Mystery button
« on: September 14, 2020, 01:26:10 PM »

Hello all!

I just bought a 1991 Base Capri a few days ago (it's my first one) and I'm working on restoring it.  It's in pretty good shape but does have a few quirks that I'm working out.

On the dash, near the clock is a green button that I'm trying to figure out what function it serves.  I have a hard top for the car, and this button is next to the rear defrost button for the hard top.  It doesn't have a label and is just green, and it doesn't light up or seem to do anything when I press it.  Anyone know what this does?

Welcome to Capri ownership!

Sounds like something someone added.

A picture is really necessary.

Welcome!
I’ve seen a few over here with a green button on the dash. Here, it’s part of the original “modification” to get German registration.
It’s called the “Nebelschlussleuchte” and turns on a brighter taillight in thick fog.
Could it be for after-market fog lights?

Not sure how to directly post a pic, but here is an Imgur link to what I'm talking about.

When pressed it doesn't seem to do anything so not sure what it's wired to.  I may just have to take the dash apart and trace it.

That's interesting that it might be as JimmyGermany said - a modification to get German registration.  This car has Ford emblems / badges on it instead of Mercury badges which I thought was weird too.

It looks to be a factory switch that someone added a green sticker to. What's behind the sticker?
I believe it might be the AC switch to engage the air conditioning system

Seeing the picture, it does look like the AC switch with a sticker over it. Perhaps covered because the system was removed?
I mean, if I push my AC switch, nothing happens, but that’s because the AC is knackered. 😜

Heya everyone.  So, it is the AC switch and it works!  Thanks for steering me in the right direction.  No idea why there is a green sticker on it, but at least now I know what it is.  :)

This is a common location for the additional fog light switch I was talking about.
Left hand panel.
