H/V/A/C question
« on: March 11, 2019, 10:25:00 AM »

Question:  Do the flapper doors on the ventilation system have seals?

Problem:  My heat can't keep up because even when the system is set to recirculate, cold air continues to comes in at the defroster vents and the vents at each end of the dash.

I think they have foam seals around the doors, but I'm not positive. That stuff likes to disintegrate with time.

Could it be a broken linkage? I know one of the plastic links in the system tends to fail, Russ had a metal one available

They have foam seals. My wife's 94 NA was bought new and small foam pieces started blowing out of the vents when it was around 10-12 years old.

That's kinda what I figured.  Not looking forward to taking the dash apart to look for a cure.

Rocketman, the linkage is fine.  I was gonna put that in my original question, but forgot it.  The metal link works great as a replacement, I put one on my original N/A.

Guess I've got to figure out how to disassemble the dash. If I can get the A/C working, it will help with that also.

Thanks, Jack Byrd

the good news is the blower box will come out without removing the dash completely. 3 nuts and a few wires, one cable. loosen the dash on the passenger side and you should be able to wiggle it out. I just took mine out like that.

the bad news, I was just looking at mine trying to replace that flapper seal. I don't think the flapper will come out of the box. It looks like the plastic was molded around the door pivot.

I've got my entire interior (dash included ) removed right now, cleaning up from a mouse infestation.

:D Yeah, crap, nests, a couple carcasses.  I'll look my box over some more before I reinstall it, If I see a way to get it apart I'll let you know.

crap!

Update on my blower box. The flapper door does come out! Remove box, then there are 5 spring clips and 1 screw to remove, and the upper and lower halves separate. The door is held to it's shaft by 2 small machine screws. I used some 3/16" self stick foam door/window weatherstrip from the hardware store to renew the seals. I did the central door on the heater box too, since the dash was out and I was looking right at it.

Good luck, hope this helps. Let me know if you want any pictures or have questions.

Great, glad to know it's something that can be done.  Pics would be great for me and for future reference for anyone wanting to fix their heaters.  I've heard a lot of complaints about them over the years.

I can't figure how to post pics here. I could give you a link to a different forum where I have the pics up, if that's allowed here.

I think it's okay to link to other forums.

Wow, very impressive build up.  The HVAC pics were very instructional also.  You're an inspiration.  You should copy that link to the build section of this forum.  Great work.
