Ignition lock cylinder
« on: July 28, 2019, 03:48:08 PM »

I have less faith in dealerships and parts stores than ever. I have been fsearching for weeks for an ignition lock cylinder for my 91 capri with no luck. Ford discontinued them and told me there was no cross over part that would work, same answer from parts stores. I call at least a dozen junk yards with little to no luck. I found one online for $99.99 but that seemed ridiculous since every other for part was $19.99. I started searching otherford cars for a part that looked comparable and found that the 91 Ford Cougar has the same part. It fit perfectly and my first problem is now solved.

Moral of the story, dont call Ford!!!

While were at it, steering column is the same as a 1991 Foxbody Mustang. Found this out as the lead tech in my work owns one and everything is identical to my Capri, right down to the airbag module and steering wheel.

Now that's some good information.  Wonder if it comes with tilt?

I don't know if it's the same column. I used a foxbody mustang steering wheel adapter and the slipring for the horn was nearly 5/8" away from where it needed to be. I fabricated a spacer to get it to work.

The steering wheel appears identical, the same design at least was used in many early 90s Ford vehicles - even trucks. But there may be some minor differences

I didnt see much of a difference. The surround on the column is a little bit shaped different because the dash is different.  I noticed the turn signal stock was the exact same. His steering column doesnt have tilt same as ours it comes out at the same angle. Ive heard they removed it because with the airbag for decided it was too dangerous.  The foxbody has tilt in the pre airbag years and ive been trying to get a tilt steering column to try and use it in my car. Ill try and grab some pictures if i can its alittle hard with our shop being so busy. Ill look up part numbers might be alittle hard.
