What model transmission is in the 1991 Mercury Capri 5 speed
« on: August 15, 2017, 06:24:08 PM »

Ok. I'm new to writing threads but I have been searching online for a few weeks now trying to find out what transmission is under the hood of the 1991 mercury capri. So far i think its either a Mazda M5 or a G5M. Since I am planing on swaping a v6 into it i want to make sure i get an engine that is compatable with my transmission. Most of my reaserch either says that its a 5 speed and nothing else... i know its a 5 speed already i need more info. or i comes up as a Mazda 4EAT-G 4 speed and i know for sure its not that. so what transmission is it

The transmission in the N/A Capri is a F5M-R and is rated for 100 ft/lbs of torque and uses a hydralic operated clutch.  The XR2 tranny is a G5M-R rated at 200 ft/lbs of torgue and uses a cable operated clutch.

So would  a mazda 2.5l klze be able to bolt onto the F5M-R transmission?

The F transmission is a very weak transmission and not recommended for power upgrades.  I don't have any experience with the K engines, but think the B series engines have a different bolt pattern.  The easier engine it the BP 1.8 from Escorts and Tracers and it's not easy.

Nope the KL stuff doesn't bolt up to the F-Series, it uses a G-Series like the XR-2 but it has a different final drive, and bell housing. Look on ClubProtege.com there's a few swap/build threads for the BF 323(The Car that the Capri shares a unibody with). I would assume you would use whatever transmission you pulled from the 626/Probe, I think axles would be the hardest part you probably would have to fab a set but I'm not sure.

The F-series tranny is weaker then the G-series, but F-series can definitely hold more than 100ft/lbs torque...LOL.  I've already put a 50 shot in my BP before the stock style clutch would even start to slip. Besides, Ford and Mazda did use the F-series on various 1.8L and 1.9L engines too.

I've done a lot of research, planning, and part collecting for my KL build and I think the best way to sum it up is: Any V6 engine you try to swap in will require a matching tranny too.

Here's a thread on this forum that should help too

DamnKID over on the festiva forum put a klz in a festy so it will work in the capri .

Look for his thread on fixing the klz trans to have the correct axles to fit the hubs.
