Drumming noise when driving
« on: February 13, 2016, 06:48:10 PM »

Hi All,

I cant find anything that seems similar to this issue.  My 93 N/A manual just started making a low resonance drumming noise when driving - it sounds like it is coming from the front right wheel (driver side in OZ) and has a slight vibration with it.  It occurs when driving at speed (60km/h for instance) and speeds up when applying the brakes.  It stops when vehicle is stopped.

I know my front struts are on the way out (a bit sloppy) but not sure if a suspension item or is it a CV joint?

I have only heard it with car fully loaded (2 adults and 2 children) - not sure yet if it occurs with just driver in vehicle.

Any thoughts or similar issues from anyone?

Thanks

Paul

Might be a wheel bearing starting to fail.

...drumming? Like a definitive, percussive sound? Do you feel it through the steering wheel? Check your brakes for anything out of place, and if they've gone past the minimum thickness, replace them.

Could be a wheel bearing, or a bad tire / broken belt in the tire

Mmhmm. If you have access to a tire balancer that can force match the tire, that would be helpful.

HI All,

thanks for the info provided - it seems the noise has stopped with the only difference being air pressure in tyres.  I do have a broken strut mount bearing (very clunky at times) and it may be linked to this - I will be replacing struts soon (and mount) so hopefully that may be the issue.

Thanks again.

Its been some time with this one but mystery noise was a worn driveshaft - had it  replaced and no no noise....!!  Remember that one for next time.

My car is having a weird noise. Will definitely check the driveshaft since my wheel bearings are in good condition.
