'94 Airbag ,back-up battery
« on: March 04, 2016, 06:38:46 AM »

Can someone let me know the location of the air-bag back-up battery. Also if it was to be temporarily disconnected does it affect the air-bag when reconnected?  (Does the air bag need to reset or similar?)

Air bag backup battery.  The first I'd heard of this one.  Could that be the reason my air bag beeps when the ignition is off?  Very interested in this thread, thanks for bringing it up.

The airbag battery backup module is a blue box located behind the dash near the glove box and it can be easily reached through the glove box opening.

Once you reconnect the airbag backup, the system should resume normal operation upon the next ignition cycle.

Airbag system/battery backup power loss will cause the airbag indicator light to flash 3 times.

Are you getting the 5 sets of 5 beeps? That would be airbag system telling you that the indicator light is out.

Yes on the 5 beeps and the indicator light stays on all time ignition is on, no flashing.  It also beeps when the ignition is off to the point that it will drain the battery if not cranked in a few days.

Thanks, Jack

There is no backup battery, the module uses several large capacitors to hold a charge

A constant indicator lamp means the diagnostic module is either disconnected or defective. From your symptoms, it sounds like your diagnostic module is bad from an internal short and is draining your battery.

That is correct, the backup module is nothing really more then some capacitors, diodes, and resistors.

Is the diagnostic nodule the blue box behind the speedo or is that the backup module?

Thanks, Jack

Yup, the blue box near the speedo is the diagnostic module.

The backup module is on the other side by the glove box.

Is it safe to assume these modules are the same between all years and models?

Yes to the back-up module and no for the diagnostic module.

The 91 and earlier diagnostic module is different than the 92+ ones.
