So I ahould be able to get us a budget plug and play ecu
« on: July 16, 2020, 02:05:39 AM »

So I talked to the guys at speedyefi.com and Isaac from there said if I can get him are cars pinouts which I don't know what those are or a factory service manual which I totally don't have. That he could make us a plug and play ecu setup for are capris. Can any one help me out. Bye the way check out speedyefi.com because they make plug and plays for escort gt and miata which I know both are like cusins to are cars. Please help because I know I would like a tune able plug and play ecu

Here's the issue with PlugNPlay ecus for the Capri:

The VAF unit should be deleted, because an aftermarket ECU doesn't need it. The fuel pump switch & IAT sensor live in it. So if you delete the VAF, you'll need to wire in IAT and fuel pump circuit. I see that speedyefi has a solution for the Miata to run an IAT with the miata VAF plug.

The stock ignition system, which sucks and should be upgraded if you're running an aftermarket ECU, runs nearly independent of the ECU. So to upgrade the ignition system, you have to delete the stock system & wire in all new ignition system. This includes a new crank trigger & cam angle sensor to give the ECU a high resolution tach signal for things like sequential ignition

The stock fuel injectors are hard wired for batch injection in the injection loom, which most modern aftermarket ECUs can do sequential injection, so you'll have to add wires to the harness for the extra injection channels.

So right there you're not using parts of the stock harness, and are having to add in another 15-20 wires for new sensors / injection / ignition control. Not so PlugNPlay.

If you're retaining the stock distributor it's not as big of a deal, but the stock system has so many compromises that IMO it's just not worth it for a PlugNPlay set up.
There's no "good" option. Unless someone standardizes crank triggers & coilpack/cop setups, and makes a custom engine harness. But that's $$$$

The Escort GT ecu has partial ignition control of the distributor.
The Miata ecu has full control of the ignition, it has coilpacks and a low resolution crank trigger/cam angle sensor.
So it's a bit easier for them to make the stock harness work
One of the Capri guys I know is going to attempt to use an early 90s Miata harness to get around these issues, but it is a RWD car and I question its fitment into the Capri, plus the Miata uses a handful of different plugs/sensors that will all need swapped over. And also needs integrated into the chassis harness.

Sorry this isn't meant to shoot the idea down, I have gone over all the logistics in the past, I myself was going to build PnP Megasquirt units but again using the stock harness with a fully capable standalone ECU really limits your setup. See this thread: http://teamcapri.com/forum/index.php/topic,2924.msg131772.html

You could send this post to the speedyefi guys and see if they have any solutions.

Would really be nice to upgrade, but not cheap power.

It would be really nice to have a simple solution.

All good I'll send that thread to speedy and would a wireharness like they do for engine swaps for so many cars be a good solution. If so I could try to get that into the works as well. And ive tried to email you about any chiped ecus for the last year or so. Do you happen to have any extra for my daily or would I have to buy one to send you one. O ps thanks for all the info on this and over the years. You are a valubal part of the Capri organization rocketman

The ecu fully controls dwell and spark timing in the Escort GT and the ecu does not control the distributor. In fact the base of the distributor is identical to the Miata unit with the same electrical 4 wire plug and 4-1 hall effect sensor.

Personally i wouldn't bother with sequential control of the injectors, bank control is just fine. Only thing you'll accomplish with that upgrade is slightly reducing emissions and smoother idle. Once the rpms go over 2K or your under boost, there is no benefit due to the injectors having to operate beyond the time the intake valves are open anyway.

Like Matt said, it won't be a simple plug and play, but If i was using an aftermarket ecu, I would reuse the stock wire harness. There will be extra wires left unused that can later be repurposed for other functions after you initially get the car running. It'll be alot easier then trying to modify a miata harness to work with our cars and the mods can be done to the stock harness one upgrade at a time.
