92 Capri XR2 Stumbles when around 2500 to 3000 RPM
« on: November 16, 2017, 05:09:39 PM »

I need some assistance,  my car is stumbling at around 2500 to 3000 RPM.  You can push the accelerator and make it go past.  I have replaced the TPS, distributor, rotor button and cap, wires, plugs.  Checked all vacuum lines, oxygen sensor.  I was told by a mechanic that it could be the throttle body shaft moving and causing the TPS to shift out of place.  Any suggestions.  Thanks

Have you tried pulling codes to see if anything is present?

yeah, put it on a code reader and it does not code anything.  The check engine light does not come on.  Thanks

I need to find out where the ignition control module and fuel pump relay are located.  Does anybody know where they are on my engine.  Thanks

The Ignition module is inside the distributor and the fuel pump relay is behind the ashtray by the ecm.

Any luck on the hesitation ? My na is still doing it, how did you test your O2 sensor, followed how to's and my readings are all over, how'd you test TPS ? Again , mine were all over the place, thinking I didn't do it right but...seeing you've been there you'd have a fresh know how. Did replace my TPS with used, no difference. Driving me nuts figuring this thing out ( short drive for me ) ready to part it out but I don't usually give up that easy...usually ! Going to be buttoning it up for winter real soon and would like to have a good start to next season with it , wife too . Thanks !

yeah, we checked TPS with voltage tester, oxygen sensor was checked by running a scan.  We have now singled the issue down to the ECM or computer.  I am currently looking for a new computer but also looking into get my computer repaired.  Sorry to say I still don't have a true answer but mechanic says that is all that is left that it can be.  Will let you know if this fixes my car.  Thanks

Ok, we installed a new Ignition control Module and it fixed it about 90%  it still has a little hesitation, but wow did it make a difference in my pickup.  The only thing left to replace is the ECM/PCM.  Anybody else having this issue, let me know what you have done to fix the issue.  Thanks

Josh here had an issue years ago where the bearings inside his distributor were going out, causing the center shaft to rattle around and throw weird signals to the pickup. It caused a stutter at certain RPMs. He replaced the distributor with a used one and it ran fine.

Also, the turbo 323 guys had issues for a long time where the springs that hold the mechanical timing advance weights in the distributor would snap, the weights would sling out and run on the inside of the case and eventually cut thru the case like a pipe cutter. I've never heard of this issue on any XR2, I have a feeling Mazda knew about it and put better quality springs in our distributors. But our precious little cars are getting older.

I doubt these are common issues but it may be worth investigating

For us it turned out to be a bad mass flow unit.  Had it replaced and seems to work very well now.

Wasn't the cheapest repair on a car that we have had done, but it worked.
