Headlight problem

(1/2) > >>

Turtle:
Have a 1993 ( actually Sep. 1992) Capri  The pass side headlight goes up and down using either the headlight switch or lift switch.  Drivers side does nothing.  If I wire direct, the drivers headlight goes up and down.  I installed another headlight motor relay and have the same problem.  20 amp HLM fuse is fine.  My questions are:
1.  What is the problem and fix?
2.  Is there a separate fuse somewhere for each headlight motor?  I did not see one in the electrical diagram.
3.  Where exactly is the plug located?
I saw that there was a plug connection (C239)  between the relay and the motor's plug, that is suppose to be under the dash and above the joint box but I
could not find it.   I figured it may have come loose.  The previous owner said that when the headlight did not come up, he use to just pull on the plug at the
back of the headlight and it would come up.  I tried and it no longer does so I thought that this may have caused C239 to come loose.

chrispoe:
1. Probably an electrical issue

2. There are no other fuses

3. C239 is under/behind the driverside of the dash and I doubt it's the problem.

The most common issue is the contacts in the lift motor's position switch assembly need to be cleaned.
I'd guess pulling on the motor's plug would cause the contacts in the pos swtich to shift enough to make contact and then operate.

Rocketman:
Sounds like the rotary switch in the headlight motor. Just needs to be pulled apart and cleaned. I used to have a picture of it posted somewhere, I can't find it at the moment.

JimmyGermany:
Gentlemen!

Before I start another thread about the troubles of oh-so-nineties headlights ...
@ Rocketman: could you post the picture of the assembly?

I’ve got spare motors lined up, but if all it needs is a clean, then that sounds easy enough. (Famous last words).

Hi James,

Is the photo in this link, on this website, what you are looking for?

I took my buckets out to clean because one came up quickly, the other slowly. The grease on the rotary switch had turned into hard wax-like stuff and was hanging the three contact tabs up away from the contact rings. Cleaned and replaced it all and they work fine.

Resetting the bucket alignment with the rest of the bodywork took a little fiddling...

I hope this helps, good luck!

Steve
