Is the engine out of a mazda protoge' 1.6 a B6T?
Man, I was driving my car yesterday and all of the sudden, after running it through the gears, I noticed a sudden loss of power and it is running real rough, kind of like it lost timing. It just had a new timing belt put on... Any suggestions on how to check it?

IIRC the protege never came with a 1.6. Always a 1.8 sohc or dohc depending on the model

yes it can be swapped but its not easy

The MX3 got a version of the 1.6 but it wasnt the same exact thing

Check for vacuum or boost leaks. #1 cause of problems like you describe

thanks guy, I will check for a vacumme leak tommorrow. Matt-I still have not yet installed all the hardware, I just bought a universal BOV from siliconeintakes. If I was going to like rebuild a motor and start with a stock 323 1.6 motor, do I have to change the crank along with the pistons to change the compression levels? I am thinking about building a new motor for my XR2, so I know really know what all has been done. I am hesitant about the motor in my car because of all the miles on the speedo. Mabe with enough money and time and a new motor I could run with the big boyz???

Hey Kelly! Your best off looking for another motor or buy a new short block off of Ebay for $400. If you wrecking yard hunting for cars after august'91 build date or familiarize your-self the difference between a large snout crank and a small snout crank. your car should have a large snout cran. the short blocks on Ebay are small snout and will require you to get a pulley and other related hardware for that crank. mucho thanks for the info guys, the reason I was asking about the protoge' was, I found a rebuilt head on line that stated 1.6 motor out of a mazda protoge', I am asking for more info. It was proffesionally done but not installed. Oh by the way, the reason for the lack of power in the XR2 was one of the f#**^ing injectors power source was hanging off the motor, lost the keeper piece, luckily my Beamer buddy found it and had a keeper on hand!! I always immediately think the worst. I will compression chck the motor! Probobly nothing even wrong with it! I just want to be secure before the boost. Thinkin' bout

gus- what do I punch into ebay to look for a shortblock?

Hey I'm getting ready to remove the power amp from the car to make room for gauges, anyone want one, you know for the premium sound package?

Hey here's a little sumptin, my car came with the front rotors and brake calipers off of a 1989 1/2 mitsubishi galant VR4 non-turb, and on the back -rotors and calipers off of a 1995 ford escort wagon. It stops well and they seem to work just fine, so far iI ain't run into any one.

I dont think they're VR4 rotors - those are too big to be used as an upgrade. Congrats though - you have one of very few Capri's with upgraded brakes. Perhaps the only one with upgraded rears.

The front should have the Galant (266mm) rotors and 14-22v Escort calipers.

I'm curious about the rear, the escort never shared a common bolt pattern. I dont know of any upgrade for the FWD, i'd like to see how they did it. I've heard of upgraded rears on a GTX, but they're setup more like the front so its a lot easier to work with

Hey Kelly! Ebay--parts and accessories--'91-'94 mercury capri. An outfit in Texas has them. Joe@ RCI customs has one in his car and I have a full motor from them in Janis. Full motor is no longer available. Don't know how many short-blocks are left but am planning on buying two or three soon. On your brakes: the fronts sound like the correct up-grade? the rears I question along with Rocket. Gus
