Gear Shift length
« on: July 17, 2021, 07:34:35 PM »

Hi All
I have parted out a couple of Capri's, a 1990 Sa and a 1991 SA both SOHC.
I have kept both gear shifts assemblies.
I decided to make myself a short shifter, but I did not want to cut the gear shifts I had so a fellow Capri enthusiast supplied me a couple of broken ones to play with. The bottom bit that holds the bushes had broken off.
Both of these gear shifts he sent were shorter from the top from the ball to the thread by around 50mm (2").
Long = 28 cm from top of the ball to the end of the thread.
Short = 23 cm from top of the ball to the end of the thread.
Has any one come across this before.

Yes, that is how the "Short Throw" is achieved.

The shifter is the fulcrum, and moving the ball closer to the shift knob makes the portion between the ball and the linkage longer, reducing the throw. The tradeoff is more shifting force, however.

The length of movement the transmission needs to shift remains the same, you are just changing the ratio of the shift lever itself.

Yes I understand all that,
BUT....
The distance between the ball and the bottom where the plastic bushes go are the same on both the long and the short gear levers. Its just the top that is longer by 50 mm.

I've run into different shaped, length shifters in Capri's, have no clue why. All appeared stock. and the distance between the ball and the bushings was the same. I've considered cutting the bushing part off and inserting a spacer to make a short throw shifter.

Ah, I see. I have seen some OEM shifters that have been shortened, without changing the throw at all. That could be all there is to it. Someone's personal preference I guess
