Trouble starting a 91 auto.
« on: February 05, 2017, 07:53:25 PM »

Hi,
My son recently bought a 91 auto and sometimes has trouble starting it. If you hold the key while moving the selector in and out of gear a couple of times it starts in a couple of tries.
Because it's an intermittent fault we're having trouble fixing it!
Does anyone have any idea what it could be?
Thanks in advance.

Sounds like it could be a bad battery or the starters going bad. It sounds more like a bad starter IMO.

I think the battery is ok, it's fairly new but could be a bad connection on the starter motor.

Sounds like the neutral safety switch / gear position switch is bad or out of adjustment. I forget how it is setup on the automatic.

Basically it's an interlock switch, it won't let the car start unless it's in neutral or maybe park only

Bad starter or battery would usually give different symptoms. Failing to start unless you physically tap the starter with a hammer or pipe would point to a bad starter

Oh didn't see it was for a Automatic car.
My car had similar problems before I changed the alternator and battery.

Rocketman, that sounds like it could be the problem.
