New Speedhut Gauges / Sending Unit Questions
« on: February 02, 2016, 06:48:22 AM »

Hi guys,

I'm installing new gauges and I'm really confused about the sending unit details.  I hope someone can help me here 'cause I don't quite know what to do and I don't know who else to ask so please help if you can.

I'm using Speedhut gauges   ( speedhut.com  ).   I think this is the type I have:

http://www.speedhut.com/gauge/G-WTR-01/1/Speedhut-Water-Temp-Gauge-120-260F

On page 34 of this pdf file:

http://www.techcapri.com/ServiceManuals/1991/Group%2033%20-%20Instrument%20Clusters%20Control%20and%20Warning%20Systems.pdf

I see a drawing of the location of the temperature gauge sending unit.  The drawing's a little vague for me.  Can anyone shed some light on the sensor that I need to access / replace so I can use my new gauge?  Do I even need to use the Speedhut sending unit or will the Capri sending unit work with the Speedhut gauge?

As far as the oil pressure gauge, I believe this is the one I'm using :

http://www.speedhut.com/gauge/G-OIL-01/1/Speedhut-Oil-Pressure-Gauge-0-100psi

I read in this thread:

http://www.teamcapri.com/forum/index.php/topic,1470.msg10328.html#msg10328

that Gostlrs wrote "  hh, on back on the block near firewall....

nut the ECU should need that signal to work so you can just remove them normally.

i normally get a oil filter adapter or relocation kit

http://shop.edoperformance.com/greddy-oil-relocation-kit-miata-8993-p-3977.html

allows you add sensors to it and keep the factory signals going to the computer

i am sure there are mush cheaper ones out there. that was the first one i seen on google.  :D

you can get just the adapter for about 50 or so"

but that link doesn't work anymore.  Do I have to install an oil filter adapter or relocation kit just so I can use a different sending unit for the oil pressure gauge?

Lastly, I want to install a new turbo boost gauge.  I am COMPLETELY at loss for this one.  I can cut and weld you a frame, do pretty good body and paint but when it comes to engines and electronics, I'm a first class Putz.
Any help anyone can give me would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks very much in advance - and I hope everyone is doing well!

Thanks,
Dave

Is the bottom sensor (circled) the sensor that triggers the engine cooling fan and the top sensor (also circled) the sending unit for the temperature gauge?

If I disconnect the wire to the top sensor, is the computer going to get messed up?

(Slightly better picture) :

Is this the oil pressure sending unit?

If so, how do you remove it?  It appears to me that that large bracket with the two bolts into the block, one bolt holding the starter and at least two bolts up high has to come out?

Yes

No, the ECU uses another temp sensor that has 2 wires(blue/yellow & blue/red) for the engine temp reading.

Yup, that's the oil pressure sender unit.
When I removed mine, I unbolted the starter so I could get a wrench onto the flats behind the oil senders electrical body.

Thank you Sir!    :D :D :

Would you happen to remember where that other engine coolant sensor is?

Thank you again,

Dave

I thought of a new idea --

It's a possibility that the XR 2 sending units will be compatible with the Speedhut gauges.  I called Speedhut and they told me that their water temperature and oil pressure gauges work with sending units that are 240 - 330 ohms.

For water temperature, 240 ohms is 120* and 330 ohms is 260*
For oil pressure, 240 ohms is 0 pounds of pressure and 330 ohms is 100 pounds of pressure.

Any idea what the specs are on the Capri sending units?  I don't want to take the chance of connecting the new gauges to the Capri sending units just to see if they work 'cause that's usually how I blow things up.  :-\

There's a graph in the FSM that shows the temp vs resistance curve for the sensors. You can check that with the figures they gave.
I'd be more inclined to use their sensors personally - probably a newer sensor with a better response, likely more accurate than our old bits.

Don't be afraid to drill & tap to add new sensors in.

The ECU's temp sender is in the bottom of the intake manifold

Thank you Rocket.

Could you please give me a link to the FSM or tell me how to get to it?  I don't know what that is.

I found on Speedhut's website that they have adapters available for their sending units   :

http://www.speedhut.com/shop/c/31:6/Gauge-Fittings/

I'll see if I can wrestle that oil pressure sending unit out and then try to figure out if the threads are metric (I assume?) or NPT.

Thank you again!

The oil pressure sender is a 1/8-28 BSP thread.

Oh boy, I didn't see that coming.  I figured it'd be a metric thread.... I don't think I've ever dealt with a BSP thread before.

Since my sending units are 1/8" NPT, do you think this will be what I need to make my gauge work with the Capri block?

Thank you very much for the info!

Livechat at that website says it's 20 X 1.5mm ?

I'm so confused   :-[

I removed the big ass heavy steel black bracket and saw this behind it.

Which one is the oil pressure sending unit?  What's the other one?

The larger one, on the bottom, doesn't have a wire going to it...

That 1/8 BSP to 1/8 NPT would be the correct adapter.

Livechatís answer of 20 X 1.5 would be the thread's for the oil filter.

The smaller top one is the knock sensor. The larger lower one is the oil sender unit and the wire that goes to that one should be yellow/red.
