1992 Capri n/a-1991 Capri XR2 swap
« on: November 12, 2008, 12:13:00 PM »

Hi
I have a 1992 Capri n/a 97,000 mi. it's one of my daily drivers. I just picked up a 1991 Capri XR2 that 129,000 mi. it was wrecked on the right front. The guy I got it from sold it to me thinking the motor was trash. I just got it running and it seems to be in good shape (other than the wreck and the parts the guy removed)

I'm looking for info so that I can make a swap. I have noticed the n/a has the same wiring harness. But will the instrument cluster and turbo parts plug in and work? If the XR2 wasn't wrecked so bad I would swap the other way.

Any information or websites you could provide would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Hey Shaggy! Though I don't know this to be a fact in our Capris' case, the automakers generally make "one" wiring harness for a model of car. They make it to fit all options and just don't use the unneeded plug sets. Thats why when one checks under their hood and sees extra plugs they don't have the option that uses them. One can have a car with manual windows and door locks but the plugs are there in the harness if you want to later convert to electric. Anotherwards, Pull that Turbomotor and transaxel out and transplant it. The plus for the turbo conversion are there and are the least of your worries.  Good Luck and let us know how you did.  Gus

Thanks Gus
So you feel the instrument cluster should be plug-n-play.
Any thoughts how to check the operation of the Turbo with out driving the car?

Try grabbing the shaft on the intake side of the turbo and moving it around. If there is any perceptable play it's probably near dead.  You can use a bike tire hand pump to check the action of the wastegate.

you're going to want to swap nearly erverything from the xr2 into the n/a...every part of the drivetrain is beefier on the xr2. Someone on the forums here has a list of what all is different... Depending on the damage to the xr2, it might just be easier to use the n/a as a parts car and to fix the xr2.. how bad is the damage?

Hey D! I think Rocketman is glaring because you don't pay much attention. I realize you must be broke and can't afford the payments on attention. But the entire drivetrain is different between an N/A and an XR2. Yes you could bolt just the engine in place but the transmission and axles and brakes are all bigger to withstand the increase in horsepower and stopping the car.  Gus.
