how to install new shifter bushings
« on: February 06, 2016, 01:29:51 PM »

Hey guys,
i have new shifter bushings coming from roo-sports, and was wondering how to install them. I assume i would get to them from the shifter column in the cab ? am i on the right track ?  Once i get to them (however i do), then what do i do ?
any help would be awesome .

Drive onto some ramps, put a big piece of cardboard box down, slide way under there (the cardboard helps you slide and keeps you cleaner) with a couple of 10 mm (is that right everyone?) wrenches.  Have someone jiggle the shifter and you will see where the slop is, remove the bolts, put in the bushings,  and you are done. not any more complicated than that...

well... i got up under the car, found the shifter rod, no problem. noticed the bushings at the shifter end are not bad (no slop)... got to the tranny end, and found all the slop. Now i have a conundrum... The vertical connecting tube did not have any bushings in it. Easy fix. But.. the connecting knuckle did not have any bushings in it either ! Is there a way to remove the bolt thats in that, or is that a fixed bolt with no way to remove it (as it looks to me). there is a heck of alot of slop at that point.  If i put the new bushings in the vretical tube connector, will i be happy with that ?
thanks fellas

That joint has a shoulder rivet (will only come out one way).  Have to grind off the proper end to get it out.  Replace it with a bolt with a locking nut.  Simple job, but a pain to do.  On mine, the head was on the side that was the hardest to get to.

Not sure what a shoulder rivet is, but shifter was messing up. i looked and the bolt was there but it didn't look to screw into anything. thought maybe it snapped, but it doesn't seem to. Yet it's too short to connect to anything. Hoping I just replace the bolt and problem solved.  Where was the link for new bushings? I think NAPA had them?

Yes NAPA has them.  It uses the same bushing as 323, Festiva, Escort and maybe a dozen other vehicles.
