Bronze shifter bushings

10 years ago I replaced the shifter bushings at the lever and transmission with bronze ones.
However I did not replace the bushings on the U-joint that is held together with a peened stud.

Today chasing a shifter buzz I found this:

The nylon bushings were totally gone.

So I used an angle grinder to grind away the peened end of the stud holding the joint together:

Went to the store and purchased a 10mm bolt and self locking nut. 2 of these bushings:

I had to shorten one bushing about 12mm. Then I used a 11/32 drill to slightly enlarge the inner diameter of the bushings to allow the 10mm bolt to fit.  I also drilled out the smaller hole on the U-joint to allow the 10mm bolt to fit since I did not have a shoulder bolt.

Pressed in the bushings and then packed with high temperature wheel bearing grease and grease all bushing surfaces.

Reassemble the u-joint and tighten the bolt and self locking nut to remove all slack in the joint, but allow freedom of movement.

Make sure the threads of the bolt used face the passenger side of the car. If they are allowed the face the driver side, the bolt will hit the lower engine cradle and you will not be able to shift into 1st or 2nd gear. I found this out AFTER reassembling everything, getting cleaned up and preparing for a test drive.

Now all the bushings in the shifter linkage are bronze and will last much longer and handle heat better than the original Nylon ones.

Here is a picture of the final assembly before I gave it a good cleaning.

Nice write-up.

Hi all!
Looking to do the same job.
Apologies for my imperial (SAE) ignorance, but really 11/32 to embiggen the bushing?
That’s less than the 10mm required.
Maybe 13/32? (10.319mm)

Cheers
James

...  not trying to be a know-it-all (I know so very little)
But I need to order anything in SAE dimensions.
Good thing my wife is going to Canada soon - need someone to pick up the stuff I‘ve bought
;-)

greywolf27030:
Bronze bushings are available in metric, no need to drill.
