you remove your boost controller completely it will push 10 psi not 8 anymore..

if i remember right it was a PITA to install... you do need to take quite a bit off the oil pan with a grinder too... theese come with just a pipe at the end allowing for custom exhaust to be welded on...
give yourself an entire saturday to do this ...

and if you do decide to put one on.. you need to go for at least one ride down the street with an open downpipe  (no exhaust) its loud, but its awesome.. not as loud as a car with open headers ,its muffled some from the turbo..
but dont go looking for a cop to show it to
.. trust me

i highly recommend this DP.. its expensive, and takes hours to put on the car... but man it makes theese little cars fly...  Joe...

oh yeah.. as for the engines...
http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-NOS-91-MERCURY-CAPRI-1-6L-SHORTBLOCK-ASSEMBLY_W0QQitemZ390120968960QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item5ad5059300

i run one everyday at 18psi boost... great luck so far... and i bid 350.00 and won ...shipping should be 150.00 ...its freight shipping...

the best thing i found to remove it is wd-40.. besides your rubbing down the damn thing with wd-40, that can't be a bad thing...

oh, and one more thing, thats not oil all over these shortblocks... its whats called cosmoline...its a wax like substance... its so nothing rusts during shipping and storage...

the reason i know that is... i used to  work at a motorcycle shop assembling them out of crates
like steel, bolted together crates... and new motorcycles are the same way, covered in cosmoline...   ...Joe...

as always, thanks for the stuff! Hey Joe, I happen to know where there is a talon turbo 4x4 sitting and has been for a long time, does it have a mitsu turbo on it? I could probobly track down the dude and get it for next to nothing.
I'm sitting here wondering about the motor that youy led me to. lol
mmm...
how much money do I want to sink into the thing...
ghost-the only one that rebuilds turbos around here is in Seattle Tacoma area, and he quoted me $$$$350 on a rebuild. I thought that was kind of high and am thinking about upgrading anyway.
Any one got a bigger better one laying around? possible leads?

first, you dont port and polish a block....

second, this is a brand new from ford shortblock assembly... these are left overs from assembly id think...
this would be bolting in a NEW motor...
new pistons, new rings, new bearings, new rods new crank...

all without having to pay a machine shop to punch it out for ya...
or the price of the above mentioned...
or the headache of plastiguage to set bearings ...
or the price of the tools and supplies it takes to rebuild an engine...

you cant make a shortblock with your old parts, and some new ones for less than 500.00

how much do you think a set of pistons for a b6t cost?? and rings? how about a main bearing set???

for a new engine for a capri this is the cheapest ive found....

this is truely starting at 0 miles...

and ive pushed over 20 psi with a mitsubishi turbo through mine without a problem...
