POWER STEERING
« on: November 09, 2022, 10:06:17 AM »

So my 91 XR2 suddenly lost power steering. No leaks, belt is on, reservoir has fluid, what would be the next step?

Open the cap on the fluid reservoir. Shine a light down into there, then have someone start the car and turn it slowly from full left lock to full right lock, back and forth. Watch the fluid, does it move? Does it bubble? Does your pump make any funny noises, or can you see the pulley walking? Do this for several full rotations of the wheel, and top off the fluid level if it gets low.

If doing this procedure fixes it, then congrats you somehow had some air trapped in the system. In that case, I'd suspect a leak or a bad repair at some point. If that doesn't fix it, then hopefully you spot something out of the ordinary that'll point you in the correct direction.
