Coolant Temperature Switch Confusion
« on: December 10, 2019, 08:44:52 PM »

I know that the factory service manual uses weird terminology and I need a new "Coolant Temperature Switch" because my fan is turning on at inconsistent

Trying to replace it, I've bought 3 different coolant sensors/switches and none of them come close to fitting where the coolant temperature switch bolts in and I'm tired of buying and returning parts and just want to know what I need to buy to plug the hole in my thermostat housing. Here's what I've tried so far

It doesn't have to be an autozone part, I just have one a couple blocks from my house and it's convenient

The first one you linked is the ECU's temperature sensor the CLT
The 2nd one you linked looks like the fan switch, but it should be a standard metric thread not a NPT or whatever they have listed
The 3rd one you linked is the temp gauge sensor

This is what appears to be the correct fan switch on the Autozone website: https://www.autozone.com/cooling-heating-and-climate-control/cooling-fan-switch-radiator/duralast-a-c-switch-tu211/195645_128894_0

But the price at $44 is insane

Here's the part at RockAuto for $10.62

Yeah, it looks like an M14x1.5 threaded hole, but I was getting desperate enough to try and buy what was what the cooling system article calls it. after I'd accidentally fried the old sensor with MAP gas trying to remove the stuck bolts on the thermostat housing
Thanks for RA link too, a couple extra days shipping is worth not paying $35 extra

Follow up question, where is the sender unit for the dash gauge? I want to replace both, but the manual isn't very clear about where it's actually located and I can't be sure if the gauge was wrong or if the fan switch was bad

It's located in the head, in the back of boss where the thermostat sits.

In this picture you can see it in the upper right, above the 90 degree rubber coolant hose to the bypass pipe.

Wow, I don't think I would have ever found that if I were just listening to the FSM, thank you!

I've bought the one from Rockauto that Rocketman linked for a couple of my Capris.  Work great. Definitely no need to spend $40 some on it.

Just a side note:

Everyone should check and/or change that tiny little elbow. A small split in that caused massive cooling failure and done broke my head gasket as the cyls had no pressure even after stopping within a minute of seeing steam pour out of the engine bay. (due to massive rust and other issues, this car is now my parts car...)

Although that part isn't found off the shelf, i was able to take it in to the auto store and match it up with prebent cooling pipes for the right angle/size. then just cut the bend out of the 'replacement' pipe and installed. worked like a charm.

On my 'new' 91 xr2, I really need to think about swapping out all my cooling hoses... few of them are the original ford stamped parts...
