Joe or Rocketman- When we spoke the last time about the high comp engine, Joe you said I might have to change the harmonic balancer? Is there anything else i would have to change? Does the short block come with an oil pump? I am seriously thinking about a new engine in the XR2. I have been in contact with the gentleman. I have just a few questions about the install before committing. Any advice you guys, or anyone else that might ha ve done the swap, might have is greatly appreciated. Summer is almost upon up and it would be nice to have it up to parr! Joe, what kind of turbos do you have laying around? anything at all that would upgrade my car? I haven't been around for awhile, the 85 5.0 convert took up alot of my time and money! Sure is fast though! 90,000 original miles, sat for awile so it needed some tender loving care, you know all the im crap taken off, new carb, new exhuast, the list goes on!

You can put in higher CR pistons without changing the engine, that would be a lot cheaper. Buy some OEM pistons for the capri or the miata, order for the nonturbo automatic for 9.0:1 or manual for 9.4:1 (fwiw I got a set of Miata pistons and rods on ebay for $50ish, one of the pistons had a flaw so I ended up not using it. You can find them though)

Might be worth grabbing a junkyard engine from an n/a and re-ringing it, especially if you have the small nose crank. Getting one from a later model you'd have all the necessary parts and not have to go hunting.

If you want serious power I'd get some forged rods and pistons, you really won't ever have to worry about the engine then... Theres a dealer on ebay that offers carillo rods + weisco pistons for $845 less than half the price of a shortblock and much better parts as compared to OEM. Get any CR you want too

Hey Matt i think he was thinking of buying the n.o.s. shortblock on eBay for a couple hundred. The guy who sells them is not to far from me and I considered buying one myself if the 3 motor doesn't turn out to be forged.

Can't beat a complete oem shortblock for $400 brand new.

yeah, the non turbo one on ebay is the one i am looking at, the same one Joe used. I spoke with him and he still has some, I am just wondering about what all else is involved with the swap. Your .05 is still worth something!!

One more thing, anyone else ever have trouble with oil coming out of the BOV, i switched turbos and it is still doin it, we are going to block off one end of the oil catch so it is not recircin' it and see if that stops it. If not I will send the turbo out for proffesional rebuilding. That is why I am thinking about the new short block.

if you are still running your breather tube from the valve cover to your intake pipe you will always have that problem. Just dissconnect it and put a vacuum cap on the intake end and a breather filter on the other.

We just ran a compression check on the motor

1= 143.75
2= 137.5
3= 151.25
4= 158.75

So according to the book it all checks out in the "ok" range.
We also stopped the recircking of the oil catch and blocked off the other vacumme, we will see if that does any good.
Might be a valve that is going bad on number 2?

You will have the problem until you pull the intercooler hoses and intercooler off. You have to clean the inside of the hoses with a good carb cleaner to get all the oil residue out. Then fill the inside of the intercooler with gasoline and let it sit for a while and slosh it around from time to time.

That will get all the oil and and residue out of the intercooler. Once you do all this you will not have the oil problem any longer unless you blow a turbo seal.

thanks, I'll do that and see what happens, might be a good time to look into a FMIC. I found a good turbo rebuilding company out of AZ, called G-Pop shop. They specialize in rebuilding and upgrading turbos. I think I'l try cleaning it out and see what happens, then, like you said if it needs more than that, send it out.

Oh one more thing, when I decelerate, like after running it through a couple gears, it blows out a big cloud of white smoke, that dissipates very quickly. On hard accelleration and normal driving nothing, but once in awhile it just blows out this horrible cloud, there is no coolant loss or noticable oil loss. Think that might be from the piping also? Man, it makes it look bad, and I just cringe. Never did anything like it before. Any ideas????

White smoke is usually coolant, blue is oil and black is fuel.
Reading back I swear it sounds like a turbo going bad. You would have both oil and coolant at the same place. It fits your symptoms.

The turbo I took off and replaced, about 45 miles or so ago, was shot. I think it was holding on with 1 bolt and a partial, cracks and leaks, I was surprised it ran at all, I am hoping all this other shit is just an after effect. When we clean it all out, the truth will come out, I guess. If need be I will rebuild it stronger than it was before! (kind of like a super hero) Then it will be off to the great unknown, up,up  and away.

Need more details on your compression check - checked when warmed up? did you squirt oil into each cyl and re-check to see if its rings or valves?

Each number individually is within 'spec' but the fact that #2 is so low and #4 is so high worries me a little. Maybe have someone do a leakdown test? Almost sounds like some of your rings could be worn

Thanks Matt- the compression check was ran 4 times on all cylinders, so the numbers I wrote are averages. The car was warm. We did not yet do the oil check and see if its  valves or rings. We just finished up cleaning the pipes and intercooler, now there is no oil coming up through the BOV, but continues to blow white smoke out the exhaust. Almost like coolant is leaking from somewhere. Quick question, can I bypass the coolant leading into the turbo to see if that is where the steam/smoke is coming from? For a short time just to check it out, that is.
