intercooler ideas?
« on: March 16, 2010, 06:02:00 PM »

I'm looking through ebay for a FMIC kit. Can I get a cooler with outlets on both ends and make it work, or should I specifically look for a similar one, with the openings on the same side?
I'm going to try my damnest to save the AC and Cruise. Should I go with 2" or 2 1/2"?
Also I read somewhere, (probobly here somewhere), that an RX7  MAF the air thing with help to increase air flow, is this correct? I think there is a rx7 at the local junk yard.
There is a rx7 intercooler set on ebay currently bid at $70, with all the piping and connectors, the whole shebang. Would that work?

Cruise is easy to keep. A/C may be a little tougher but not impossible.

Most people have had best success with a 27" core intercooler with in/out on opposite sides.

I would highly recommend staying away from OEM intercoolers, unless its from a Mitsubishi Starion/Conquest. They're great but have small piping. (can be customized though)

If I remember right, my intercooler measures (core) 27.5x11x3 its a pretty common size, it will fit well behind the bumper. Taller = better.

People have run 2.5" piping from universal kits. 2.25 wouldn't be bad.

Here's how mine was setup:

You'll also want a 1.5" (is it 1.5 or 1.75?)to 2.5" 90* reducer/elbow to connect the stock turbo to the piping. You can get them from Siliconeintakes

YMMV, just my $.02

i like their products and pricing is good.

order a vacuum hose kit...ton of hose and its thick and strong. its also the place i bought my reducers for my intercooler kit.

On ebay I know the intercooler/piping from cx racing is probibly your best bang for your buck. I have a friend who's using there kit on a 900whp turbo camaro so personally I know it's decent stuff. Also if your looking to do it right and have a better throttle/boost response you should keep the turbo to intercooler side close to the turbo outlet size (probibly 2 Inch) and match the intercooler outlet side to the throttle body inlet (2 1/4-2 1/2 inch)

Going to any larger piping and a larger intercooler will help throttle response lots, the stock piping is utter crap lol

FMIC is one of the better mods I've ever done (engine and drivetrain swaps aside)

Yeah, I had fleeting thoughts of trying to keep the exsisting piping, that just got flushed twice, to make sure it hit irac. Thanks for all the input guys!!!

Necro'd.

Would it be worth it to use an intercooler that's about four inches taller than your fmic, rocket, or is there something to occupy that space?
