Larger throttle body
« on: April 25, 2017, 09:43:40 PM »

I did a data base search on throttle bodies and found some info on boring out the existing TB and a reference to going big bore to one off a Thunderbird which is much larger.  I believe our TB is 55MM and the BP use a 60mm.  After porting the intake to match, wouldn't this give you some good improvement on a mildly modified engine?

It's going to depend entirely on your setup. You'd certainly need a de-restricted intake (even a drilled airbox, like I did on the weekend) and a bigger exhaust to get any benefit out of a larger diameter TB, in my opinion. Keen to hear if anyone has done this to a turbo.

AZGTX replied to one of my inquiries about how to open up induction with these answers. It's the stock air box with a bunch of holes.
As for the air cleaner, I don't like the cones or the foam types. After I tore down a motor that used those it really changed my mind. Use the stock air box and use a hole saw to open it up a bit and stay with the oem type panel filters. You can buy a K&N for this and the BF323 application if you prefer.

The holes in the stock air box does wonders - even for the N/A which I have opened up the air box as well.  Much more rev ability - it used to run out of puff quite early - now it can rev higher and feel like it is doing something rather than wheezing out (not as good as the turbo though).

The turbo or N/A in Oz doesn't (well at least both of mine) have the long air intake prior to the air box (as shown in the older post) - that seems to be quite restrictive.

I have found opening up air capacity of the air box does wonders on any car - not any more power per se but allows more response at different rev ranges - my V8 Falcon (5.4litre DOHC) had a definite lag in low end which was resolved with better breathing at the air box - much more responsive - just some extra holes underneath - I imagine this is just as good as the expensive cold air intake systems offered by various.

Lol....after posting the question, it dawned on me what you were talking about.  Glad I did though, great pics.

Thanks, Jack Byrd
