92xr2 build, RWD style.
« on: May 10, 2015, 11:12:22 PM »

Starting with an essentially stock xr2, I am aiming at a decently potent BP from a 93 escort gt mated to a 92 miata tranny and driveline, including the rear end. That's the gist. I will be building up the motor towards some semblance of reliable power, hoping to use my existing Rocketchip ecm.
Also Dsm/evo3 turbo on a ramhorn header.
Any suggestions on how to maximize this junkyard build?

Stock harness won't work with the RWD engine setup
Rocketchip ECU needs the B6T distributor, which will not work with a RWD setup (would be in the windshield region)
Miata rearend is a terrible choice, it's giant double a-arm takes up way too much space, and it's narrower than the Capri
Giant tunnel needed to mate the Miata rearend's PPF (powerplant frame) to the rear of the Miata trans (how they keep the Miata chassis from torque flexing)

Way better off with a rear end out of something else. Anything else. DSM, Nissan, Subaru...whatever you can make fit. It will be significantly less cutting than trying to fit the miata gear. Hell, take the Miata diff and make your own tube-frame rear. If you can do a RWD conversion than that part would be trivial.

Also, this is mandatory video material for anyone discussing drivetrain conversions:

(also just plain awesome)

Hmmm... well then, what about using a gtx drivetrain and using axle blanks for the front? I've been following that project as well, the mini. I'm certainly not scared of body and frame modifications. If it's possible, I'll push the motor further forward in the engine bay, and build a shifter to compensate.

What exactly went wrong with your swap, rocketman? Mechanical issues? I don't want to copy your setup, I want this to be a unique project. My original thought was an s10 powertrain, but I found a screamin deal on the miata bits.

The 323 GTX rearend would be perfect, if you can grab just that. They are super rare though. Not sure how well it would work with 100% engine power through it, but it'd be a good start

The Mazda AWD transmissions are made of glass. They're not fun, because you can't abuse them. That's what's wrong with my conversion. The center diffs are one of the weak points. Putting axle plugs in and sending 100% of the power thru it is a sure way to blow it up.

Why not do an AWD setup? It's way, way more viable than RWD. The Capri chassis is not made for RWD (even with reinforcements) it's going to handle like crap. You can go AWD, but pick a decent transmission. Toyota has an AWD version of the e153 that the Mazda guys swap to, with the assist of an adapter plate. I've also seen DSM swaps into the 323 chassis using the whole of the DSM drivetrain

If you've got the Miata, keep the bits in the miata. The chassis is designed from the ground up around the drivetrain, and that's what makes them good.

well f*** it. Maybe I'll just take a blazer chassis and duct tape the body to it.
 Back to the drawing board.

Russ has been talking about a monster Capri for just about ever. Would love to see that happen
