The transmission in the XR-2 is the strongest of the two being as it can be made with better internals, and a LSD. It has some bad problems with twisting from high torque that the LSD fixes.

So there is no stronger transmission out there? What is the transmission code?

It has a weak differential, which the LSD fixes. Once you get into higher powers (idk, 300,350+) you still have case flex issues which causes 3rd gear teeth to shear off

Look on Clubprotege. There's folks who use an adapter plate to run a Toyota transmission. The axle combo works on BG cars so you will have to get creative to run it in a BF

can you have the gears sent off to hardener them to make them stronger?

Yes but you're still going to have to contend with all the other issues such as shaft and case flex. Hardening gears will only do so much

Same internally, slightly different bell housing angle and uses hydraulic clutch

I'm thinking we ought to be looking at torque ratings instead of horsepower, but I'm looking at 220 foot pounds at most could I just want something that will last even if you beat on it a little bit.

There are no Capris pushing this kind of power so we don't have folks here reporting their findings firsthand.
The info I have gathered on transmission reliability comes from watching various Mazda forums over the years.

The Bore/Stroke ratio of the Capri is relatively square, with a tad more HP vs Tq, they are roughly even.
Like I said above, the weakest spot of the transmission is the diff, if you correct that then you should be good
There's lots of good info on the Clubprotege forum, I suggest having a poke around there. There were guys going thru extreme measures to get the g-series beefed up with varying levels of success but also $$$$ investment. Billet bearing cup/plate in a modified case, external framework around the case to prevent flex, custom gearsets, etc
