Alternator Belt Issues...
« on: April 11, 2018, 11:03:38 PM »

So I've had a squealing alternator belt for awhile now and she finally let go. I've researched this issue for hours and have come to the conclusion that it's because the alternate pulley is too wide. I found someone on another forum say that the Gates XL9360 belt is a direct fit to our cars. So I went to the parts store and compared it with a Dayco belt I bought. The Gates is wider but it's also a tad longer. Does anyone else have experience with the Gates belt? Ithe would be awsome if this fixes the issue permanently. Maybe I'm overthinking this but my Capri is my everyday driver so I have to fix it right. Ive driven my Capri for about 7 monthes now with the belt starting to squeel about a month ago or so. It's worth noting that the belt that broke did look old and dry rotted with cracks. I seen there is a "no squeal" belt roo sport sells but unfortunately his ebay store is not up right now and I have a hard time justifying paying $45 for a belt! I also seen Capriparts have a belt for $40 and they claim IT is the correct and only belt that will permanently fix the problem...really hoping to get your guys expert advice on this one! please help!

I have a spare no slip belt from Russ, I could give it to you for 20$ + shipping.

I've posted here on the belt issues and the belt that I found that works for me. Wider will probably help but longer is the problem I faced. The stock belt on my XR2 would not reach snug when the belt bolt slot was run all out of slot, so in my experience, longer will not work.

The stock belt is 13/32 wide and 36 1/8 long.

The Gates 9360 is a quarter inch longer (36 3/8) and a sixteenth of an inch wider (15/32 and is used on the Escort GT
The other belt I would recommend is the Gates 9355 from the Miata it's also 15/32 wide, but it's only 35 7/8 long.

The squealing belt issue everyone hears about has nothing to do with an old belt that starts to squeal because it is wearing our or just needs tightening.  The stock setup has no problems with belts, and chances are a decent belt from your parts store with the size they say will work just fine.

Yea the belt they sell doesn't  fit the original pulley design because they switched alternator mid-year I believe. When I got my replacement alternator I got the newer style pulley with it.
